Steven Soderbergh is a fantastically eclectic filmmaker (you never know where he’s going to go next), but if you look back over his roughly 30 dramatic features it’s telling to consider how many of them are some variety of tricky old-school thriller or film noir powered by suspenseful screw-tightening. I’m talking about the “Ocean’s” trilogy, the ebullient Elmore Leonard adaptation “Out of Sight,” the redneck heist thriller “Logan Lucky,” the deconstructed gangster mystery “The Limey,” the brooding noir “The Underneath,” the small-town grunge noir “Bubble,” the sex-industry noir “The Girlfriend Experience,” and the true-life-bumbler noir “The Informant!” Soderbergh has a prankish side, but the truth is he would have been right at home in the ’40s or ’50 churning out moody black-and-white thrillers like Robert Siodmak or Joseph H. Lewis.
His latest, “No Sudden Move,” makes that connection all the more explicit. Opening on a gorgeous vintage version of the Warner Bros. logo,...

Easing back into moviemaking after the months-long covid shutdown seems like a mighty stressful proposition, and from the looks of the cast and crew credits for “No Sudden Move,” Steven Soderbergh decided to alleviate that stress by surrounding himself with people he knew. It’s a picture chock full of reunions: with his frequent star Don Cheadle, with Cheadle’s “Traffic” co-star Benicio del Toro, with Amy Seimetz (of the “Girlfriend Experience” TV adaptation), with Bill Duke of “High Flying Bird”; even Brendan Fraser was previously directed by Soderbergh, on a wonderful episode of the long-forgotten Showtime anthology series “Fallen Angels.” The script is by Ed Solomon, who penned the director’s HBO series “Mosaic”; the music is by his regular collaborator David Holmes; the producer is Casey Silver, who, as head of Universal Pictures, offered Soderbergh the picture that saved his career, “Out of Sight.” (And, of course, he...

The world of “Blindspotting” is headed to the small screen: Starz has greenlit a spinoff series based on the 2018 film, following Jasmine Cephas Jones’ character.
Per Starz, the series will center on Ashley, who was nipping at the heels of a middle-class life in Oakland until Miles, her partner of 12 years and father of their son, is suddenly incarcerated, leaving her to navigate a chaotic and humorous existential crisis when she’s forced to move in with Miles’ mother and half-sister.
The half-hour series will be written and executive produced by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, who starred, wrote, and produced the original film. Casal will serve as the series’ showrunner and will have a recurring role. Jess Wu Calder and Keith Calder will also executive produce the film alongside Emily Gerson Saines, Ken Lee, and Tim Palen. Film journalists, critics, directors, and more are showing support for writer-actress-filmmaker Amy Seimetz on social media after news surfaced she has an open restraining order against “Primer” and “Upstream Color” director Shane Carruth. Seimetz starred opposite Carruth in “Upstream Color” and the two had a relationship that ended in 2018. Seimetz filed for the restraining order against Carruth on June 12, citing years of emotional and physical abuse. One alleged incident that occurred at a hotel in 2016 found Carruth strangling Seimetz until it was hard for her to breathe.
Seimetz’s restraining order gained visibility on social media after Carruth tweeted an image of the “Upstream Color” soundtrack on vinyl with part of the restraining order document sticking out from underneath it. The photo’s timing has led many people in the film community to wonder if Carruth is trying to take attention away from the release of Seimetz’s acclaimed new film “She Dies Tomorrow,...

An hour ago I hadn’t heard of this show and now the remaining weeks between today’s trailer drop and the show’s November premiere seems like an eternity. Steven Soderbergh EPing a new Netflix limited series written-and-directed in its entirety by Scott Frank? This is a no-brainer.
Soderbergh’s television track record is pretty great; he’s involved to varying degrees with projects ranging from “The Knick” to Amazon‘s “Red Oaks” to “The Girlfriend Experience.” Apparently, Frank had wanted Soderbergh to direct “Godless” as a feature film (the two had previously collaborated as screenwriter and director on “Out of Sight“) but Soderbergh refused due to his fear of horses (“I can’t do Westerns, I’m terrified of horses, which is unfortunate.”) Frank had to settle for Soderbergh taking on the role of Executive Producer.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers through “Outlander” Season 3, Episode 5, titled “Freedom & Whisky.”]
Author Diana Gabaldon has become quite the expert on 18th century Scotland thanks to the research she’s done to write the “Outlander” novels on which the hit Starz series of the same name is based. Since the action takes place over decades, in many different lands, and during times of political unrest, her two main characters have had to take on a number of different names.
On Sunday’s episode, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) has finally returned back to Scotland after spending two decades in the 20th century. She had stayed parted from her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan) for so long because she had believed he had died at the Battle of Culloden, but when it’s revealed that he had survived and imprisoned, she begins to wonder if they can reunite. Finally, she finds evidence of a printer named Alexander Malcolm who had printed a phrase that only her Jamie could have known.

If 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce, why do we even try? That’s the question filmmaker Tao Ruspoli set out to explore following a painful divorce, interviewing relatives, advice columnists, psychologists, historians, anthropologists, artists, philosophers, sex workers, sex therapists, and ordinary couples about love, sex & monogamy. Featuring recognizable sex and relationship experts like Dan Savage and Esther Perel, as well as divorce lawyer Diana Adams and “Sex At Dawn” author Christopher Ryan, “Monogamish” taps into the zeitgeist in a very real way. This flashy new trailer is any indication, it might just cause you to question everything.

Easily one of the most anticipated returning dramas this fall TV season is “The Girlfriend Experience.” Starz’s reimagining of Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 indie film of the same name was one of the best series of 2016, and IndieWire even named it the best directed drama series of the 21st century after only 13 episodes. Creators Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan are returning for the more ambitious next run of episodes, with each director tackling one of two parallel storylines.

The Emmys have been getting better in recent years, with winners like Tatiana Maslany and Rami Malek being welcome and deserved surprises, but the Academy’s frustrating history of repeat nominees and winners has made it hard for deserving performances and series to make their mark. No awards show is ever going to be perfect, especially the Emmys when you consider just how many options there are to choose from each year, but it’s never not heartbreaking when you realize the likes of Kristen Bell, Carrie Coon, Michael K. Williams and more all went unnoticed for iconic TV performances.

The idea of a “fall TV season” feels particularly antiquated in 2017, as two of the year’s buzziest series (“Game of Thrones” and “Twin Peaks”) have already wrapped for the year. Fall may even be a bit of an afterthought now compared to spring, as networks aim to catch Emmy voters with prestige TV premieres when campaign season gets underway.
And yet, there’s nearly 70 years of tradition with the fall TV season. It’s when Nielsen still resets the calendar for the new TV year; when blue chip advertisers like the automotive sector roll out their own new wares; football season returns (don’t discount that huge impact on TV schedules); and the weather gets chilly, which conceivably means more viewers watching TV indoors.
This year, they’ll find a lot of familiar titles on broadcast TV, including the return of NBC’s “Will & Grace”; a prequel to “The Big Bang Theory,...

“American Horror Story: Cult” (FX, 10 p.m.). From our review:
It’s not hard to see how Ryan Murphy arrived at his premise for “Ahs” Season 7. To say that many Americans have been living out their own personal horror story isn’t an overstatement — not with border closings, hate speech, and potential treason all enabled by the White House — but the new season manages to undermine the left’s legitimate fears and amplify the right’s monstrous traits all in one frenzied mess of an allegory.

There has always been something rather Hawksian about Steven Soderbergh. Speaking with the French magazine Positif in 1993, Soderbergh actually brought up Howard Hawks, a venerable icon of Hollywood cinema, stating, “The career I would like is John Huston’s or Howard Hawks’s. You know, very varied, many different subjects.” It’s true Soderbergh and Hawks diverge greatly in terms of form—the latter is straightforward, classically composed, no frills; the former is stylish, spontaneous, technically innovative—but their recurring subject matter, with a little stretching, isn’t far removed. Take the focus on working professionals in Traffic (2000), the Ocean’s films (2001, ‘04, ‘07), The Girlfriend Experience (2009), and Magic Mike (2012); though not exactly traditional Hawksian occupations, there is a firm appreciation for a job to do and to be done well. More than that, though, what connects Howard Hawks and Steven Soderbergh is their uniform consistency, not necessarily in terms of year-after-year quantity,...

Steven Soderbergh frequently claims he’s retiring from directing movies, but fortunately these protests never seem to last very long. His current return from the cinematic grave is Logan Lucky, which opens this weekend; our film staff says the movie proves that Soderbergh is as great as ever. He’s had quite an illustrious film career, ever since his debut Sex, Lies & Videotape wowed audiences at Cannes in 1989. His peak (so far) was likely 2001, when he was Oscar-nominated for directing both Traffic and Erin Brockovich (winning for Traffic). There have been various ups and downs along the way, like Magic Mike, Solaris, the Ocean’s trilogy, The Limey, Bubble, The Girlfriend Experience… the list goes on.
On to about 20-some movies, which is why not one but two sites this week (that we know of) took it upon themselves to rank all of Soderbergh’s movies from ...

Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director of Traffic (2000) and films as diverse as Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), Kafka (1991), his two-part biopic Che (2008) and The Girlfriend Experience (2009), returns to features after a four year absence with a cool breeze of summertime sweetness called Logan Lucky. On the surface, this let's-rob-a-racetrack caper looks like a redneck spin on Ocean's 11, his starry (Clooney, Pitt, Damon) 2001 box-office hit. And in some ways it is. "I've lost interest in anything that smells important," the 54-year-old director recently told the New York Times.

Making the transition to an anthology series is risky for any show. Switching gears to a brand-new story could either help illuminate and expand the themes of a series or, if not done right, allow it to crumble under the weight of its ambition. But with the combination of great talent involved and intriguing storylines set in motion, the high-wire act is one that can certainly be pulled off.
And it appears that could very well be the case for “The Girlfriend Experience,” Starz’s adaptation of Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 critically acclaimed film of the same name, which is hitting the reset button for season two.

Steven Soderbergh’s directing career started with “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” a massive breakout that not only launched his career — it changed the industry of independent filmmaking in America. While struggling to find his footing after becoming a household name at age 26, Soderbergh never let himself become frozen by his early success or some preconceived notion of what his career would be. Instead, he dogmatically followed any story that piqued his interest, regardless if it was building the slick “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise or an experimental film he shot in his hometown with friends (“Schizopolis”).
He has been careful to build a career that was commercially viable so as to maximize his ability to be constantly creating and experimenting with films that were sometimes aggressively uncommercial. Along the way, he has fought to be as efficient a filmmaker as possible – constantly trying different approaches and new technology to make and...

“It’s wonderful to be a Campion woman,” Nicole Kidman said during the Television Critics Association press tour panel for “Top of the Lake: China Girl.”
Joining co-stars Elisabeth Moss, Gwendoline Christie, and Alice Englert, Kidman praised the director and co-writer of the new season, and joined her cast-mates in praising women’s growing presence in television.
“I’ve known Jane since I was 14, so I had incredible trust in her,” Kidman said about Campion, who she first worked with in the director’s graduate film. “Since I met her as a teenager, she encountered me with all my insecurities, hopes, and desires, so she really knows me.
