It has the same team behind it, sure, but it's a completely different story. It can't really be compared. Other than Rooney's affinity with slender, intelectual, dark-haired female protagonists that is.
Conversations with Friends felt as fresh as Normal People did upon first watch, although admittedly the first few episodes felt quite slow and awkward. It didn't grip me as imeddiately as NP did, but I continued past those initilal first episodes and I'm glad that I did having now finished it.
I was really surprised with the relationships I developed with the characters, in particular Frances/Nick. I felt at first like I didn't care for them, but by the last few minutes of the series I was totally rooting for them. I love Rooney's open endings, although I'm aware they're not everybody's cup of tea, but I'd reccomend holding out as this did feel like quite the resolve.
The cinematography was perfect, and I like how they shot this on film. It carried a very obvious different look to a lot of locations you will have seen before in NP, and I believe that was purposeful so not to repeat the same series that did so well before. The writing, editing, and acting for the most part was poignant, and the characters felt so real.
This isn't a straightforward story of romance and love, but an exploration on what it means to be monogamous and what kind of love can and should exist outside of that societal norm, and how confusing that can all become. An overbearingly real, depressing and honest sociopolitical commentary on life in the 21st century, with meaningful/relatable characters beautifully presented.
