Many of the prison yard scenes and exterior shots were filmed at the historic Kingston Penitentiary, located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Co-creator Hugh Dillon is from Kingston, Ontario, which is known for having multiple jails in and around the city.
Season 2 is filmed mostly around Pittsburgh, PA. Braddock, Clairton, West Mifflin, Elizabeth, West Elizabeth, and Jefferson Hills. Most of the aerial shots of the industrial complexes are the Mon Valley Works of U.S. Steel. Featured are the Clairton Works in Clairton, Edgar Thomson Works in Braddock and the Irvin Works in West Mifflin. "Tent City" is filmed at the old Carrie Furnace site in Homestead.
The diner in S1E1 has also been used in several other productions including Boondock Saints & Rookie Blue.
On New Year's Day 2023, leading man Jeremy Renner was run over by a snowplow in Nevada in a near-fatal accident resulting in 38 broken bones that left him unable to work for over a year. After a year of rehabilitation, which included extensive healing and learning to walk unassisted again, he returned to acting in January (2024) to film the third season of this popular series.
