Aubrey Plaza's newest movie is officially a critical success — which also means the studio behind the super popular film, Amazon, is pretty happy right now.
In "My Old Ass," we first meet the movie's protagonist Elliott as her younger self played by Maisy Stella as she prepares to take hallucinogenic mushrooms with her friends; when she does, she "meets" her 39-year-old self played by Plaza (who recently stunned audiences on the Marvel series "Agatha All Along"). When Older Elliott dispenses some advice — including a strangely specific note to stay away from some boy named Chad — younger Elliot is suspicious at first but realizes that following it actually helps her solve some critical problems, so she starts seeking out her older counterpart to try and get through her younger years unscathed.

My Old Ass (2024) succeeds as a time travel movie for the same reason that many classics in the subgenre have worked so successfully; it understands that time travel itself is a mechanism used to create interesting plot scenarios, regardless of whether or not the logic of the science makes any actual sense. “Back to the Future” works because the concept of a teenager meeting his parents when they were young is brilliant; similarly, the concept of reliving the same day over and over again is what makes “Groundhog Day” fun, even though it never really offers an explanation for why this is happening.
“My Old Ass” won’t be heralded in the same breath as “Back to the Future” or “Groundhog Day,” but it does find an inventive way of showing the path the inherent struggles with growing older and accepting uncomfortable truths about adulthood. At the center of Megan Park...

Megan Park’s two features, “The Fallout” and “My Old Ass,” couldn’t be more tonally different — one is about a high schooler dealing with a very contemporary trauma and one is about a high schooler connecting with her future self. With or without help from the vision of her as a 39-year-old (Aubrey Plaza), “My Old Ass” star Maisy Stella’s Elliot needs to figure out, as all high schoolers must, what kind of relationships she wants to pursue.
But a strength of Park’s work across both films is her ability to be both incredibly specific in voice, humor, and pacing about universal themes. One of the challenges and great joys of “My Old Ass” was Park’s ability to shape the film to echo the ‘90s coming-of-age stories she loves, while feeling both of this moment and somewhat timeless.

Disney has announced two new music-driven comedy series to premiere in 2025 on Disney Channel and Disney+.
One of them, “Vampirina,” is based on the children’s books by Anne Maria Pace and inspired by the Disney Jr. animated series from Chris Nee. The new series follows a young vampire girl who leaves Transylvania to attend a performing arts boarding school and pursue her passion for music — all while keeping her identity a secret, “something that’s made more challenging when her overprotective father charges an overzealous ghost to live with her at the school,” per the logline.
The other series, “How We Became the Biggest Band in the World,” follows three members of a famous pop group, Electric Bloom, as they reminisce and tell the story of their band and friendship, starting with the day they met in middle school. According to the logline, “the girls go on a journey...

That first-time feature filmmaker Hannah Peterson has been mentored by both Chloé Zhao and Sean Baker is readily apparent in her debut feature, “The Graduates,” a deep-feeling and enormously affecting look at life after terrible tragedy.
Per the film’s official synopsis, it “follows a young woman, Genevieve (breakout Mina Sundwall), as she prepares to graduate high school in the aftermath of a tragic event. As she navigates an uncertain future alongside a community that is also searching for ways to heal, they turn to each other to find hope and a way forward.” The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, where it scored strong critical reviews and won the Best Cinematography award on behalf of Dp, Carolina Costa.

My Old Ass is a wild, genre-bending adventure directed by Megan Park, blending stoner comedy, sci-fi, melodrama, and even a hint of Hallmark-style sentimentality. Park’s sophomore film, following her thoughtful debut The Fallout, offers a more absurdist take on adolescence — this time with time travel, a picturesque lake town, and the ever-charming Aubrey Plaza.
The film centres on Elliot (Maisy Stella), a small-town teen in her last summer before heading off to college, and her older, time-traveling self (Plaza), who comes back to offer guidance and support.
The Muskoka, Ontario, setting gives the movie a postcard-level charm, creating a perfect contrast with the sillier moments of the film, where pansexual stoner vibes and time-bending high jinks come into play.
While it flirts with surrealism, Park’s film manages to avoid falling into outright chaos. Instead, it uses its more bizarre elements, like Plaza’s effortlessly offbeat energy, to anchor the emotional beats.

Gen Z can be particularly hard to please, but 38-year-old Megan Park may have cracked the code.
The director behind “The Fallout” tackled a new coming-of-age story in “My Old Ass,” one that took her back to her roots in Canada on Lake Joseph.
The film follows Elliott (Maisy Stella) as she tries cherishing her last summer before heading to college, but happens to encounter her 39-year-old self, played by Aubrey Plaza. Park’s sophomore film centers Gen Z in a way that feels genuine to this era, something she noticed was missing as a young actress.
“I, for many years, was an actor in front of the camera when I was a teenager, and telling stories that didn’t always feel authentic to what my generation was experiencing or wearing or saying, and nobody ever asked me my opinion,” Park told TheWrap. She wanted to change that when she...

While the film My Old Ass may present itself as a goofy comedy exploring what it would be like to be a coming-of-age teenager meeting an older version of herself, it is instead a more existential and heartfelt drama that explores the choices that shape our lives and whether those choices should be second-guessed, ignored, or blindly followed.
On her eighteenth birthday, Elliot (Maisy Stella) embarks on a weekend camping trip with two friends – Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks) – wherein they, among other typical girl’s night out fare, partake of some hallucinogenic mushrooms that bring Maisy face-to-face with her 39-year-old self (played by Aubrey Plaza) who blatantly warns her to stay away from a mysterious boy named Chad that she has never met. Then, of course, the next day, she meets Chad and the advice doesn’t seem as unbelievable as it did just one day earlier.

Life is, so often, not at all like the movies. It’s not even like TV. There was no lightbulb moment, no ah-ha! that made actress Megan Park decide to move behind the camera for the next creative and professional chapter of her life. In fact, during her early days acting on shows like “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “Life with Derek,” Park said she remembered thinking, “I would never want to be a director.”
But while one part of Park might’ve thought “no, never,” what she was really doing was filing away the things she didn’t want to do when it came time to direct. During a recent interview with IndieWire in lower Manhattan in the weeks before the release of her second directorial effort, the Sundance hit “My Old Ass,” Park reflected on some of the earlier lessons that shaped her into such a wonderful chronicler of young,...

Sometimes, a coming-of-age film like My Old Ass helps us understand not only our past but our future. Even one that, as I have written many times before, makes you appreciate what you have and long for what you don’t. The exception is that My Old Ass is hardly manipulative.
In fact, Megan Park’s hilarious, vibrant, and overall heart-rendering tale is far from it. There are moments of familial authenticity that ring true throughout the picture. Nothing is more genuine than an older version of yourself counseling your youthful exuberance about how time is fleeting.
Those are the moments that My Old Ass depicts you remember and where you most likely hold your regret.

Growing up sucks. Time seems to move faster than we can reasonably keep pace with, the crushing disappointment of reality never quite lives up to our naïve expectations, and even the fondest of memories can fade and turn into deep wells of regret. None of these are particularly profound observations for anyone legally old enough to drink, and they're certainly nothing that countless movies haven't already addressed in every conceivable way. So when yet another R-rated coming-of-age dramedy pops up on the radar -- centered on the well-worn trope of an idealistic 18-year-old relishing her last summer at home before moving away to bigger and better things in the city -- a healthy dose of skepticism would appear to be fair game. Even a talent like Megan Park, whose directorial debut "The Fallout" instantly made her a name worth paying attention to, would be hard-pressed to wring anything new out of this premise.

Writer-director Megan Park’s upcoming film, My Old Ass, is something of a departure from her first feature The Fallout — the 2021 Jenna Ortega starrer that followed the survivors of a school shooting —although both films expertly center on a teenage point of view.
Bought at Sundance for $15M by Amazon MGM Studios, at first glance, perhaps the premise of My Old Ass seems like relatively light fare: a young woman coming of age in a beautiful Canadian lakeside town gets high on shrooms and meets her older self for a ‘what do I need to know’ chat. But then, Park works some magic, because at every screening, from Sundance onward, the audience has been reduced to sobs. Here, she explores how she stirred something deep in all of us: how quickly time passes; our missed chances, and those roads not taken. She also reveals how she first conceived of the story,...

With the momentum of stardom in her favor after Netflix’s Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will surely take on more Hollywood projects following Season 2 of Wednesday, which is currently in production.
Before these two Tim Burton projects, Ortega had roles in several other Netflix films and a television show as well as separate feature films. She got her start in a Colgate toothpaste commercial and then a Disney Channel show that mirrored the aspect of her big family.
Some might recognize Ortega as the actress who portrayed the younger version of Jane Gloriana Villanueva (portrayed by Gina Rodriguez when she’s older) in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She also appeared in Studio 666 a horror film in which the Foo Fighters move into a storied rock ‘n roll studio that starts to haunt their work. As film festival season begins to wrap up, film buffs await the theatrical and streaming releases of the films that premiered at festivals, such as Sundance and Cannes. While some of the bigger film festivals have begun prep for next season, other smaller festivals are still going strong in their own right. I had the opportunity to attend NewFest Pride in New York City, an LGBTQ+ film festival, marking the beginning of Pride Month. While looking through the different options of films to attend, ‘My Old Ass’ stuck out to me, as I recognized director, Megan Park’s name from ‘The Fallout’. ‘The Fallout’ is a hidden gem film, winning the Narrative Feature category at South by Southwest in 2021. While both films are incredibly different, ‘My Old Ass’ still features unintentional comedy and messages about living life to the fullest that ‘The Fallout’ portrayed as well. ‘My Old Ass’ originally...

Ethnobotanist and mystic Terrance McKenna would be proud of Maisy Stella’s Elliot as she consumes a “heroic dose” of dried psilocybin mushroom tea in Megan Park’s My Old Ass trailer. To Elliot’s credit, she and her friends went to nature for their psychedelic trip, which is the recommended venue. What Elliot did not account for was meeting her older self (Aubrey Plaza), creating an existential nightmare and providing insight into her future. Science fiction teaches us never to interact with our future or past selves, lest we make a universe-imploding paradox. Still, Elliot’s story ignores all that and deepens the dos and don’ts of growing up strange.

Aubrey Plaza doles out wisdom to her younger self in the first trailer for “My Old Ass,” a coming-of-age comedy that premiered to rave reviews at Sundance Film Festival.
The film takes place the summer before 18-year-old Elliot Labrant (Maisy Stella of Lennon & Maisy fame) heads to college in Toronto. In the trailer, Plaza shows up as the middle-aged version of herself while the present-day Elliot is tripping on shrooms in the woods. At first, the younger Elliot doesn’t believe what she’s seeing — and it’s not like they look anything alike.
“You’re me? I don’t have a gap in my teeth,” Stella’s character tells Plaza’s as they sit around a campfire. She’s quick to respond: “Yeah, wear your retainer.”

Aubrey Plaza is turning back the clock on heartbreak in lovable queer dramedy “My Old Ass.”
The coming-of-age feature stars breakout actress Maisy Stella as 18-year-old Elliott, who is spending her final summer on her parents’ cranberry farm before she heads to college in Toronto. After a drug trip gone awry, Elliott is visited by the older version of herself (Plaza), who warns her to not fall in love with a visiting boy (“Wednesday” alum Percy Hynes White) working on her dad’s farm.
Megan Park (“The Fallout”) writes and directs the feature that centers on Elliott’s awakening into adulthood. Margot Robbie produces the indie film, along with Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Steven Rales.
Sia collaborator and “Dance Moms” alum Maddie Ziegler and Kerrice Brooks co-star. And yes, this isn’t Plaza’s first time, well, time traveling: the actress previously starred in Colin Trevorrow’s “Safety Not Guaranteed.

Maisy Stella, playing 18-year-old Elliot Labrant, finds her future self at age 39 (played by Aubrey Plaza) in the trailer for Megan Park’s My Old Ass, which dropped on Thursday.
The time-bending coming-of-age tale comes by way of a summer mushroom trip that Elliot goes on with her girlfriends while holidaying in cottage country north of Toronto before heading off to college. While tripping next to a campfire, Elliot meets Plaza’s character seated on the same log, only she’s two decades her senior — and full of warnings about what her younger self should or shouldn’t do.

You’re watching your favorite show, and one of the main characters is in a jam.
He’s held captive by mercenaries and, for the past two episodes, has struggled to escape a labyrinthine prison. It’s unclear whether our hero will live or die, but the next episode opens with a warning: “The following contains a depiction of suicide. Viewer discretion is advised.” Welp, you think, I know how this story ends.
So what happens when trigger warnings need spoiler warnings? As content disclaimers trend in television, some viewers are taking issue when they give away crucial plot details or ruin surprises.
Take Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” which dulled a shocking assault scene with a preemptive warning reading, “The following episode contains depictions of sexual violence which some viewers may find troubling.” Or Apple TV+’s “Severance,” which tipped viewers off to an episode cliffhanger by revealing, “The following contains a depiction of self-harm.

After a particularly harrowing setback to his mission in The Fallout, the new series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Westworld), a bounty hunter known as The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) makes the executive decision to change course entirely. Although his less experienced traveling companion/prisoner protests, The Ghoul knows better. “The wasteland’s got its own golden rule,” he snarls. “Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every time.”
That most of Prime Video’s Fallout consists of getting sidetracked by bullshit is simultaneously one of its main charms and one of its most frustrating flaws. At its liveliest, the sci-fi adventure captures the fun of simply getting to explore a strange new world, meeting colorful characters and going down mysterious rabbit holes. But the lack of urgency also means its eight hours take an awfully long time to get where it’s going.

Tom Cruise was on a winning streak with Top Gun: Maverick becoming the biggest hit of his career. However, his latest Mission: Impossible film surprisingly failed at the box office, losing somewhere around $40 million for Paramount Pictures. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the high production budget and several other unfortunate factors contributed to the film’s box office disaster. Amidst the financial failure, one critical aspect of the film was overlooked – its real-world relevance.
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
The film impressed critics and fans as it raised the stakes even more by introducing the most powerful villain yet. Ethan Hunt and his team had to take down a non-tangible AI villain, The Entity, in the film and their mission will continue in the next Mission: Impossible film.

The summer between the end of high school and for some, college, can be filled with an unequal combination of anxiety and anticipation. Anxiety of the unknown and anticipation of new and novel experiences, of new friends and new relationships, can be overwhelming. Via Canadian-born writer-director Megan Park’s (The Fallout) second film, My Old Ass, a heartrending, coming-of-age comedy-drama, that last summer before college can be both a time to celebrate future possibilities and mourn the loss of the past, including the family, parents, and siblings individually and collectively, left behind. For Park, the past may or may not be immutable, but remembering it free of nostalgia and recognizing the transitory nature of time, memory, and relationships are more than worthwhile: They’re essential. When we...

It’s always a welcome surprise to encounter a fresh face who’s also a natural screen presence, which is very much the case with the captivating Maisy Stella in My Old Ass. Not to undersell the newcomer’s individuality, but I kept getting a crunchy granola version of Clueless-era Alicia Silverstone, which is no faint praise. The fact that Stella is often bouncing off Aubrey Plaza in peerless sardonic form just sweetens the deal. Megan Park’s enjoyable second feature is a warm blend of comedy, romance and whimsical collapsed-time fantasy, albeit grounded in the protagonist’s real world.
Not since Toy Story 3 wielded its power to reduce grown-ass adults to puddles of tears has a movie been so in touch with the tender feelings associated with leaving home and saying a definitive goodbye to childhood, wistfully contemplating what we take with us and what we leave behind.

Elliott (Maisy Stella) is ready for her life to start. The last 18 years? That’s been killing time, practice, kid stuff, and as we meet the teen on her 18th birthday, mere weeks before she’s about to leave her cozy Canadian lakeside community for college in Toronto (read: the real world!), Elliott is hellbent on leaving that stuff behind. In Megan Park’s warm-hearted “My Old Ass,” Elliott is forced to grapple — most unexpectedly, most literally — with the past and the present and the future, and all the iterations of her that will populate those time periods.
First, there are the mushrooms. Elliott and her best pals Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks) ingest the hallucinogens to celebrate that key birthday, an experience that sees Ruthie talking to animals and Ro dancing to music only she can hear… and Elliott? She finds herself. More correctly: her old self finds her.
