At the First Time Fest, accomplished filmmakers came to teach and advocate new filmmakers how to get their film made and how to make their film popular. As part of the How They Did It Panel Series, the “We Need A Bigger Boat-Producing Independent Cinema” panel had producers speak about the struggles they had not only making their first films, but also the films they’re working on right now.
Guests of the Producers Panel were Josh Astrachan, who produced Gosford’s Park, as well as Rose Ganguzza, whose latest and widely distributed film was Margin Call. Jonathan Grey was in attendance as well, having produced not only Margin Call but Machete as well recently. Dolly Hall, who produced 54, was there as well, with Bob Salerno talking about Arbitrage and Tim Perell, who produced The Rebound. Two of our favorite John Cusack (2012) movies are High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank, and we’re thrilled to finally have them on high-definition Blu-ray.

Catherine Zeta-Jones took a hiatus from acting late last decade, but she’s been back in the game with The Rebound and Sundance Weinstein pick-up Lay the Favorite. Now, she’s continuing that working streak with Red 2. At 42, it might be a little early for her to retire. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winner has signed on alongside Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Dame Helen Mirren who will be reprising their roles. The screenwriters, Erich and Jon Hoeber, are also back, but director Robert Schwentke is not. He’s currently working on R.I.P.D., which may or may not be the reason, but Dean Parisot will be taking his spot. Parisot is also an Oscar winner, having won for Best Live-Action Short Film back in 1989 and going on to direct Galaxy Quest and Fun With Dick and Jane. It’s an interesting background he brings, but the comedy angle is easy to see. So...

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

Catherine Zeta-Jones hasn’t been a major player in the world of romantic comedies for quite some time, and in her absence the likes of Katherine Heigl, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Aniston have unleashed a stream of monochromatic fare. The Rebound had a chance to shake things up as an unconventional love story between a recently separated 40-something mother of two and her male 25-year-old nanny. An age gap of that size is typically used for laughs in romantic comedies, with a wily cougar pursuing a bewildered but not entirely unwilling young buck. In The Rebound, it’s a much more honest and contemplative coupling that gives Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha a chance to shine with two quirky kids, but they ultimately fizzle out from a complete lack of any romantic spark and a script that flinches in the final act.

You don't need to see many movies to understand that in Hollywood, once a woman hits forty, she suddenly lacks relevance. She's not sexy, she's not assertive, and if she doesn't have a man, there must be something wrong with her. Just recently, Twitter users collapsed under a Super Bowl-related avalanche of anti-Madonna tweets. As she played the halftime show, many wanted to discuss the abnormality of her body, and her biceps -- she was being punished for actively trying to stay relevant at an advanced age. We should all be so lucky. In Bart Freundlich's "The Rebound," credit must be given to the filmmaker who at least has the teremity to not portray luminous leading lady Catherine Zeta-Jones as a sex object. Her Sandy, a fussy career woman, just left her husband's side due to his infidelity, moving to the city with two chatty moppets. Her interest lies in the world of sports,...

When Steven Soderbergh's Traffic came out in 2000, Catherine Zeta-Jones was at the top of her game. She was one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood and only two years away from her first Oscar. In the years since, however, Zeta-Jones hasn't been around nearly as much. She hasn't appeared in a feature film since 2009's The Rebound, but now she's starting to make her comeback. Stephen Frears' Lay The Favorite is currently playing at the Sundance Film Festival, Adam Shankman's Rock of Ages comes out in a few months, and Gabriele Muccino's Playing The Field will be arriving in December. Now, however, she's cemented her comeback: she's working with Soderbergh again. According to Deadline, Zeta-Jones has signed on to star in The Side Effects. A thriller written by Scott Z. It's hard to believe, but by the time 2012 rolls it will have been five years since we've seen Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen. You have to go back to 2007's middling double whammy of "No Reservations" and "Death Defying Acts" but since then--and not counting the 2009 comedy "The Rebound" which is stuck in some kind of terminal sales/distributor limbo--she's been laying low (taking care of her husband, cancer survivor Michael Douglas, and generally being there for her family). The people behind “R.I.P.D.” are hoping to start filming in September, which means casting needs to be finalized soon. Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges are already the leads and Kevin Bacon has already been cast as a villain of some sort, and now actress Stephanie Szostak is in negotiations to play Reynolds’ wife.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, her character will be still be alive but is somehow able to sense her dead husband's presence. Does she have psychic powers, or is her love so strong it will continue after death? Either way, it's a lead role, so don’t expect her to be some forgotten wife only showing up for a scene or two.
French-American actress Szostak began acting professionally in the 2000s and has starred in “The Devil Wears Prada,” “The Rebound,” and “Dinner for Schmucks.” In the realm of television, she’s been in “The Sopranos” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

2007 looked like a good time to launch a large-scale film production company. But just as Film Department chairman Mark Gill and vice-chairman Neil Sacker raised considerable funding, the indie market hit the skids with the recession. With more than one bonafide hit beyond $40-million Gerard Butler vehicle Law-Abiding Citizen (Overture domestic, $133 million worldwide) to balance a slate of uncommercial movies--from $16.8 million The Rebound to $16 million cancer romance A Little Bit of Heaven, neither of which saw stateside release--the company might have survived. But finally all the money they made went to their investors, and by the time they faced the music and tried to refinance, it was too late. (Deadline ran early with Gill and Sacker's press release packed with financial ...

With one hit movie under its belt and two promising films in the can, The Film Department is shutting down May 27 -- a victim of the credit crunch and, perhaps, shifts in the industry. The company's 2009 "Law Abiding Citizen" starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, was a $40 million project that grossed $133 million at the worldwide box office. And The Film Department has finished "The Rebound," with Catherine Zeta-Jones, and "A Little Bit of Heaven," starring Kate Hudson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Whoopi Goldberg and Kathy Bates. Yet the company,...

Catherine Zeta-Jones hasn't been on screen in the past few years (her last film, Bart Freundlich's 2009 effort The Rebound, is still seeking distribution) but she is starting to get new roles. She'll be in Lay the Favorite with Bruce Willis, and now Adam Shankman has cast her as a new character in his film adaptation of the stage musical Rock of Ages. THR [1] reports that her character, created for the film, is the movie's villain. Mr. Shankman says, It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month... The character was invented to streamline the stories. He describes her as if "Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child. She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock’n roll in the great city of Los Angeles." (Catherine Zeta-Jones is no stranger to the musical, having won an Oscar for Chicago.

Catherine Zeta-Jones' career trajectory has always befuddled me. After years of television work and small films, the actress finally made it big in the late 90s and even won an Oscar for her performance in 2002's Chicago. Despite the huge win, however, her workload never seemed to increase, averaging only one to two movies per year since. Even stranger, she hasn't been in a movie since the 2009 comedy The Rebound with Justin Bartha. As of recently, Zeta-Jones has finally been getting back in the game, taking roles in movies like Lay the Favorite and Playing The Field, and now she's signed up for another one. Returning to the genre that won her an Academy Award, THR reports that Catherine Zeta-Jones has landed a role in Adam Shankman's Rock of Ages. Playing a role that wasn't originally featured in the Broadway play, she will play the film's villain, described...

It’s another singing and dancing routine for Catherine Zeta-Jones. Deadline is reporting the actress will join the cast of “Rock of Ages” as a new role that has been created for the movie version. She will be playing the wife of the mayor of Los Angeles, a conservative character who wants to get rid of rock and roll. “There are so many plotlines in the piece, we thought it would be fun to create a villain, and a cultural discussion point,” said Adam Skankman, director of the film. “She’s the moral majority person, kind of like Tipper Gore and Anita Bryand had a love child in that era. To have a great actress who won an actress in this genre with ‘Chicago’ is wonderful.” It was also revealed she will take part and sing Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” and Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.

It has been a long, long time since we've seen Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen. Ok, she did make the rom-com "The Rebound" with Justin Bartha a few years back but that film is still trying to find a buyer, but a big role in the upcoming "Rock of Ages" might get fresh interest in that title which is currently sitting on a shelf. THR reports that Zeta-Jones will play the villain of the film, a role that wasn't in the stage musical. Director Adam Shankman describes the character as "if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love…...
