The original title for "The Book of Job" was "My Buddy Roberto", a reference to the Italian neorealist filmmaker Roberto Rossellini. Earlier drafts of the script were more heavily influenced by the films of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini.
The dialogue in the fantastical first meeting between Job and Alice was taken nearly word for word from the 1943 film "For Whom the Bell Tolls" starring Ingrid Bergman. Job spots Alice reading the Hemingway classic in the cafeteria.
The home video of Job's father was shot on an actual Sony Hi8 camcorder that Andrew Oh's family had used during his childhood. The scenes were recorded to cassette tape then later digitized.
"The Whims of Father Bentley" (2018) is a short film prequel, revolving around the eccentric life of Father Bentley.
The entirety of the movie was filmed in Dallas, Texas.
