After announcing the project more than five months ago, NBC has officially greenlit the 12-episode miniseries A.D., which will pick up where History’s well-watched The Bible left off.
Mark Burnett, wife Roma Downey and Richard Bedser will serve as executive producers on the project, which will most likely premiere in spring 2015.
“You might think the story is over at the Crucifixion, but as most of the world knows, that was only the beginning,” NBC Entertainment chief Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “Everyone’s lives were completely altered in an instant and the immediate aftermath of Christ’s...

NBC is looking for a ratings miracle. The broadcaster has greenlit Mark Burnett’s follow-up to the producer’s mini-series sensation The Bible.
NBC has ordered the 12-hour mini-series A.D., and it’s billed as a continuation of Burnett’s previous project, which aired on History Channel earlier this year and delivered massive ratings that drowned nearly all TV rivals — including NBC. A.D. was previously announced as being in development at the network last July.
“Last year when Mark Burnett was launching The Bible on cable, I told him, without hesitation, that if he wanted to tell more of the story,...

NBC has given a formal green light to 12-hour miniseries A.D., Mark Burnett and Roma Downey‘s follow-up to their highly rated miniseries The Bible that aired on History earlier this year. The project, produced by LightWorkers Media with Burnett, Downey and Richard Bedser serving as executive producers, is eyeing a premiere in spring 2015. “Last year when Mark Burnett was launching The Bible on cable, I told him, without hesitation, that if he wanted to tell more of the story, we’d love to do it at NBC,” said NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt. “We are firmly in the ‘event’ business and nothing has more event potential than A.D. as it continues immediately after the The Bible ended.” The order for A.D., which will be written by BAFTA nominee Simon Block (The Shooting Of Thomas Hurndall), comes a week after NBC greenlighted its first miniseries under the network...

Following on from the worldwide success of both Blood and Sand and prequel Gods of the Arena, Spartacus returns to Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD with the highly anticipated sequel Spartacus: Vengeance, later this month.
Australian actor Liam McIntyre (Rush, Neighbours, The Pacific) has stepped into the title role, following the death of actor Andy Whitfield last year, whilst Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) returns as Lucretia to remind viewers that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. This series promises to be even more gory and gratuitous than before – picking up where the first series left off, on the heels of the bloody escape from the House of Batiatus, Vengeance joins the gladiator rebellion as it gains momentum, striking fear into the heart of the Roman Republic.

Effortlessly gorgeous and consistently engrossing, Rowan Joffe’s feature debut is an update of Brighton Rock, an adaptation of the Graham Greene crime novel first filmed in 1947 by the Boulting Brothers and starring a very young Richard Attenborough in what turned out to be a breakthrough role of sorts. The earlier film, which has developed a minor cult for its odd mixture of lurid noir stylings and depiction of pre-war British coastal life, is set in the late ’30s, with Europe’s headlong leap into war providing the backdrop for the tale of the sociopathic young gangster Pinkie Brown and the ill-fated love he has for Rose, a waitress with information that could tie him a revenge killing. Joffe’s film changes the setting to the early ’60s, with the seaside town of its title and the evolving cultural mores of Britain’s rebellious youth filling in the ambience.

"Any remake of a much-loved film provokes outrage, which usually turns out to be justified," writes David Cox in the Guardian. "The Boulting brothers' 1947 version of Graham Greene's Brighton Rock is considered by some the best British film of all time. Martin Scorsese, Terrence Malick and even the Hughes brothers have all considered revisiting this hallowed ground, but then balked at the prospect. Worrying territory, then, for a first-time feature director. Rowan Joffé comes to the task armed with a best director Bafta for TV drama The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall and writing plaudits for Brit flicks 28 Weeks Later and Last Resort. Slim enough credentials you may think. Nonetheless, it is clear from the outset that he is quite ready to blaze his own trail."...

The big-screen adaptation of Graham Green’s novel Brighton Rock is set to open across the UK on February 4.
The film, which will be directed by screenwriter/director Rowan Joffé, is released across cinemas nationwide after receiving the red carpet treatment at September’s Toronto Film Festival.
Joffé - known for his small-screen efforts and screenwriting on 28 Weeks Later – scooped the Best Director award at the 2009 BAFTA TV Awards for Channel 4’s docu-drama The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall.
Produced by Paul Webster (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) for Kudos Pictures in association with BBC Films and the UK Film council, Brighton Rock features a wealth of UK talent including Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Dame Helen Mirren, and John Hurt.
Greene’s novel is relocated to 1964, a time of fierce clashes between mods and rockers and the last year of the death penalty. The story follows anti-hero Pinkie (Riley) and his rise through the criminal underground.

Planning logistics and hiring crew for film productions like The Hurt Locker is hard graft with little in the way of glitter, Donall McCusker tells Jill Insley
Most people have pictures of their children, pets and partners on their iPhone. Not Donall McCusker: his gallery includes soldiers hefting large guns, profile shots of Arabic-looking men and perfectly timed snaps of explosions – the kind of thing that would immediately lead to his detention if spotted by airport security staff.
It might take him some time to convince them of his innocence: he was brought up in Belfast and still has a distinct accent which, combined with the photos, might start alarm bells ringing.
But McCusker has the best reason in the world to be carrying these photos: he was co-producer on the war film The Hurt Locker, which picked up six Academy Awards this year, and his photos are all...
