It was meant to be a harmless stag night, but a few hours later Michael Neward has disappeared and four of his friends are dead. With only three days to the wedding, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, haunted by the memories of his missing wife, is contacted by Michael's beautiful, distraught fiancée, Ashley Haynes. Grace discovers that the one man who ought to know Michael Neward's whereabouts is saying nothing, but then he has a lot more to gain than anyone realises - for one man's disaster is another man's fortune.

Grace senses a connection between a single death and the discovery of human remains in a field. But his superior is not convinced.
