The original 'walk in the woods' took place in 1997-98, and the book was published on 4 May 1998. However, the film appears to take place in 2014/15, with Bryson using Google Image Search (not introduced until 2001), a Greyhound bus advertising on-board Wi-Fi, the restaurant founded 1931 being family-run for 83 years, and Mary Ellen singing "Get Lucky" (a song released in 2013). However, Katz's postcards are dated 2005.
