Courtney Love performed an acoustic rendition of Britney Spears’ 2000 hit “Lucky” as part of the singer’s ongoing covers series Saturday.
Love’s cover came just hours after the publication of the New Yorker’s investigation into the Spears conservatorship as well as the events leading up to the controversial arrangement; for the article, Love spoke to writers Ronan Farrow and Jia Tolentino about her controversial former manager Sam Lutfi — a “street hustler,” Love told the New Yorker — who also played a similar role for Spears in 2007.

It’s down to the final four on season 13 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” but before the grand finalists can be decided RuPaul Charles tests the queens one last time. Rosé, Gottmik, Kandy Muse, and Symone couldn’t be any different from one another, but each has notched at least one maxi challenge win this season and all of them have earned their fair share of praise from the judges. So, will the decision of who makes it to “The Grand Finale” just come down to luck?
Below, check out our minute-by-minute “RuPaul’s Drag Race” recap of episode 14 to watch the finale four write and perform their own remix of Ru’s new song “Lucky.” After following along with our live updating blog, be sure to sound off in the comments section with your reactions to VH1’s reality TV show and then resume discussing who you think will ultimately join...

This has already felt like the longest season in RuPaul’s Drag Race herstory, and Friday’s episode did nothing to change that.
Fresh off the elimination of Olivia Lux, the four remaining queens — Gottmik, Kandy Muse, Rosé and Symone — assembled in the werkroom to brace for their final challenge, immediately theorizing about the surprises still remaining up Ru’s sleeve.

In watching “Them: Covenant,” the new anthology series from Amazon Prime Video, I couldn’t help but be reminded of what the gifted young actress Marsai Martin recently said during an interview about her goals as a producer.
“I don’t do no Black pain,” the “Black-ish” actress said. “If it’s Black pain I don’t go for it because there’s so many films and projects about that.”
While pain and trauma are assuredly part of the Black experience, there’s only so much a viewer can take of “Them” before it becomes numbing — and despite the noble intentions of the creators, sensationalistic. Episode after episode of this unfortunate Black family suffering terrors both real and supernatural began to wear the viewer down, especially when the white aggressors receive little comeuppance for their deeds from those being oppressed.
As mentioned in our review of the first two episodes that premiered at SXSW,...

Here’s some free advice for producers and financiers working in the movie business: hire Izzy Lee to make your horror movie. A fierce and fiercely independent filmmaker and author with a whole bunch of wild and wildly different short films to her credit, Lee has been poised to make the leap into features for some time now. I, for one, can’t wait for the day that happens.
If you know Izzy Lee or are familiar with her work, you know she’s outspoken and doesn't take any shit. Those are qualities that definitely carry over into her films. Her shorts "Rites of Vengeance," "For a Good Time Call..." and "Innsmouth" (a reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” with an all-woman cast) deal with sexual politics in one form or another, each one critical of whatever status quo on which it is commenting. Her films tend to be socially conscious,...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

I’ll admit, I went into “Promising Young Woman” in the utterly blind way that trauma victims probably shouldn’t go into anything.
My decision to rent it was inevitable after reading rave reviews on social media from a wide cross-section of colleagues, young and older, which is perhaps why I also made the mistake of watching it with my mother. The lip-sticked, candy-colored promotions allured and deceived me exactly as director Emerald Fennell intended (just as the film’s protagonist lures unconscionable culprits). I’d imagined we were in for a rom-com.
We collectively cringed in the opening scene, when Seth Cohen — rather, Jerry (Adam Brody — how brilliant was the casting of archetypal “nice guys” in these predatory roles?) escorted a seemingly blitzed Cassie (Carey Mulligan) out of the club.
We both held our breath, even as he redirected the cab to his place. I refused to meet my mother’s eyes.

Horror has always been a genre that reflects its times. In the wake of #MeToo and an increased focus on the experiences and the prominence of women, both in the film industry and more generally, we have seen female writers and directors seek to fold those themes into genre cinema. Perhaps the most notable examples being the recent remakes of Black Christmas (directed by Sophia Takal) and The Craft (directed by Zoe Lister-Jones). With Lucky, writer/star Brea Grant and director Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) aren’t reinterpreting one specific text through that lens, rather they’re filtering a whole subgenre: the slasher.
