The Australian drama series The Artful Dodger will return for a second season on Hulu, it was announced today. The second season will be filmed in 2025 at the historic Callan Park in Sydney, Australia.

The eight-episode Season 2 stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Jack Dawkins, aka The Artful Dodger, David Thewlis as Fagin, and Maia Mitchell as Lady Belle Fox. They team up with a full ensemble of Australian and New Zealand cast members and several new faces in cameo roles.

Series co-creator James McNamara (The Outrageous True Story of Milky Moor) is leading the writing team, with Kate Mulvany, Dan Knight (Irreverent), and Miranda Tapsell also on board.

Ben Young and Gracie Otto serve as directors with Jeffrey Walker consulting.

The Artful Dodger Season 2 will pick up where the heart’s desires of Dodger, Fagin, and Lady Belle left off, promising more cunning thievery, snappy humor, life-and-death surgeries, and romance with a twist.

Here’s the thing. Will Sharpe has taste. Olivia Colman’s indie South of the River Pictures has hired Emmy-winning producer Lucy Barzun Donnelly.

Donnelly will oversee film development and production activities, with a focus on nurturing new and established creators from diverse backgrounds on and off screen. In addition to the new hire, Lina Stroud is promoted to Director of Development, Film & TV. She has been with the Sister-backed company since its inception.

Donnelly began her career at John Lyons’ production company, Kalkaska, where she co-produced the Oscar-nominated drama Pieces of April and worked across the likes of Austin Powers: Goldmember. Searchlight Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair’s South of the River Pictures. Under the new pact, the specialty studio, which has worked with Colman on “The Favourite” and “Empire of Light,” will develop and produce feature-length motion pictures with the production company.

Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct the indie from a script they adapted based on a short story, The Wicker Husband, by Ursula Wills-Jones. Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce Wicker, with the cameras set to start rolling next year.

Former Netflix content executive Cindy Holland has joined Elizabeth Murdoch’s production company Sister as its new global chief executive officer, tasked with overseeing the business’ strategic direction and portfolio of companies in the U.S. and U.K.

Holland served at the streaming giant for 18 years, including nine years as its vice president of original content. In that role, she established Netflix’s original programming strategy and oversaw teams behind titles including “House of Cards,” “Orange is the New Black,” “BoJack Horseman,” “Grace and Frankie,” “Narcos,” “Making a Murderer,” “Stranger Things,” “The Crown,” “Icarus,” “Ozark,” “Big Mouth,” “Russian Doll,” “When They See Us,” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” among many others.

Most recently, Holland has been an active investor and advisor, with a focus on entertainment and women’s sports. She began her career on the producing side working at Spring Creek Productions with Paula Weinstein and at Mutual Film Company.

With HBO Max turning into Max, Warner Bros. Discovery is introducing a higher-priced plan — $19.99 per month — with an expanded bouquet of 4K Ultra HD content aimed at pushing customers to the pricier package.

As announced by the studio, Sharpe will take on the coming-of-age story about a half-Korean daughter who returns to small-town Oregon to care for her Korean mother. The project, which was first announced back in 2021 with Zauner herself writing the screenplay, is set at MGM’s Orion Pictures and is now moving forward under Amazon’s supervision. Amazon finalized its acquisition of MGM for $8.5 billion last spring, and the studio has been ramping back up with its recent hire of new film chief Courtenay Valenti.

Zauner will pen the script adapting her book that tracks her years growing up as one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Oregon and the months spent at her grandmother’s apartment in Seoul, as well as her career in the East Coast indie music scene and meeting her husband. Chlöe Bailey, Tosin Cole, Olivia Colman and Woody Harrelson are set to star in Girl From the North Country, adapted from the Tony Award-winning Broadway show of the same name inspired by the songs of Bob Dylan.

The movie adaptation is written and directed by Conor McPherson, the playwright behind the original Broadway musical.

Graham Broadbent and Pete Czerninare produce under the banner of their award-winning Blueprint Pictures.

Traditionally, January and February are the dumping ground for major Hollywood studios. With awards season in full swing and audiences playing catchup on the biggest titles of the prior year, the first two months are usually the perfect place for dropping projects that don't inspire much confidence. But the rise of streaming is slowly changing that trend. Less concerned about the box office and much more obsessed with keeping their release schedules consistent, streamers like Netflix make sure to always have exciting new titles lined up, dump months be damned. Belfast, No Time To Die and House Of Gucci are among the titles nominated for the fifth annual UK and Ireland’s Casting Directors’ Guild’s (CDG) Casting Awards 2023.

The three titles are all nominated for best casting in a film, along with Spencer and The Lost Daughter.

The winners will be announced at the CDG Awards on February 22.

Disney+ has announced the cast of the Disney+ Australian original series ‘The Artful Dodger,’ which includes Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Brodie-Sangster, David Thewlis (“Landscapers,” “Fargo”) and Maia Mitchell lead the stellar cast, with Brodie-Sangster taking on the role of “Jack Dawkins” aka “The Artful Dodger,” Thewlis as “Fagin” and Mitchell as “Lady Belle Fox.”

The series is a character drama set in 1850s Australia and is a much-loved story with a twist. Across eight episodes the scripted series explores the adult double life of Charles Dickens’ famous prince of thieves – Dodger – now a surgeon, but who can’t shake his predilection for crime. Think you know Ethan? Think again.

On Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” Will Sharpe plays the reserved, if not slightly awkward, tech guy who recently came into wealth and embarks on a couples getaway that turns out to be more than he bargained for.

Paired with Aubrey Plaza’s pugnacious Harper, Theo James’ haughty Cameron and Meghann Fahy’s cheery Daphne, Ethan is a bit of a straight man. But Sharpe says that’s all about to change, and audiences shouldn’t be so quick to root for him.

“Some of the characters present with immediacy, and you have a relatively full sense of them early on. But Ethan is supposed to be hard to pin down, so they leave space for you to guess,” he says as a warning.

The 2022 EnergaCamerimage 30th International Film Festival concluded today in Toruń, Poland, with “Tár,” the first film in 16 years from Academy Award-nominated writer-director Todd Field, taking the Golden Frog, the festival’s highest honor, with kudos going to first-time winner Florian Hoffmeister, who shot the picture.

The awards further elevate the status of a number of Oscar-contender hopefuls in the coming months, as previous winners for the Golden Frog include Robbie Ryan for Mike Mills’ “C’mon C’mon” in 2021, Joshua James Richards for Chloe Zhao’s Best Picture winner “Nomadland” in 2020, and Lawrence Sher for Todd Phillips’ “Joker” in 2019.

Personal tales of hubris, ego and living large dominated the Camerimage International Film Festival, with the Florian Hoffmeister-shot drama “Tár,” directed by Todd Field, taking the top prize at the leading annual cinematography event.

The jury honored the elaborately constructed story of a brilliant, obsessive composer and conductor, played with gusto by Cate Blanchett, with its Golden Frog prize at the closing gala Saturday night in Torun, Poland.

The Silver Frog and Fipresci prize went to cinematographer Darius Khondji’s opulent, whimsical work in “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,” the surreal story of a Mexican journalist and filmmaker’s reckoning with his past, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

Cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay’s sweeping, nostalgic imagery in “Living,” the Bill Nighy-starring story of a civil servant’s deep personal awakening, directed by Oliver Hermanus, won the Camerimage Bronze Frog.

The Florian Hoffmeister lensed thriller Tár from director Todd Field topped the Camerimage main competition, collecting the Golden Frog during the closing ceremony of the cinematography film festival Saturday.

The Focus Features pic follows the fictional orchestra conductor Lydia Tár, considered one of the greatest at her craft and the first female chief conductor of a major German orchestra, as her life starts to unravel after she is embroiled in a swirl of #MeToo scandals.

The Golden Frog win gives cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister a new boost in the 2023 Oscars race, with three out of the last five Golden Frog winners going on to earn Oscar nominations in cinematography. Those titles include Lion (2016), Joker (2019), and Nomadland (2020).

Mick Jagger, P.J. Harvey and “Heartstopper” casting director Daniel Edwards are among the nominees at this year’s Royal Television Society (Rts) Craft & Design Awards 2022.

Jagger was nominated alongside Daniel Pemberton for writing the opening music to “Slow Horses,” the Apple TV+ show which stars Gary Oldman, while Harvey was nominated in the same category alongside Tim Phillips for their work on Sharon Horgan’s “Bad Sisters.”

“Heartstopper” casting director Daniel Edwards was nominated for his work on the hit Netflix show.

The BBC garnered most noms with 35 nods, followed by Sky with 13 and ITV with 11 nominations.

The awards will take place in London.

Prime Video is expanding the cast for the first season of My Lady Jane, its historical comedy series about Brit monarch Jane Grey, starring Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel and Jordan Peters. Will Sharpe is the secret ingredient. The actor-writer-director is to television what a spoonful of instant coffee is to a tasty bolognese. With his eccentric masterpiece Flowers, the “sitcom with a mental illness” that ran on Channel 4 from 2016 to 2018, he quietly wrote Oscar winner Olivia Colman one of her most brilliant – if least known – parts. In 2019, his witty, razor-tongued performance as a self-sabotaging rent boy in BBC Two’s London-Tokyo thriller Giri/Haji had fans calling for him to get his own spin-off, and won him a Bafta.

Sharpe’s writing and directing on 2021’s Landscapers – a show about a real-life killer couple, which aired on Sky Atlantic – elevated the miniseries from what, in the wrong hands, might have been sensationalist true crime, to romantic psychodrama. And in his latest project, season two of the delicious black comedy The White Lotus, Sharpe is the unsettlingly still centrepiece of a friends’ holiday from hell.

British pay-tv network Sky expects to continue its relationship with HBO “one way or the other,” as Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ in Europe next year gather pace.

Sky has had HBO content output deals in place since 2014, but its ability to re-up in 2025 has been the subject of much speculation as HBO Max rolled out. The pair also entered into a co-production pact in 2019 and have made shows such as the critical hit Chernobyl and comedy Landscapers.

Warner Bros. Discovery has stopped the Max roll out ahead of plans to create a merged product and has not yet addressed its deal with the UK giant. One option could be to pull back from the deal and put its HBO shows on the platform. Deadline revealed yesterday the streamer is letting go of 29 people in Europe.

A24 has tapped Brandy Norwood, Andrew Burnap and Kathryn Hunter to star in the “The Front Room,” with Neal Huff also joining the cast.

The Eggers Brothers – consisting of director Robert Eggers’ twin younger brothers Max and Sam – will make their directorial debut with the psychological horror film. They will also write the screenplay.

Adapted from Susan Hill’s short story of the same name, “The Front Room” revolves around a young, newly pregnant couple who is forced to take in a sickly stepmother who has long been estranged from the family.

The film is a supernatural, time-travelling, musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ beloved Christmas story. With his very soul on the line, Scrooge has but one Christmas Eve left to face his past and build a better future. Evans voices Scrooge, Colman voices the Ghost of Christmas Past, Buckley Isabel Fezziwig, Johnny Flynn Bob Cratchit, Fra Fee Harry Huffam), Giles Terera Tom Jenkins, Trevor Dion Nicholas the Ghost of Christmas Present, James Cosmo Mr. Fezziwig, and Jonathan Pryce voices Jacob Marley.
