Stephen Gaghan's 2020 film "Dolittle," based on Hugh Lofting's "Doctor Dolittle" novels published in the 1920s and 1930s, was notable in that it was Robert Downey Jr.'s first major acting job in five years that wasn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Downey's five previous credits were for Avengers movies, wherein he played the inimitable Iron Man. The MCU, as well as Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" movies, made Downey a wealthy worldwide superstar and a widely recognized household name. His 2010s fame, however, didn't seem to lead to other notable acting gigs. In 2009, Downey appeared in "The Soloist," and 2010 saw the release of the road comedy "Due Date," but neither of those were huge smashes. Downey starred in and produced "The Judge" in 2014, but that film attracted more attention for his co-star Robert Duvall than for his own performance.
In 2020, when "Dolittle" was released, it seemed to many that Downey was adrift.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for Joker: Folie à Deux
Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux has not been a worthy successor to its 2019 masterpiece of an original. The Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga starrer continues the journey of Arthur Fleck as he is put on trial for his antics in 2019’s Joker by Harvey Dent. But Gaga’s Harleen Quinzel is there to share in his delusions. And, it’s a musical.
While the film has received mixed to negative responses and a lackluster opening weekend, Phillips’ comments on one deleted scene from the film have rubbed fans the wrong way. When asked why a scene showing Gaga kissing a woman at the courthouse was deleted, Phillips reportedly said that it was improvised and it came in the way of the moment.

To the joy of Batman fans who absolutely hate Batman, this weekend we’re getting a sequel to 2019’s Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime Incels, and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. The first movie made over a billion dollars at the box office, but from the sounds of it, Joker: Folie à Deux (not to be confused with Hot Shots! Part Deux), won’t come close to that.
A big reason why the movie’s box office take is expected to be so paltry is that this movie is a musical, and likely won’t appeal to viewers who loved the “Scorsese karaoke cover” vibe of the original.
This baffling, possibly self-defeating take on the material isn’t all that surprising if you’re familiar with the work of Todd Phillips, a guy who began his career with a documentary that was funded through the...

"I called my agent and said 'Why don't they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains?'" That's how Joaquin Phoenix's journey with "Joker" began, per a 2018 interview with Collider. At the time it was a novel idea. Can these comic book characters be used as serious character studies, rather than big-budget blockbuster fare?
Several years before the R-rated DC Comics origin story for Batman's greatest foe came to be, Phoenix merely mused about wanting such a thing to exist. At the time, he didn't think Joker was on the table. Warner Bros. thought differently of it and,...

Every agreeably great director seems to have a distinct style, a personal voice, a kind of film that only they could make right. Do it long enough and online film enthusiasts will add the hallowed suffix “-esque” to the director’s name in a feeble attempt to define what makes their films so good. Until 2019, for Todd Philips this personal style came in the form of slapstick, yet astoundingly successful, road-trip comedies like “The Hangover” and “Due Date.

It is quite clear that Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Todd Phillips as the director of Joker can never be replaced. From the inception of the MCU to the inception of Arthur Fleck’s journey as the Joker, both men have given a lot to their projects.

A certain level of respect is achieved when they both meet or talk about the other and in a recent interview, Downey Jr. had quite a lot to say about the man who directed Joker.

Phillips, known for his comedic movies and obscene situations in films, found worldwide fame when he directed the 2009 film The Hangover. Turning it into a franchise, Phillips worked on The Hangover Part II and Part III.

Back in 2022, it was reported that Jamie Foxx’s directorial debut, All-Star Weekend, was shelved and the reason has pointed to the controversial casting of Robert Downey Jr. in a role that has only been described as “Mexican.” Foxx and Downey Jr. have collaborated in the past and Foxx has been supportive of Downey Jr. when criticisms surface of his satirical role in Tropic Thunder when he appears in black face. Foxx spoke of the shelving, “It’s been tough…with the lay of the land of comedy…We’re trying to break open those sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again.”
While Foxx has moved on to other projects, this past week, he has taken to his YouTube channel to “leak” a trailer for All-Star Weekend. His strategy brings to mind when Ryan Reynolds spent years trying to get a Deadpool movie off the ground and it...

Scott Budnick was riding what could easily have been the height of any other producer’s career when he took a step back from Hollywood.
As EVP of Todd Phillips’ Green Hat Films over 14 years, Budnick produced comedy juggernauts like “Old School,” “Due Date” and the record-breaking “The Hangover” trilogy, which grossed more than $1.4 billion. But he bowed out to pursue activist aspirations in judicial system and social justice reform full-time, founding the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (Arc) in 2014 in an effort to provide assistance and stability to formerly incarcerated men and women.
Budnick returned to Hollywood in 2018 as founder and CEO of 1Community, a mission-oriented producing and cofinancing company for film and TV that embraces the power of storytelling to drive the same reform he’s advocated for for the better part of 20 years. The idea to marry the two passions and create “entertainment with impact,” he told TheWrap, came in part thanks to Tobey Maguire.

It’s hard to think of an actor managing his career after leaving a franchise better than has Robert Downey Jr. And that makes his announced return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — in which he’ll be playing the villainous character Dr. Doom in forthcoming “Avengers” sequels, as announced this weekend — come as a surprise.
Downey’s “Iron Man” kicked off of the MCU in 2008, and his character Tony Stark’s death, in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” was a climax of sorts. “Endgame” represented a culmination of all Marvel storytelling to that point: Downey’s definitive departure meant that this particular set of stories, in which wisecracking defense contractor sat at the emotional center, was done.
What immediately followed his departure was a major hiccup, with his film “Dolittle” bombing critically and commercially in early 2020. It was an attempted franchise-starter, and a cynical one: Downey has said since that he was...

With a mission wholly unique at the time, make money while inspiring social change through entertainment, Participant Media managed to rewrite the rules of Hollywood during its all too short 20-year run. The studio singlehandedly proved to the world that you can produce unbelievably great films that have an impact, and audiences will go see them. Most studios and filmmakers working today owe a debt of gratitude to Jeff Skoll and his team of visionaries. That’s why the announcement that the studio will be shutting its doors felt like a gut punch, especially at a time when Hollywood is feeling a bit limp and lifeless.
Amidst the backdrop of faltering democracies, news and information channels that appear polarized, a marathon pandemic, and the proliferation of streaming, entertainment media still stands king as a unifier, capable of bringing together broad swathes of audiences. We always love a good viral marketing campaign, and with Lionsgate gearing up to release The Strangers: Chapter 1 in theaters on May 17, they’re pulling out all the stops this month.
The three masked slashers from the franchise – known as Pinup Girl, Dollface and the Man in the Mask – have been showing up on home security cameras across the country!
Videos and images posted to Tiktok, Twitter, and even Next Door have been documenting the sightings, one of which is a creepy doorbell cam video of a roommate who was allegedly followed home by the masked trio earlier this month. Another video sees them lurking around outside of a gas station, eventually stopping to look directly into the security camera.
The Strangers were also spotted standing outside the Manhattan Criminal Court House, making for “a strange, slightly unsettling scene,” as one Twitter user perfectly described it.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer Looks Like a Direct Remake of the 2008 Home Invasion Horror Movie
The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

If you're anything like us, you can still hear the sound -- that sickening ping that marked the end of Jennifer Coolidge's tenure as the best part of The White Lotus.
Sorry for opening with a spoiler, but hey -- it's been over a year!
In case you managed to successfully block the incident from your memory, Coolidge's lovably ditzy Tanya McQuoid-Hunt dispatched a crew of gangsters who had it out for her -- but then she fatally conked her head while escaping from the yacht where she'd been held captive.
It was arguably the saddest exit from a show that's given us a couple of them so far.
But on the upside, now there's room for a whole new slate of guests to enjoy a stay at our favorite chain of fictitious luxury resorts!
And based on this week's casting announcement, it sounds like we're in for another round of Emmy-worthy performances.

This morning, Entertainment Weekly has provided us with a first taste of The Strangers Trilogy, previewing director Renny Harlin’s new movies with three first-look images.
“When this opportunity came to me, the idea of not doing a remake or a reboot but doing a trilogy based on the original film, I thought it was an incredible opportunity,” Harlin tells Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive chat. He also notes that the first film, The Strangers: Chapter 1, is similar to the original 2008 movie, while its sequels blaze a new path from there.
The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3, Harlin notes, “explore what happens to the victims of this kind of violence and who the perpetrators are of this kind of violence.

Lionsgate is gearing up to unleash an entire trilogy of new The Strangers movies, and this afternoon we’ve learned that The Strangers Trilogy will be released sometime in 2024.
Additionally, Lionsgate lets us know that a first-look is coming to New York Comic Con in October. The brand new official account over on Twitter tweets, “Shut your window. Lock your door. They are coming. Get your first look of #TheStrangersTrilogy at Nycc with director Renny Harlin and producer Courtney Solomon on October 12th at 3pm.”
We have no idea what the release strategy is going to end up being for these three movies, but it’s interesting that they’re being packaged together as “The Strangers Trilogy.” And we assume based on Lionsgate’s tease today that all three movies will be released next year.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it. And check out teaser imagery below…

Director Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) has already wrapped production on not only a remake of the 2008 film The Strangers (watch it Here), but an entire remake trilogy. Well, the official announcement referred to this as a remake project, anyway. But that might not actually be the case. During a recent interview with CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman, cast member Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) said the trilogy is set “in the same universe” as The Strangers and its follow-up The Strangers: Prey at Night. Which leaves fans to wonder if this is actually a sequel trilogy…
The new Strangers trilogy was filmed in Slovakia. Horvath was joined in the cast by Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer), Rachel Shenton (All Creatures Great and Small), and Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy). The first entry in the trilogy centers on Petsch...

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

The live-action movie follows the hit 2002 animated family film, which grossed 273 million at the global box office. Written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, “Lilo & Stitch” centers on 6-year-old Lilo and her teenage sister Nani, who live in Hawaii and adopt an adorable — though sometimes a little destructive — blue extraterrestrial creature nicknamed Stitch. While the movie featured catchy songs, like “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride,” it also introduced audiences to the concept of ohana, which means family — and as Stitch instills in the group,...

Zach Galifianakis has closed a deal to star in Lilo & Stitch, Disney’s live-action remake of its cult 2002 animated movie.
Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the feature that is intended to be a major release on Disney+.
The Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bonded over a shared sense of family and win the day.
Details of Galifianakis’ role are being kept in the dog pound.
The studio is conducting a wide search for the actors to play Lilo and her older sister. Stitch, naturally, will be a CG confection.
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script for the adaptation.

Joker is a movie directed by Todd Phillips starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro and Frances Conroy.
The most awaited movie of the year leads us to a bitter social denouncement in which no one is left standing, that merges satire and flight of fancy. A kick in the mouth for movies about super heroes and the industry.
Joker is the movie of the year, no matter what they say, and mentioning Joaquin Phoenix as an Oscar winner is no longer a pipe dream nor is this movie a clear-cut candidate for the award that, I am afraid, will not receive it.
Storyline Joker (2019)
Arthur Fleck is a comedian (a clown) with a disreputable life that leads him to madness…(maybe not so much). He is considerably pissed off with society and will make someone pay.
About the Movie
Very, very good. Crude, cruel, an uncomfortable fusion of extremes that we love.

Director Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) recently wrapped production on not only a remake of the 2008 film The Strangers (watch it Here), but an entire remake trilogy. While we’re still waiting to hear what sort of release strategy Lionsgate has in mind for these three new Strangers movies, Collider was able to talk to star Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) about the trilogy – and Petsch promised that these Strangers movies will deliver more answers, more mystery, and more scares.
When asked what she would tell The Strangers fans who are skeptical about the remake trilogy, Petsch answered, “I’d like to first tell that person that I too feel that way about the original Strangers. When I got sent the trilogy of scripts, I said, ‘This feels like a behemoth that maybe shouldn’t be touched.’ I really felt that way as well and I...

Part of the reason why "The Strangers" has endured as an effective horror movie is that we've all had that feeling of being home alone at night, yet it still feels like there's something else watching us from the shadows. After 85 minutes of homebound terror, the words "because you were home" make all of the preceding violence sound so hauntingly meaningless. A couple on the rocks is thrust into a harrowing night of survival for no other reason besides that their lights were on.
It wasn't until a decade later that a sequel came to theaters with "The Strangers: Prey at Night," which /Film's Chris Evangelista called a "schlocky slasher showcase." Rather than rehashing the hopelessness of Bryan Bertino's 2008 home invasion thriller, the follow-up from Johannes Roberts saw the human prey actually landing a few blows in against their stalkers, and living to see another day. I truly believe...

Back in September, Lionsgate announced that Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) was directing not only a remake of the 2008 film The Strangers (watch it Here), but an entire remake trilogy. The first installment in this trilogy had already started filming by the time Lionsgate made the announcement, and now Deadline reports that filming has wrapped on all three films. They also revealed that Rachel Shenton (All Creatures Great and Small) has joined the cast.
The Strangers remake trilogy was filmed in Slovakia, with Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) in the lead role. Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer), Gabriel Basso (Hillbilly Elegy), and Ema Horvath (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) are also in the cast. The first entry in the remake trilogy centers on

Rachel Shenton (All Creatures Great and Small) is the newest addition to Lionsgate’s remake of the 2008 horror The Strangers. She joins an ensemble led by Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez which also includes Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath, as previously announced.
The original film released in 2008 starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple contending with a terrifying home invasion, registering as a sleeper hit upon its release and coming to be appreciated in subsequent years as a cult classic.
The new film follows Petsch’s character as she drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Oregon, they’re forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers. How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.
On the film side of things, Prime Video has a handful of interesting options. The latest effort to make Harry Styles a movie star,...
