Rights to “I, The Executioner,” which will premiere as a Midnight Screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year, have been picked up by South Korea’s Cj Enm.

The crime-action film directed by Ryu Seung-wan (also written Ryoo Seung-wan) is a sequel to Ryu’s 2015 hit “Veteran” and in Korea goes by the title “Veteran 2.”

Few details of the story have yet been disclosed, but Cj describes the film as “combining Ryu’s trademark action with observations and messages about social change.” Ryu last year enjoyed major box office success with crime comedy “Smugglers.”

Hwang Jung-min, who recently enjoyed box office success in “12.12: The Day,” reprises his role from “Veteran.” He is joined in the sequel by Jung Hae-in (“Tune in for Love”) as a new member of the film’s Violent Crime Investigation Squad.

Na Hong-Jin will direct the Korean thriller for Plus M Entertainment.

Award-winning Korean actors Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Hoyeon have joined Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender in the cast of upcoming thriller Hope.

The Korean feature is directed by Na Hong-jin, marking his first film since The Wailing in 2016, and is backed by Korean producer-distributor Plus M Entertainment.

Hwang starred in The Wailing, which played at Cannes, and is also known for Netflix’s Narco-Saints, Cannes 2022 title Hunt and Berlin 2023 feature Kill Boksoon.

Exclusive: A hot project just got hotter. Emmy-nominated Korean actress and model Hoyeon, who made waves with Netflix’s Squid Game, is set to make her feature debut in director Na Hong-Jin’s Korean thriller Hope, which we revealed earlier today.

She joins Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender.

This is the first project from acclaimed Korean director Na since 2016 hit The Wailing, and it’ll mark Hoyeon’s first starring role in a Korean project since she made her screen debut in Squid Game.

The largely Korean-language film will follow the residents of Hopo Port, where a mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. Before long, the residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before. Hoyeon will play a policewoman.

Additional casting and pre-production is underway for a shoot later this year in Korea.

“Squid Game” star Hoyeon is now set to star in Na Hong-jin’s upcoming film “Hope,” joining Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Deadline reported her casting the same day that the film itself was announced.

The movie will be Hoyeon’s first feature, after she earned an Emmy nomination for her acting debut in Netflix’s 2021 series “Squid Game.” Prior to that series, she was known primarily for her work as a model. Hoyeon will next star in Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” and is also attached to Joe Talbot’s film “The Governesses,” which also stars Lily-Rose Depp and Renate Reinsve. Netflix has revealed the first images from “Hunger,” an upcoming Thai drama film in which a woman in her twenties chases her dreams in the unsavory world of fine dining.

The film stars Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, locally known as ‘Aokbab’ and internationally recognized as the star of “Bad Genius,” in the lead role. She plays alongside Gunn Svasti Na Ayudhya (“Diary of Tootsies”) as the sous-chef who gives her a break and Nopachai ‘Peter’ Jayanama as her ingenious and intolerant rival.

The Korean writer and director team of Choi Suk-kwan and Lee Joon-ik had already established themselves as box office smashers with “Radio Days” and “The King and the Clown”, when they decided to shoot “The Happy Life”, and with actors like Kim Yoon-seok, Jung Ji-young and Kim Sang-ho the result was predefined as highly entertaining, a prediction it fulfilled utterly.

South Korean sales company Finecut has done a raft of deals on Korea-Thailand shaman horror title The Medium, produced by Na Hong-jin and directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun.

International and indie film distributor Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Korean film Escape From Mogadishu. It will open in theaters in the U.S. and Canada August 6 following a July 28 release in Korea.

The film is based on true events and chronicles the harrowing experience of bitterly opposed North and South Korean diplomats trapped in the city of Mogadishu at the advent of the Somalian civil war in 1991. The dramatic years-long conflict, which exploded following the rebel-led ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, was introduced to American audiences through blockbuster film Black Hawk Down, which picks up the narrative in war-torn Mogadishu in 1993.

“The film portrays this almost unfathomable event that throws the horrors of war into sharp relief,” said Well Go CEO Doris Pfardrescher. She noted the production team’s careful study of surviving embassy records and historical accounts to create the most realistic possible depiction.

Extending the work of and then building up to the annual London Korean Film Festival in the autumn, the Teaser Screenings showcase a diverse range of contemporary cinema across the year. The count down to the 2021 London Korean Film Festival includes a season that offers UK audiences a chance to see the latest film releases from Korea. James Gunn is always up for sharing his opinions (for better or for worse) as well as interacting with fans on Twitter. Just the other day, in fact, he shared a list of 27 sequels better than the original and before that, he recommended 10 movies to watch during quarantine. But now, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director has revealed a new list of films to watch during self-isolation and has come up with 54 action movies that he believes are an A+.

New Delhi - The 13th Mumbai Film Festival, a Reliance Entertainment initiative and organized by Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami) will see Hugh Hudson - director of 1981's multiple Oscar winning Chariots of Fire - heading the international competition section jury.

Mff will take place in Mumbai from Oct. 13 - 20, with the international jury including director Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies), Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski (The Shout) and Korean director Na Hong-Jin (The Chaser and The Yellow Sea).

Last year's Mff jury was headed by Jane Campion while Oliver Stone was honored with a special lifetime achievement award.
