Granted, when I sat down to watch the 2021 horror movie titled "The Mutation" from writer and director Scott Jeffrey, I must admit that the movie had that particular traditional and classic 1980s horror feel to it. And that was the biggest reason for me sitting down to watch it, well, that and the fact that it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen.
Well, sadly, the movie's cover was actually the best thing about the ordeal that is "The Mutation". I kid you not.
Yeah, the storyline here is pretty straight forward, so at least Scott Jeffrey did manage to pull that off. But at the same time, the storyline was so predictable and generic that the movie quickly ran out of fuel and became a drag to sit through. So you are not finding yourself in for a rollercoaster of a horror movie if you opt to sit down to watch "The Mutation".
The acting in the movie was fair enough. Sure, you are not sitting down to watch a grand thespian performance of Shakespearian level. But on the other hand, there are far worse B-movie performances in the horror genre. So the actors and actresses that took a part in "The Mutation" did the best with the material at hand, or so I would like to think.
Visually then "The Mutation" was somewhat of a swing and a miss. Sure, the creature concept was interesting enough, and the suit actually did look quite alright. But it was just that; a suit. And it was painstakingly obvious exactly just that; a man in a creature suit. Especially the non-articulate face, that was a buzz-killer.
I am sure that there is an audience out there for a low budget horror movie such as "The Mutation", I just wasn't particularly much a member of that audience.
My rating of "The Mutation" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.
