Writer-Director-Producer Alan Ball wrote the family as living in South Carolina, while he was born and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. The early scene where Daddy Mac (portrayed by Stephen Root) and Mike (portrayed by Steve Zahn) are watching an Atlanta Falcons football game (and yelling at the kids to get out of the way) is a reference to where Ball grew up.
Spiro Agnew resigned on October 10, 1973. Uncle Frank says that " Agnew needs to go." His niece Beth just entered school so the party takes place sometime between September and October of 1973.
Stephen Root was also in Alan Ball's TV series True Blood (2008).
