‘House Of David’ Renewed For Season 2 By Prime Video
Image
Just three weeks after its Season 1 premiere, Prime Video has ordered a second season of biblical drama House of David.

The series, which launched with three episodes on February 27, drew 22 million viewers in the first 17 days and is among its Top 10 new series debuts in the U.S. to date, according to the streamer. New episodes will be released weekly, leading up to the season finale on April 3.

House of David, which hails from Wonder Project’s Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn (Ordinary Angels), tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, played by Michael Iskander, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel.

The series, based on an idea from Erwin, follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely outcast teenager as the new king.

"It's De Rigeur": 'House of David's Stephen Lang On Why He Had To Do a Biblical Epic [Exclusive]
Image
Stephen Lang has played his fair share of commanding figures, from ruthless military leaders to hardened warriors, but in House of David, the Avatar star takes on a different kind of authority, one whose power comes from on high. Way on high. Lang plays Samuel, the last judge of Israel, in the upcoming biblical epic, a role that he describes as both pivotal to the story and deeply complex. Speaking with Collider, Lang revealed what drew him to the role and how he worked with creators Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn (Ordinary Angels), to figure out Samuel’s place in the series.

‘The Unbreakable Boy’ Review: Zachary Levi Is the Troubled Dad in an Autism Drama Too Feel-Good for Its Own Good
Image
How sunny and well-meaning and therapeutically feel-good is the new autism drama “The Unbreakable Boy?” It’s a movie in which the dad, played by Zachary Levi, has an imaginary best friend. It’s a movie in which the local church is run by a Matthew McConaughey sort of dude named Preacher Rick (Peter Facinelli), who’s so down with his downtrodden flock that he himself is a recovering alcoholic who admits he sometimes doesn’t like to go to church. And it’s a movie in which the title character, an owlish 13-year-old named Austin (Jacob Laval), isn’t merely autistic. He also suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta, which means that his bones are extraordinarily fragile, so that he’s like some teen-geek version of Mr. Glass in “Unbreakable.” Speaking to the audience in voiceover, Austin lists his bone breaks, which number in the high twenties, as if they were Pokémon cards he was collecting.

The Best Dennis Quaid Movies, Ranked
Image
Since the 1980s, Dennis Quaid has been one of Hollywood's most talented stars, leading everything from science fiction to thriller movies. The actor is at his best in more lighthearted and relatable roles, which have endeared him to generations of moviegoers as a great, average Joe-style performer. That has been reflected through his many roles, leading some of the best blockbusters and best-written films of the last forty years.

Quaid's career includes a variety of movies from different genres, but the actor is best known for his common sense, wholesome and relatable all-American characters. Quaid's endlessly optimistic persona shines through in virtually every movie in which he stars, making him especially suited to family movies. From epic disaster blockbusters to heartfelt dramas, Quaid continues to be one of the most compelling stars of his generation.

The Unbreakable Boy Review: Zachary Levi leads a drama about the challenges of parenting a special needs child
Image
Plot: When his parents, Scott and Teresa, learn that Austin is both autistic and has brittle bone disease, they initially worry for their son’s future. But with Scott’s growing faith and Austin’s incredible spirit, they become “unbreakable,” finding joy, gratitude, and courage even in the most trying times — an extraordinary true story about a father and son learning together that every day can be the best day of your life!

Review: Faith-based films often get a bad rap. Many films heavily focused on Christian themes get labeled and struggle to garner mainstream attention. Still, they can sometimes tell beautiful stories that are inclusive rather than damning of other religions. Like last year’s Ordinary Angels, also directed by Jon Gunn, The Unbreakable Boy tells an emotional and challenging true story of a young boy whose challenges are an inspiration to those around them. Rather than sugarcoat the story,...

Prime Video's 'House of David' Trailer Teases 'Game of Thrones' Action for Beloved Bible Story
Image
The tale of David vs. Goliath is one of the most popular and inspiring stories in anthropological history (originating in the Christian Bible), but you've never seen it told like this. The ultimate underdog story should need little introduction, as David, a small shepherd from the Valley of Elah, Israel, took down the mighty, bronze-armor adorned giant, using nothing but a slingshot — spoiler alert. The story has been told, and re-told countless times. But, a new Prime Video series is adding a flare of drama, and appears to be heavily inspired by HBO's Game of Thrones.

House of David has transformed the biblical story into an eight-episode series. The series was created by Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution & American Underdog) and Jon Gunn (Ordinary Angels), based on an idea by Erwin and The Chosen creator, Dallas Jenkins. Up-and-coming actor, Michael Iskander, best known for starring in the award-winning stage musical, Kimberly Akimbo,...

The Bible Goes 'Game of Thrones' in Epic First 'House of David' Trailer
Image
Prime Video has just dropped the first trailer for their upcoming biblical drama series, House of David, which looks slightly more Game of Thrones than it does The Chosen. That's pretty cool. Dennis Quaid Knows Why His Marriage With Meg Ryan Fell Apart: ‘I tried to tell myself that didn’t bother me’
Image
Every now and then we come across stories of actors, their relationships, and the amount of turmoil or struggle they’ve had to deal with. “Zachary Levi fell off”: After Shazam, Dcu Star’s Career in Shambles as His Latest Movie Grossed Only $23 Million Losing a Lot of Money
Image
Zachary Levi was well on his way to becoming one of the A-listers of Hollywood after starring in the widely successful Shazam! However, his career seems to have peaked with that DC film as his films since have consistently been underwhelming or downright box-office disasters.

His latest film, Harold and the Purple Crayon, will reportedly debut on streaming this week, barely a month after its theatrical release. The film reportedly earned $23 million at the global box office, against a $40 million budget. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods also being a disaster, Levi’s career might just be over.

Harold And The Purple Crayon Is The Big Baffling Box Office Disaster Of The Summer
Image
Things have been looking up at the box office as of late, with movies like "Inside Out 2," "Deadpool & Wolverine," and even Neon's indie horror hit "Longlegs" lifting us out of a pretty dreadful situation. Unfortunately, the rising tide doesn't always lift all boats. Sony's "Harold and the Purple Crayon" hit theaters this past weekend, instantly becoming one of the biggest misfires of the year thus far. The only saving grace is that we're talking about a mid-budget movie and not one with a full-on blockbuster budget. Even so, things are looking rough with no reason to believe they're going to get much better.

Director Carlos Saldanha's "Harold and the Purple Crayon" opened to just $6 million domestically while playing on more than 3,300 screens. It placed at number six on the charts, placing behind "Inside Out 2" ($6.7 million), which was on its eighth weekend in theaters. This...

Zachary Levi's New Comedy Movie Becomes Another Post-Shazam Box Office Disappointment
Image
Harold and the Purple Crayon is projected to earn an opening weekend gross of $6 million. This total pales in comparison to its $40 million budget. The movie joins a recent string of box office disappointments for star Zachary Levi, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Harold and the Purple Crayon, a movie sequel to the children's book of the same name, has become another entry in a string of recent box office disappointments for star Zachary Levi. Levi had a recent hit when he starred in the 2019 DC superhero movie Shazam!. However, he followed that with roles in a string of underperforming movies including the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which became the second lowest-grossing movie of the entire interconnected franchise. This has now been capped off by the Harold and the Purple Crayon release.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Harold and the Purple Crayon is projected to earn...

April 2024 box office preview: ‘Civil War,’ Zendaya’s ‘Challengers’ top a slower month of genre films
Image
Oddly, April is going to be a month full of genre films, but it’s also a month that might make some wonder whether any of the new movies can open with more than $20 million, putting theaters back into the place they were back in January and February. Read on for Gold Derby’s April 2024 box office preview.

“Civil War” (A24 – April 12)

Considering how Alex Garland‘s previous films “Men” and “Annihilation” were received, it’s hard to believe that his edgy political apocalyptic thriller could be one of the biggest movies of this month, but it’s also likely to be A24’s first movie to hit #1 on the weekend after 10 years of releases. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons and Wagner Moura, Garland’s latest premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival, where it received mostly positive reviews. With the timeliness of the topic,...

Driven by their devout Christianity, the Erwin brothers — Andrew and Jon — have never been shy about the agenda behind their work. “Our mission,” it says on their website, “is simply to spread the Gospel further than it’s ever been using film as the medium,” and that mission has seen their Kingdom Story Company evolve into one of the biggest forces in America’s burgeoning “faith-based” sub-genre.

In light of the brothers’ stated purpose, however, it’s strange that they’ve responded to their success by making increasingly secular movies. Perhaps that’s just part of the Erwins’ plan to widen the tent and share Jesus’ light with people who haven’t necessarily sought it out for themselves, but it’s hard to overstate the difference between their self-directed 2012 debut — the virulently anti-abortion drama “October Baby” — and the latest feature they’ve produced, a hokey but harmless Hilary Swank vehicle...

Box office preview: Can ‘Demon Slayer’ or Hilary Swank make a mark as February comes to an end?
Image
It’s the last full weekend of the shorter month of February, and it’s hard to think that anything will do well enough to have any sort of impact on a month that barely recovered from January with a better-than-expected Presidents Day weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

What we get this weekend as far as new wide releases is an anime project, a faith-based drama and a quirky indie of sorts from an Oscar-winning filmmaker, which should all enter the Top 10 interspersed with returning movies.

Crunchyroll is releasing “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” into 1,962 theaters. It’s a similar theatrical release as what’s been done with “The Chosen,” in that it’s actually made up of two episodes from the popular Crunchyroll anime series, the conclusion of the “Swordsmith Village Arc” and the first episode of the “Hashira Training Arc,...

‘Ordinary Angels’ Review: Hilary Swank’s Passionate Performance Drives True Faith Based Family Drama
Image
Lionsgate’s collaboration with faith based movie producers Kingdom Story Company has reaped boxoffice rewards for both, and with their latest, Ordinary Angels, the inspiring true story of a small Kentucky town that comes together in a historic snowstorm in order to transport a 3-year-old girl to an Omaha hospital for a life-saving liver transplant, they have another surefire heartfelt film tailor-made for audiences looking for a little uplift. This actually would have made a perfect Christmas season release but has been delayed for several months, now opening in the same February corridor where Kingdom’s surprise hit, Jesus Revolution did well last year. Midwest crowds will especially respond to a never-say-never tale that is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart in this age of division.

At its center is another richly defined and dedicated Hilary Swank performance as the...

‘King Raven’ Trilogy, a Robin Hood Origin Story, Acquired by Filmmaker Brent Ryan Green (Exclusive)
Image
Director/producer Brent Ryan Green has optioned the exclusive film and television rights to develop and produce an adaptation of “King Raven,” a trilogy of historical novels by Stephen R. Lawhead. The books set the tale of Robin Hood in the late 11th century amid the Norman invasion of Wales.

Steeped in lore and the political intrigue of medieval Britain, Lawhead presents a historically plausible origin story for Robin Hood. Each title within the series is told from the viewpoint of a member of the Sherwood Forest clan in an entirely new setting.

The trilogy follows the journey of a young Welsh noble, Bran Ap Brychan, as he’s met with the trials and obstacles that craft him into King Raven, better known as Robin Hood.

Green has been credited on more than 70 film and television projects during his nearly 20 years in the industry. Past projects range from box office...

Blumhouse Horror Movie ‘Imaginary’ Rounds Out Cast With Tom Payne, Betty Buckley and More (Exclusive)
Image
“The Walking Dead” actor Tom Payne and Broadway veteran Betty Buckley have joined the cast of Blumhouse’s next movie “Imaginary,” a horror-thriller led by DeWanda Wise.

Taegen Burns (“The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”), Pyper Braun (“Desperation Road”), Matthew Sato (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”) and Veronica Falcón (“Jungle Cruise”) will round out the cast.

Lionsgate is releasing the film on March 8, 2024. It wrapped production before the writers’ and actors’ strikes — so it will arrive in theaters as planned, unlike several projects that were forced to pause for months on end.

“Imaginary” was directed by Jeff Wadlow from a script he co-wrote with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland. The story centers on Jessica (Wise), who moves back into her childhood home with her family. When her stepdaughter Alice (Braun) develops a concerning attachment to the stuffed bear, Chauncey, she finds in the basement, Jessica becomes concerned with the young girl’s behavior.

With its third week of release only halfway through, Variety has brought word that Sound of Freedom has set a major indie movie box office milestone. Having officially reached the $100 million mark, the faith-based action movie becomes the first independently produced project to surpass that bar at the domestic box office in the wake of the pandemic. Zachary Levi Says He Doesn’t Blame Dwayne Johnson for the Nixed Post-Credits Scene in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’
Image
Zachary Levi took to Instagram to clarify that he doesn’t blame Dwyane Johnson — or anyone — for nixing the originally planned post-credits scene in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which would’ve seen Justice Society of America members inviting the sequel’s title character to join their group.

On Tuesday, Levi seemed to call out Johnson after a story from The Wrap reported that the Black Adam star blocked Justice Society characters from appearing in the Shazam! sequel and shot down the possibility of a Levi cameo in his movie. In his Instagram Story, the Chuck alum shared a post mentioning the reporting and added “The truth shall set you free.”

“I may or may not have, you know, reposted something in my Stories about a story that I had nothing to do with that [The Wrap] had reported on, and then I got flack about it because people were saying ‘Oh,...

Murderbot: Full Moon releases trailer for latest Jim Wynorski film
Image
Back in 1986, director Jim Wynorski brought us the cult classic Chopping Mall (watch it Here, check out our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? episode on the film Here), which was about the robots that have been tasked with serving as the security guards in a shopping mall going on a killing spree. The original title for that movie was Killbots, and a while back it was announced that Wynorski was going to be directing a new movie called Killbots for Full Moon. It would have nothing to do with Chopping Mall, it was just going to be using that discarded original title. Well, the title plans changed along the way. The Wynorski / Full Moon project is now called Murderbot – and you can watch the trailer in the embed above!

Murderbot is scheduled to be released through the Full Moon Features streaming service on March 31st.

Starring Melissa Brasselle (The Curse of the Komodo...

‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Plummets 69% to $32 Million in Second Weekend at Box Office
Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Paul Rudd, Kathryn Newton, Evangeline Lilly, Jonathan Majors, and Jamie Andrew Cutler in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
After its strong opening weekend, Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is shaping up to be a historically frontloaded superhero film at the box office, plummeting 69% in its second weekend to $32 million.

Given its mixed reviews and audience reception, analysts and rival distributors were not expecting the third “Ant-Man” movie to make more than $40 million this weekend. But barring a much stronger-than-expected Sunday, this movie will have the largest second-weekend drop in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the largest drop for any superhero movie with a $100 million-plus opening since the 69.6% drop of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016.

With a 10-day total of $164 million, “Quantumania” should have enough momentum to cross the $200 million mark at the domestic box office. But with such a steep drop it is now questionable whether the film will have enough fuel against stiff March blockbuster competition to even pass the...

‘Jesus Revolution’ Review: Kelsey Grammer & Joel Courtney Find Religion Among The Hippies
Image
It is not often these days that you get a Hollywood studio release born out of the late-’60s and ’70s hippie movement, but in blending a true-life faith-based story with the uninhibited counterculture of the time, you have Jesus Revolution. It’s the latest spiritual exercise from the Erwin Brothers’ Kingdom Story Company virtual factory of inspirational faith-based films that really took hold with their 2018 smash hit I Can Only Imagine and more recently included the Kurt Warner football story American Underdog.

Unlike many films in the genre, which find their greatest box office success in the South and Midwest, the Erwins don’t dwell on pounding the message into their movies (thank God for that), but there is no question that belief in God when you might be at the lowest point of your life, questioning everything, is a key component, and clearly they look to real life for their inspiration.

Unlikely Movies Like Pathaan And The Wandering Earth II Are Giving The Box Office A Boost – Here's What That Means
Image
January 2022 was an odd month. There was a strong sense that 2022 was going to be much better than 2021 at the box office as the industry struggled to recover from the pandemic, in small part thanks to the success of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in late '21, which teed up the ball for greener pastures. And yes, we had a steadier stream of hits last year, but where things were really lagging had to do with anything outside of the top five (often the top three) on the charts any given weekend. It was one or two movies doing okay, while everything else was fighting for scraps. In 2023, it looks like those days may finally be behind us.

As pointed out by Exhibitor Relations, this past weekend's domestic box office totaled a little more than 70 million, with "Avatar: The Way of Water" (15.7 million) leading the way for a seventh straight weekend.
