Obsessed is based on a script by screenwriter David Lougherty.
The short answer is yes, but let's not forget that Fatal Attraction (1987) (1987) wasn't the first movie to use this plot outline. First was Play Misty for Me (1971) in 1971. Then came a slew of movies throughout the 1980s and '90s and going on into the successive early '00s using the same basic plot and only changing one or two things. Some examples include The Fan (1981) (1981), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) (1989), Jungle Fever (1991) (1991), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) (1992),Unlawful Entry (1992), Basic Instinct (1992) (1992), Single White Female (1992) (1992) and its sequel Single White Female 2: The Psycho (2005) (2005), The Temp (1993) (1993), The Crush (1993) (1993), Sliver (1993) (1993), Disclosure (1994) (1994), A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996) (1996), Fear (1996) (1996), The Fan (1996) (1996) (not a remake of the 1981 film), One Night Stand (1997) (1997), Unfaithful (2002) (2002), Swimfan (2002) (2002), Wicker Park (2004) (2004), Match Point (2005) (2005), Derailed (2005) (2005), I Think I Love My Wife (2007) (2007), Lakeview Terrace (2008) (2008) and Homecoming (2009) (2009).
Lisa breaks into Derek and Sharon's home and awaits Derek's return home from work. She takes off her pants and lays on the bed. Sharon, remembering she forgot to set the alarm, goes back and hears Lisa upstairs. Sharon finds Lisa in her bed and threatens to call the police, but Lisa grabs her arm and Sharon angrily throws her down to the floor. Lisa retaliates by shoving Sharon into a drawer and then attacking her with a lamp. Derek phones home and Lisa eagerly answers it. Sharon tries to wrestle the phone away from Lisa and headbutts her. Lisa falls to the ground in pain. Sharon tells Derek she'll call him back and hangs up the phone. Lisa races out of the bedroom and into the hallway, but Sharon catches up with her and shoves her into the wall, then throws her down on the floor. Sharon grabs her legs and tries to pull her along the floor, but Lisa hangs on to the stair railing. Sharon grabs Lisa up by the head and punches her in the face, dropping her to the floor. Sharon picks Lisa up and tries to throw her over the stair railing, but Lisa elbows her in the face and she stumbles back. Lisa holds her over the stair railing, strangling her. Sharon tries to get her off her and the two roll down the stairs and Lisa scrambles back up, kicking Sharon in the face. When Sharon comes around, Lisa is nowhere to be seen. Sharon goes up into the attic. In the attic, Lisa repeatedly attacks Sharon with a plank of wood. Sharon remembers a weak spot in the floorboards and deliberately leads Lisa to it. Lisa falls through the floor and holds on to the edges. Sharon, feeling guilty, holds out her hand for her to grab on to. But, Lisa, consumed with jealousy of everything Sharon has, tries to pull her down with her. Sharon takes off her wrist watch that Lisa is holding on to and Lisa falls, but grabs on to the chandelier. The chandelier snaps and Lisa falls on to the glass-topped table below. Lisa opens her eyes and begins to rise up when the broken chandelier gives in and lands on top of her, impaling and killing her. Sharon makes her way outside where Detective Reese awaits her. Reese goes inside to see what happened just as Derek pulls up. Sharon and Derek hug each other as the film ends in a freeze frame.
