"Zinotchka", directed by Christopher Miles, was made for the BBC's 'FULL HOUSE' arts programme, which invited 7 directors (the others were Jonathan Miller, Ken Loach, Karel Reisz, Gavin Millar, Ben Rea and Stephen Frears) to make 7 short films from short stories by Anton Tchekhov and James Joyce in 1972.
One of Anton Tchekhov's short stories is about first-hate, rather than first-love, as recollected by an old officer in the Russian Guards during a shooting party at the end of the 19th century. He admits to his fellow huntsmen how he held his governess to mental ransom, having seen her making love to his older brother near the lake of his country house. He never forgot that terrible look of hate she gave him on leaving the house for the last time.
