Berlin, Feb 16 (Ians) Berlin Film Festival jury President Kristen Stewart doesn’t buy the talk that movies are dead. At a press conference in Germany on Thursday afternoon to commemorate the launch of the 73rd annual Berlinale, she declared that cinema will live forever, reports ‘Variety’.
“Take a quick glance at your rear view mirror,” said Stewart, taking questions from reporters, according to ‘Variety’. “We have never stopped telling each other stories.”
She then nodded to headlines about weakened international box office receipts as a result of the pandemic. “How much it costs, obviously like we’re headed towards oblivion on that one. I also think that there’s a sort of, like, vital, desperate need in all of us to create something. And yeah, I think when you start really fixating on, like, the industry, it’s easy to be like, ‘Oh, God, it’s all falling apart!’ But...

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

"This is history! Right here, right now!" Trafalgar Releasing has revealed the first trailer for a music history doc film called Oasis Knebworth 1996, which is about that exact concert. It is not a concert doc, per se, although it's being marketed as one. It's a "look back at" the iconic Oasis concert at Knebworth Park outside of London. This trailer launch marks 25 years to the very day since the first night of the record-breaking Knebworth 1996 concerts. With a setlist packed from beginning to end with stone cold classics, including Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger, the Knebworth concerts were both the pinnacle of the band's success and a landmark gathering of a generation. Directed by Jake Scott featuring extensive concert and exclusive never-before seen footage, "this is a joyful and at times poignant cinematic celebration of one of the most important concert events of the last...

Further new openers include Lionsgate’s ‘Farming’, eOne’s ‘The Day Shall Come’.
Two contrasting titles are among the new openers at the UK box office this weekend, as Universal’s animated comedy Abominable goes up against Paramount’s Will Smith action drama Gemini Man.
However the new openers will have to score strongly to knock Warner Bros’ Joker from top spot, which scored a huge £12.6m debut last weekend.
Abominable is a DreamWorks Animation production, about a magical Yeti in Shanghai on a quest to reunite with his family on Mount Everest. Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai and Tenzing Norgay Trainor lead the voice cast.

“American Woman” is what happens when you put a male director and screenwriter together to tell a story about their idea of a woman’s journey through traumatic events, time, and age. Director Jake Scott (“Welcome to the Rileys”) and writer Brad Ingelsby (“Run All Night”) manage to do a lot without ever touching the complex and emotional inner psyche of a working-class woman whose life is turned continuously upside down.
Debra (Sienna Miller) is a 33-year-old grandmother, becoming a single mom at the age of 16, with her own daughter Bridget following almost exactly the same path. Debra works as a cashier at a grocery store, lives across the street from her loving but disapproving older sister Katherine (Christina Hendricks), and babysits her grandson on nights she is not busy with the married man she’s dating.

Gratuitously prolific director Harold Cronk keeps cranking them out. Fascinated by supposedly undamaged people who turn out to be spiritually shattered given the absence of religious submissiveness in their lives, this month alone he’s behind two faith-based releases sporting such a premise: last week’s” God Bless the Broken Road,” and now “Unbroken: Path to Redemption.”
Both follow an individual’s transformation from sinfully reproaching God to realizing their woes are punishment for straying away from Him.
Produced with meager resources, “Path to Redemption” sneakily professes itself as a sort-of sequel to Angelina Jolie’s 2014 sophomore directorial effort “Unbroken,” even though they don’t share any cast members, below-the-line crew, or screenwriters. Most importantly, they are eons apart in storytelling dexterity, technical quality, and tone. Jolie’s feature was far from glorious and earned her mixed reviews, but it’s nonetheless an incomparably superior exercise in period filmmaking.

For Jake Scott, taking on American Woman as his latest feature came down to a strong connection to the material at hand, as well as the film’s central character—a woman going through hell. A director known for films including Welcome to the Rileys who happens to be the eldest son of Ridley Scott, Scott’s latest drama centers on Deb (Sienna Miller), a woman raising her young grandson after her daughter goes missing.
“[It] activated lots of things in me as a dad and as a filmmaker,” Scott told Deadline about the script from Brad Ingelsby (Out of the Furnace). “I grew up that weird kid that didn’t like Star Wars. The script comes from Brad Ingelsby (Run All Night), and it’s this that has become the talk of the town – drawing in some notable names.
Sienna Miller, Jacki Weaver, Aaron Paul and Christina Hendricks – each award-winning performers in their own right – will join the cast of The Burning Woman, under the direction of Jake Scott, who is the son of Ridley, and previously helmed Welcome To The Rileys. Details of the plot for the film are still few and far between at this point. "Starting over is a fantasy most of us can only dream of." This is technically a commercial for a car, but it's also an intriguing short film made by a good filmmaker. Le Fantôme is the latest short made by director Jake Scott, who some may remember as director of Welcome to the Rileys with Kristen Stewart (premiered at Sundance in 2010). The short stars Mads Mikkelsen as an assassin, who is assigned to take out a married couple, but things get complicated. As much as I usually dislike such blatant car marketing like this, it's fun to see Mikkelsen doing this and the short has a mysterious edge to it - almost like a James Bond film. Note: we were not contacted by Ford at all, this is being posted without any incentive. Thanks to SlashFilm for the tip. The new short film “Le Fantôme” (The Ghost), created for the new Ford Edge SUV, centers around an enigmatic stranger and a couple who no longer exist.
Directed by Jake Scott and starring Mads Mikkelsen, the dramatic eight-minute movie shows the “Hannibal” actor as a hitman in pursuit of a couple starting a new life under witness protection. As he watches the pair closely and is about to attack, he gets distracted after catching a glimpse of the new Ford vehicle from afar.
“Everyday we make choices, choices that shape our lives and sometimes the lives of others,” Mikkelsen says before he breaks into the couples garage and checks out the mesmerizing car.

Before you see him on the big screen in two of the biggest blockbusters of the year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Doctor Strange, Mads Mikkelsen has continued embracing his own brand of peculiar characters in a new short film, which also doubles as a slick ad.

At 26, Kristen Stewart is already a veteran of the industry. She’s been acting since the tender age of eight, spotted by an agent while performing in her elementary school’s holiday play, and since then has juggled massive franchises and prestige work alike. After all that, she still resists talking about her performances in the bland industry lingo that so many performers adopt with their rising profiles.
For example, don’t ask her what it’s like to play her roles. Or, rather, don’t use the word “play.”
“‘Play’ sounds like ‘lie’ to me, and I’m just trying to do the opposite,” Stewart recently told IndieWire. She’d already slipped up once during the conversation, when referring to her Cesar Award-winning role in Olivier Assayas’ “Clouds of Sils Maria.”
So what do you call whatever it is the ubiquitous star does whenever she surfaces in another movie?...

Like the genetic matter those brainy Engineers scatter about in Prometheus, Ridley Scott’s DNA is a potent filmmaking force in its own right. Two of his offspring, oldest son Jake (Welcome To The Rileys, Plunkett & Macleane) and daughter Jordan (Cracks), have already directed movies and now the third, Luke Scott, is joining them with his debut film Morgan. The sci-fi thriller has just added Kate Mara to its cast list.Mara will be joined by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy, who impressed Sundance audiences with her turn in buzzed-about horror The Witch. Morgan's plot focuses on a corporate risk-management consultant, although the actual corporate risk-management depicted on screen will likely be kept to a minimum when the consultant is summoned to a remote lab to evaluate an artificial being with a view to its termination. There’s shades of Ex Machina in Seth Owen’s 2014 Black List script, although it also taps into Ridley’s A.

30 years ago today, John Hughes's teen movie The Breakfast Club opened in the Us, and although it wasn't a runaway box office hit, in the years since it has rightly claimed a place as a screen classic.
Buoyed by brilliant performances, a sharp script and direction from Hughes and that Simple Minds track, this is a film we return to again and again. But what happened to its stars? We go then and now with the cast to find out what happened to the brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the criminal.
Anthony Michael Hall - Brian Johnson
A staple of John Hughes movies in the '80s, Hall brought endearing geeky charm to National Lampoon's Vacation , Sixteen Candles and Weird Science.
As he grew out of child star roles, Hall sought to shed his established screen persona with a diverse selection of character parts across film and TV.

The word coming out of Tiff about Kristen Stewart’s performance in Clouds of Sils Maria mirrors the word that came out of earlier festival runs. It boils down to, “Surprise! She’s an actress!,” but Sam said it a bit more eloquently in his review: “Stewart is magnetic, devoid of the amateurish affectations that have plagued her in the past (the nail and lip biting, the hair twirling). In Clouds she’s sexy, confident and articulate, with oversized rims and enough vulnerability to draw you in.” For her fans, this has to be both a No Shit, Sherlock moment and a vindication of sorts. Here’s the child star from Panic Room (who David Fincher must have seen something in) proving that her persistence in the industry isn’t a fluke. For the skeptical, it may signal a maturation — the next step in talent evolution for a promising figure who hadn’t yet lived up to...

Last night, amidst the butts and the Feminism and the important message from Miley Cyrus, the VMAs bestowed its latest award for Best Direction to Daniels, aka Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, for helming the Lil Jon and DJ Snake music video for “Turn Down For What.” You didn’t miss that part of the show, because this category isn’t millennial-friendly enough for the telecast (nor was the one given to Oscar-nominated art director Anastasia Masaro), but somewhere in the night there were some Moonman statues given to a duo that might just be the franchise film directors of the future. In winning the award, Kwan and Scheinert follow in the footsteps of such notable directors as David Fincher (The Social Network), Spike Jonze (Her), Adam Yauch (Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot That!), Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo), Tarsem Singh (Mirror Mirror), Jake Scott (Welcome to the Rileys), Samuel Bayer (Nightmare on Elm Street), Steve Barron (the...

The Sopranos and Man Who Wasn't There star who died in June 2013 remembered at Oscar ceremony
• Xan Brooks liveblogs the ceremony
• Full list of winners as they're announced
The Oscars paid tribute to James Gandolfini, the award-winning actor who died last year – devoting part of its traditional In Memoriam section to the actor best known for the TV show The Sopranos.
Gandolfini began his career as a bit-part film actor, before moving up to bigger roles in the likes of Sidney Lumet's Night Falls on Manhattan, which he played corrupt cop Joey Allegretto. But it was on the small screen that Gandolfini really made his mark, as mobster Tony Soprano in David Chase's multi-award-winning HBO show. Gandolfini then went on to secure major roles in films such as The Man Who Wasn't There, for the Coen brothers, In the Loop for Armando Iannucci, and Jake Scott's Welcome to the Rileys.

With 111.5-million U.S. viewers, and a further 7.3-million in Canada, Super Bowl Xlviii was the most-watched in history. The commercial spots were the most expensive for any TV broadcast in any given year, and there were plenty of big name stars and A-list directors who helped create these very expensive advertisements. John Hillcoat, director of The Road, helmed the spot for Coke. The minute long ad featuring a multilingual rendition of “America the Beautiful” was refreshing to many, but left a bitter taste in the mouth of conservative pundits. Bruce Willis and Fred Armisen get close for Hyundai, and prolific music video and film director, Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), re-teamed with U2 for the Bank of America “Invisible spot”(Romanek directed U2 in an Apple commercial in 2004). The small screen rarely attracts this many big screen filmmakers in one night, so we decided to vote on our...

I usually really enjoy the commercials during the Super Bowl, but this year it seemed like most of them were just as bad as the game. I thought I'd do a compilation post featuring several of the commercials that aired during the game. I have to point out, though, that the Axe commercial was so laughably bad. You might be surprised by some of the directors that made these commercial as well. What were your favorite and least favorite commercials during the big game?

For the people of New Orleans, even the promises of redevelopment come with strings attached, and every dollar that shows up – whether from government disaster relief, or from venture capital, or even from those seeking to remake New Orleans in the wake of Katrina – carries with it new dynamics and new risks. National interest has waned, moving on to the next headline, but those who know and love the Crescent City have no choice. They must find their way back to what matters in the life of their city.

Amidst the Twi-hard craze, you may have missed Bella Swan's Kristen Stewart's 2010 indie film "Welcome to the Rileys", in which she starred opposite the late James Gandolfini.
Back in 2010, Stewart spoke to MTV News' Josh Horowitz about what it was like to work with the Emmy-winning actor. "It was intimidating, but at the same time — like it always is with actors like that — it really pushes you hard," she said. She also revealed that it was "oddly comforting" to work alongside Hollywood veterans Gandolfini and co-star Melissa Leo.
Upon hearing the news of Gandolfini's death last Wednesday, Stewart opened up to Entertainment Weekly about her friend and on-screen companion. "When I heard of James’ passing I was in New Orleans, where we met shooting, and every memory flooded back and gutted me. I’ll hold that time near to me forever. He was immeasurably great. My heart goes out to his beloved family.
