One of the most popular and beloved Disney animated movies of the 2000s is Lilo & Stitch, and despite being a family-friendly movie, it has a hidden horror connection that most viewers probably dont know about. In 2002, Disney released Lilo & Stitch, an animated sci-fi comedy directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. Lilo & Stitch was a critical and box-office success, and its considered one of the highlights of the studio in its post-Disney Renaissance era. Despite what Hollywood wants us to believe, not every movie ever made needs a sequel. This did not stop the studios from trying their hardest to churn them out, leaving movie fans with only one solution: forget the sequel exists. It’s a useful technique, but, ironically, it doesn’t work on the worst films. We can say to each other, for example, that Highlander II: The Quickening never happened all we want. In our broken, battered souls though, we know it exists. And it sucks so much. The memory endures, like a cinematic kidney stone.

Trying to forget works best on sequels so middling, or cynically shoveled out that there’s not much for our memories to grab on to. If we do remember them, it’s with a befuddled “how the hell did that happen?” or a “they got A-list actors for that?” kind of awe. And then we forget about them again.

Gore Verbinski's blue-soaked, melancholic "The Ring" incited a wave of J-horror stateside upon its release in 2002. A new century always brings new horror rules, and for the early part of this century, those rules mandated imported ghosties with tragic, complex backstories. Unlike most horror remakes, especially J-horror remakes, Verbinski's "The Ring" is arguably stronger than Hideo Nakata's original, no small feat given Nakata's status as one of this generation's premier Japanese horror auteurs. Post-millennium anxiety, digital unease, and swelling domestic discontent coalesced into more than hospitable conditions for "The Ring" to not just succeed, but succeed remarkably. $249 million worldwide isn't bad by any metric.

Hollywood loves nothing more than movie sequels, because they come with ready-made audiences, but they aren't always as popular as the original movie or even remembered at all. If the first installment was widely successful, that can create some very high expectations to live up to, and not every sequel manages it.

Still, many movie studios will choose to make a sequel - even without the original actors or director - in an attempt to cash in on the success of their predecessors. It's a huge risk, and these ventures can end up crashing and burning, creating movie sequels that become critical and financial flops that fall quickly into obscurity.

Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal has finally addressed the very real possibility of making a sequel to the 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko, which helped his star rise rapidly to the A-list.

Earlier in the year, the time-traveling head-scratcher of a film's director Richard Kelly had been touring a brand new 4K restoration of Darko when he made some rather surprising comments about revisiting the mind-bending universe, causing a lot of fans to respond with some extremely vocal mixed reactions.

"I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe," Kelly told HMV at the time. "It’s...

Some people loved it, some people hated it, but Donnie Darko was definitely a movie that captivated audiences both with Jake Gyllenhaal and his sister Maggie's performance, and the fact that the movie was left open to interpretation. It is rare that an open-ended movie becomes this big of a cult hit, but Donnie Darko did just that and fans still wonder today if they got it right about the entire movie being a parallel universe set up to create the wrongs of the primary universe, or if it was simply just a mind f%@k.

We may get to learn the actual truth in the upcoming years as director Richard Kelly is questioned about the reissue (4k in some places of the world) that would disregard the almost unseen S. Darko (a failed offshoot). He is asked by HMV if we could return to the Donnie Darko world in a sequel.

Richard Kelly is an interesting filmmaker, who has made some fascinating films in his career. His best work is still Donnie Darko, which was a mind-bending sci-fi story that blew my mind when I first saw it. I love this movie, and it looks like Kelly is planning to return to that world for a new sequel that he's developing. Don't worry about that S. Darko piece of crap film, that doesn't count.

The world of Richard Kelly‘s cult classic sci-fi mind-bender Donnie Darko — which we named one of the top 50 sci-fi films of the 21st century — has had a 16-year rest period. So fans truly committed to Sparkle Motion should rejoice at the news that Kelly has plans to put his “stupid man-suit” back on for something, “much bigger and more ambitious” set in the world of Donnie Darko. Cult favourite Donnie Darko has held up well since its release in 2001. The time travel flick was an unexpected minor hit with moviegoers around the world, especially on home release, and launched the career of Jake Gyllenhaal into the stratosphere.

15 years after the release of Richard Kelly’s beguiling original, the director has announced that he has plans for a follow-up to Donnie Darko, and he’s promising “something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe.”

Though there’s nothing official in the works at this point, Kelly seemed pretty confident that he’ll be able to get something off the ground (eventually) during an interview with HMV to promote a 4K restoration of the first film that was just released on Blu-ray:

Richard Kelly isn’t done with “Donnie Darko.” 15 years after his cult classic first arrived in theaters, the writer/director says he thinks there’s “something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe” — not that anything is official at this point. In the history of indie film, sequels haven’t been very common. If we exclude horror movies, that is. And now documentaries. There’s Clerks II, S. Darko, John Duigan’s Flirting, Wayne Wang’s Blue in the Face, Lars von Trier’s Manderlay, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? and I guess The Road Warrior (and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome). There tend to be weird circumstances and technicalities for a lot of them, too. One of the purest examples of an indie sequel is, of course, Before Midnight, which is even rarer for being a third part. It’s possibly the most beloved and critically acclaimed film of the year, and it could very well lead a new wave of follow ups to indie favorites and cult classics that aren’t necessarily easily banked genre flicks. Bless you, direct-to-dvd industry, for churning out endlessly amusing extensions of movies that never should have been franchises in the first place.
