Elvis has a lot of buzz this awards season, but Baz Luhrmann didn’t get the story right. The real Elvis Presley traded places with an impersonator in order to live a simple life as an impersonator himself before retiring to Mud Creek, Texas alongside John F. Kennedy, who was patched up and dyed Black after the assassination attempt.

"Sweet Tooth" is that rarest of things: a family-friendly, post-apocalyptic, survival fantasy. It's been a year since the Netflix series debuted to rave reviews, and now the streamer has released a new featurette, confirming that "Sweet Tooth" season 2 has wrapped and giving a behind-the-scenes look at its production.
Developed by Jim Mickle and executive produced by Susan Downey and Robert Downey Jr. among others, "Sweet Tooth" is an adaptation of the DC Comic by Jeff Lemire. Downey once went on record with the slightly less family-friendly comment, "You know what? F*** DC Comics." This was back in 2008, the year of the first "Iron Man" movie and Christopher...

“Sweet Tooth” co-creator and Showrunner Jim Mickle is set to direct the film adaptation of Donny Cates’ acclaimed graphic novel “God Country” for Legendary and AfterShock Media. Cates also adapted the screenplay.
Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer from AfterShock Media will produce along with Mickle and Linda Moran.
“God Country” was originally published in 2017 by Image Comics to critical acclaim. The first issue immediately sold out and had to be reprinted four times before being collected in trade paperback. “God Country” centers on Emmett Quinlan who is an elderly widower rattled by dementia. Emmett isn’t just a problem for his children – his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home – as well as the surrounding West Texas town – a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. Exclusive: We have learned that Jim Mickle, co-creator of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, is partnering with Legendary and AfterShock Media to helm the film adaptation of Donny Cates’ acclaimed graphic novel God Country.
In God Country, Emmett Quinlan is an elderly widower rattled by dementia. Emmett isn’t just a problem for his children–his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home–as well as the surrounding West Texas town–a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. An enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him not just a sound mind and body, but phenomenal power. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State in a film that will bring a Western aesthetic to the super hero genre.
Cates adapted the screenplay from the Image Comics 2017 graphic novel.

Netflix has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Sweet Tooth,” an upcoming fantasy series based on the DC Comics series of the same name. Originally published in 2009, the comic “Sweet Tooth” was written and drawn by Jeff Lemire for DC’s mature-facing imprint Vertigo, which published adult series like “The Sandman,” “Preacher,” and “Watchmen.”
The series was created by filmmaker Jim Mickle, co-creator of SundanceTV’s “Hap and Leonard,” and director of hit genre films such as “Cold in July” and “We Are What We Are.” Mickle serves as executive producer alongside Amanda Burrell, Susan Downey, and Robert Downey Jr.
The fantasy series takes place in a world where an apocalyptic event known as “The Great Crumble” leads to a hybrid breed of babies being born with animal characteristics. After living in isolation for 10 years, a hybrid deer-boy (Christian Convery) forms an unlikely friendship with a wandering loner (“Game of Thrones...

We're in what I might dare to call a new renaissence of crime thrillers, ones that take their time not only to look at crime, but the various sociopolitical factors that surround it (for me at least that's a good thing). The Fargo tv series, Cold in July, Hap & Leonard, all showcase stories that are far more in-depth and cover more engaging terrain than the genre has in the past. A Fire in the Cold Season is a Canadian entry to the pantheon, and a worthy one. Justin Oakey's sophomore feature is a story that reflects on the real limits and consequences of criminal behaviour in a place just about forgotten by everyone. In the far reaches of Newfoundland, where few people live and...

Anyone expecting to see, let alone hear about, a “pale door” in Austin-based filmmaker Aaron B. Koontz’s (Camera Obscura) horror-western, The Pale Door, will be sorely disappointed. Co-writer and director Koontz lifted the title for his film from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “The Haunted Palace.” And with respected horror-western writer Joe R. Lansdale executive producing and Lansdale’s son, Keith, on co-scriptwriting duties, it’s not unreasonable to expect we’re about to see and hear something a cut about the usual, straight-to-streaming or straight-to-vod fare. Unfortunately, The Pale Door doesn’t rise to even the most minimal of expectations. Whether hamstrung by a limited budget, a lack of imagination or creativity, or both, The Pale Door fails to deliver anything...

Like a bag of candy that looks good, tastes great, and somehow also improves your mental health, Joe R. Lansdale writes words good. He spins tales that captivate and surprise, whatever their length and form, so it's no wonder that his works served as the source material for great genre screen adaptations, from Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) to Coscarell's Incident On and Off a Mountain Road (2005) to Jim Mickle's Cold in July (2014) to the wonderful series Hap and Leonard. A stack of his books sits proudly in my closet. If you have not yet made your acquaintance with...

“Hallowed be thy name, oh Lord, and shotgun do your stuff,” wrote Joe R. Lansdale in one of his more than 50 novels, 400 short stories, and countless comic books and screenplays. But while a prolific storyteller, Lansdale is no ordinary writer. He’s the kind of guy who when tasked with writing a sequel to The Drive-In, he subtitled it Not Just One of Them Sequels. He knew you couldn’t skin a rabbit and keep it as a pet. The Texas native also inspired a generation of suspense writers, and the immersive and obsessive documentary on the author, All Hail the Popcorn King, has been touring the country and will be released wider over the coming months.
By the same token, Hansi Oppenheimer is not just any documentary filmmaker. She put the grr in fangrrl. Her upcoming All Hail the Popcorn King promises to be a “five-star” documentary on the award-winning author and screenwriter.

After getting a pilot production order at Hulu in late 2018, the adaptation of DC Vertigo comic “Sweet Tooth” is no longer moving forward at the Disney-owned streaming platform. But Netflix has picked up the one-hour drama from Team Downey, the production company founded by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Starring Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar and Will Forte, “Sweet Tooth” is a coming-of-age tale of Gus, a part boy, part deer who leaves home amid a cataclysmic world event, then joins “a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.” James Brolin has been cast as the voice of the narrator.
Netflix describes the series as a “broad appeal, family-friendly, storybook adventure.” The series is based on characters created for DC by Jeff Lemire.

In an aim to help now-shuttered independent theaters, IFC Films will allow cinemas to screen 200 of its library titles for free once they open back up. The distributor hopes that favorites like “Frances Ha,” “Y Tu Mamá También,” and even “The Human Centipede” will help drive audiences back to theaters in the coming months, a time when fewer and fewer new releases are being scheduled.
The Indie Theater Revival Project‘s offerings will be available to theaters beginning May 29, with traditional rental fees for library titles waived for theaters in the first 30 days that they’re open, starting from whatever date they reopen their doors. That means more money in the pockets in the form of ticket sales for local theater owners who have been faced with a near-zero revenue stream after closing their doors last month.

Director Jim Mickle is no stranger to genre filmmaking. He’s made films about cannibals, vampires, and psychopaths, and won plenty of fans along the way with We Are What We Are, Stake Land, and Cold in July. In his latest, the upcoming Netflix title, In the Shadow of the Moon, he explores the concept of obsession in a multi-generational familial drama. It’s also a murder mystery detective story that has an element of time-travel. So, yes, it’s ambitious to say the least, and it’s also Mickle’s largest production to date.
The film stars Boyd Holbrook, Cleopatra Coleman and Michael C. Hall who all play a part in this massive storyline. While at Fantastic Fest, we sat with Mickle to talk about the film’s moving parts, how he loves getting his actors dirty, and staging large-scale action. We also spoke with the film’s stars...

This looks like one of these high concept serial killer thrillers that has a supernatural twist. What's up with the girl in the pod? A vampire? So weird. After eight scintillating seasons as TV’s most compelling serial killer on “Dexter,” Michael C. Hall is playing for the other team. Looking like a grown-up version of Jonathan Groff’s Holden in “Mindhunter,” Hall plays a detective hunting an elusive serial killer in a new thriller debuting on Netflix later this month. Directed by Sundance award-winning director Jim Mickle, “In the Shadow of the Moon” sets out to catch a repeat killer leaving a string of dead bodies with mysterious bite marks on their necks. The recently released trailer promises an intriguing dose of supernatural elements to keep the viewer on their toes.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In 1988, Philadelphia police officer Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook), hungry to become a detective, begins tracking a serial killer who mysteriously resurfaces every nine years. But when the killer’s crimes begin to defy all scientific explanation, Lock’s obsession with finding...

To celebrate the home entertainment release of Bushwick, available on DVD and Blu-ray 23rd October, we have a copy of the film on DVD up for grabs, courtesy of Kaleidoscope Entertainment!
It’s Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista versus an entire Texas battalion in New York City in this all-out action thriller from the makers of Cooties and Stake Land.
Action movie stars don’t come much bigger than Dave Bautista, Drax from the smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy series, and the villainous Hinx from the latest James Bond film Spectre. Here, front and centre as Stupe, a take no prisoners ex-Marine on the warpath against a Texas militia invading New York, Bushwick establishes Bautista – soon to be seen in Blade Runner 2049 – as an action hero on a par with Vin Diesel and The Rock. Brittany Snow, from the Pitch Perfect movies, excels as Lucy, who,...

Sam Shepard was a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright whose contributions to the theater world spanned decades; by the time he started acting in movies, his career had already taken off. As such, even as he landed an Oscar nomination for “The Right Stuff” and continued to be a regular presence in front of the camera, the multi-talented writer-performer remained primarily associated with the stage. Nevertheless, Shepard remained a major figure in American cinema for 40 years in more ways that one: It’s his tender screenplay that makes Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas” such an emotional powerhouse, and he even directed two features, but it’s Shepard’s acting credits speak to his astonishing range — and the way he continued to evolve his skills as the decades wore on. Here are five standouts from a career so rich with talent that we can only begin to explore it with this limited sampling (sorry,...

Every once in a while, a really special film comes along that you may have a chance to see at a film festival, but that may not have the biggest studio push behind it when it finally gets released. Jeff Grace’s Folk Hero and Funny Guy is one of those great festival movies that really deserves more attention.
The film stars Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), and Alex Karpovsky (Girls) as two childhood friends whose lives went into very different directions in terms of fame and success. Russell’s Jason Black is a hugely-popular singer and songwriter i.e. the folk her of the title, while Karpovsky’s Paul is the funny guy, a struggling stand-up comic for many years. When Paul’s fiancé dumps him, Jason, feeling bad for his friend, throws out the idea of the two of them going on tour with Paul opening for him. The...

In his sixth year at the helm of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, former Liberation film critic Edouard Waintrop has seen his sidebar expand impressively on two fronts.
On one hand, the Quinzaine des Realisateurs (as it’s called in French) has grown under Waintrop's reign into a launching pad for emerging talents in the world of genre filmmaking, with directors like Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room), Jim Mickle (We Are What We Are, Cold In July) and Ben Wheatley (Sightseers) premiering some of their earliest work there before moving on to bigger projects.

A couple years have passed since Jim Mickle impressed with ’80s styled thriller “Cold In July,” and while he’s currently enjoying small screen success with “Hap & Leonard,” his return to the big screen with “Godforsaken” was very highly anticipated. None other than Sylvester Stallone himself talked up the project at CinemaCon this past spring, but it seems somewhere along the way, the actor got some cold feet.

Very rarely do I find myself caught up in the hype that surrounds a movie before I actually see the thing. It’s almost impossible for any movie to live up to the expectations that can be cooked up in the human brain. Unfortunately for me, that was the case with Green Room. In all fairness, it’s a new movie by one of my favorite up-and-coming directors, and features several actors who I have a ton of respect for. Director Jeremy Saulnier had a very impressive — albeit criminally underseen — debut Halloween-themed horror comedy called Murder Party.
