The Beatles may have triggered the tradition of boy bands in the music industry, but it is John Lennon whose name invokes just a bit more awe and reverence than McCartney, Ringo, or Harrison. Decades after the singer’s tragic assassination, despite a life left incomplete, Lennon continues to impact lives across the planet, weaving threads of idealism among the masses.
With their presence setting off the crowds at every concert and show, the latitude of the band’s influence in the global socio-cultural landscape was unprecedented. Beatlemania became a phenomenon that was felt in the marrows but never capable of being described in words.

Forty years ago, Marty Markowitz was a sad sack. Everything was going wrong for the mild-mannered New Yorker. He was divorced. He was having a hard time coping with the death of his parents. And some members of his relatives didn’t think he had the stuff to run his family’s fabric business. Enter New York-based therapist Ike Herschkopf who first presented himself as Marty’s knight in shining armor. But over the next three decades, their relationship turned dark and twisted as Ike took over Marty’s life and finances and caused major rift in his family.
Three years ago, their dark, twisted and sad story was developed into the popular podcast ‘The Shrink Next Door,’ and last November Apple TV + premiered a new eight-part series starring Will Ferrell as Marty Markowitz and the People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive Paul Rudd as Ike. The two previously appeared together in the “Anchorman” comedies.

In Apple TV+’s upcoming dark comedy The Shrink Next Door, sibling rivalry is unfortunately taken to extremes.
Inspired by true events and based on the podcast of the same name, the series (which premieres this Friday with its first three episodes) stars Will Ferrell as Martin “Marty” Markowitz, a naïve, passive and panic attack-prone man who is grieving the loss of his parents and a split with his girlfriend. But when his younger sister Phyllis (Kathryn Hahn) recommends he see a psychiatrist to help reclaim his life, the relationship between the two men takes an ominous turn, as the charming Dr.

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, as the various streaming services are stocking their libraries with some great new titles this December to keep us going through the festive period. When it comes to Hulu, the Disney-owned platform is adding a few holiday-related movies and TV shows, but is mostly taking the track of stuffing itself full of classic films that the whole family can enjoy.
This includes a bunch of the best James Bond pics ever made, like GoldenEye, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and, the one that kicked it all off, Dr. No. That would be a perfect watch to honor Sean Connery, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Other action movies you might want to check out this December, meanwhile, include The Hurt Locker, The Fifth Element, 2003’s Hulk and the two “Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon” flicks, The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

Sony pictures has decided to move forward with a film entitled Shrink, that will be based on a comic by Rob Liefeld, the comic writer who brought us Deadpool.
This movie will be based on a psychiatrist, Dr. Jessica Powers, whose clientele consists of super heroes. The word is that the film will be based on kind of an Analyze This concept, with a big Deadpool influence. Deadpool has been a hugely successful film franchise for Fox, so it makes sense that they find other projects in the same vein. There’s obviously a huge market out there for this type of movie.
The project was found by producer Adam Fields, who went digging through Sony’s 30 years of archived abandoned development, and saw this project that looked like it could be a huge comic/action success. He knew that with Liefeld’s name attached, this was pretty much a golden gig.

New Zach Braff and Spike Lee films have some wondering why the rich and famous turn to crowd-funding websites like Kickstarter
Crowd-funding sites have helped pay fora new video game console, a customizable watch and a copy of Lionel Richie's head, bringing the dreams of many creative individuals to life. They have also become a resource for creative-types who do not fit the struggling artist mold.
Actor and director Zach Braff and the film-makers behind Veronica Mars raised more than $2m for their respective projects this year. Last Saturday, Spike Lee reached his $1.25m goal to fund a new film. Their success has rankled those who believe it is unfair for celebrities who already have the backing of major studios to ask fans to pay for their projects.

If my predictions come out right, this year’s Sundance will be heavy on the porn thematic. Couple of Sundance editions back Soderbergh pulled out The Girlfriend Experience as the fest’s secret/surprise film and that was when several folks discovered starlet Sasha Grey. This year, we could find James Deen (that is Lohan’s bed-partner in the pic above) make the jump with Paul Schrader’s The Canyons. Schrader has been at the fest twice before with 92′s Light Sleeper and who could forget 98′s Affliction, but this Kickstarter funded item is perhaps part of a new wave of future Sundance entries – trending crowd-sourcing films from established auteurs. Production began in July, post-prod in September and we’ve witnessed a slew of media items since. The Lindsay Lohan vehicle/Bret Easton Ellis (The Informers cracked the fest line-up in 2008) could spill the most ink in Park City and...

1.) Jane Goldman, known for co-writing Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, is in talks to write a live-action version of Pinocchio, which would be directed by Tim Burton and star Robert Downey, Jr. An initial draft of the script was written by Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies"). The Warner Bros. project would star Downey as Geppetto, the woodcarver who creates a Pinocchio. When the puppet goes missing, Geppetto goes on a journey to find him. So while the initial logline sounds just like the classic Disney tale, I'm sure the involved talent will make it anything but. THR 2.) You can take the boys out of the movie industry, but you can't take the movie industry out of the boys.
Author Bret Easton Ellis, director Paul Schrader and producer Braxton Pope have taken it upon themselves to get their movie "The Canyons" made -- through a crowd-funding Kickstarter campaign and without help from the business.
"The Canyons" tells the story of five twenty-somethings on their "quest for power, love, sex and success in 2012 Hollywood," says the Kickstarter page.
"When Paul and Braxton and myself decided to do this film without any industry people, without dealing with a studio, without executives, opening up the internet to cast the film -- it just seemed that Kickstarter was part of this new way of making film, of making content," says Ellis in the video above.
This non-traditional, do-it-yourself mentality is no surprise coming from Hollywood non-conformists Ellis ("American Psycho" and "Less Than Zero...

Another one of my favorite films from Sundance this year has been acquired for distribution. And it's one that really needed a good distributor, too. Variety reports that Wrekin Hill (Hesher, The Flowers of War, Comic-Con: Episode IV doc) has acquired Mark Webber's The End of Love, his film starring Mark and his 2-year-old son that he wrote and directed. It's a raw, but intimate and captivating look at a relationship between a baby boy and his father, and I highly suggest seeing it when it comes out. Which, the good news is, this film will get a day-and-date theatrical and VOD release this year, so everyone will be able to watch it. Mark Webber's The End of Love premiered at Sundance 2012 and stars Webber (who you might recognize from Scott Pilgrim, Shrink or The Lie), Shannyn Sossamon, even Michael Cera briefly, but primarily his 2-year-old son, Isaac Love.

One of my favorite late-fest discoveries at Sundance 2012 was The End of Love, a film directed/written by, and starring, Mark Webber and his 2-year-old son. It's a beautiful film about a single father trying to raise a son, and the way Webber captures the connection and dialogue he has with his real boy is incredible. You may recognize Webber from any number of acting roles, as the "Talent" in Scott Pilgrim, or indies ranging from Explicit Ills to Shrink to Weapons, but he's as talented behind the screen as he is on it. Luckily, Ethan and I were able to meet up with Mark at Sundance for a fantastic interview about making The End of Love. Here's our interview with Mark Webber talking about his excellent Sundance 2012 film The End of Love: (We shot at a cafe at Sundance, our apologies for the background noise and framing -...

Towards the end of last year we heard that director Jonas Pate, the man behind episodes of TV shows like "Battlestar Galactica" and the 2009 festival film Shrink would take on the psychological horror thriller Bait, the second film written by American Psycho and Rules of Attraction author Bret Easton Ellis who made his screenwriting debut with The Informers. However, it looks like there's been a change behind the camera as Heat Vision reports Taxi Driver and Raging Bull writer Paul Schrader is stepping up to direct the film and he'll also work with Ellis on the latest draft of the script. Sounds like quite the collaboration. Schrader is also the writer/director behind the Richard Gere film American Gigolo, and this new film seems to be something different for both he and Ellis. The story follows a young man itching to take his revenge against the wealthy. And what better...

Author Bret Easton Ellis' shark-horror movie Bait is going into production this coming spring in Spain, according to Variety. Ellis, whose books have been adapted into the films Less Than Zero, American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction, and The Informers, wrote the screenplay about "a disturbed woman who holds a group of American students hostage in shark-infested waters."
Yeah, I can do sharks too.
The film will be directed by Jonas Pate, a TV veteran who's also somewhat known for the feature films Shrink from 2009 and Deceiver from 1997. That's right, he had a 12-year hiatus between feature films, but he's got a ton of television credits from that period. Bait will be the second Bret Easton Ellis-written screenplay to be heading into production this spring; we'd previously reported that his screenplay for Downers Grove will also start filming around the same time.

From Hannibal Lecter to Frasier Crane, psychoanalyst Anouchka Grose chooses her 10 favourite celluloid shrinks
The Sopranos (1999-2007)
Dr Melfi (played by Lorraine Bracco) is the shrink most beloved of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Unlike so many of her made-up colleagues, she's consistently kind and professional. At least she was until the penultimate episode, where she ditched Tony after reading a study on the negative impact of therapy on the sociopath. Still, for the most part, she managed to remain a "broad, generic, sympathetic woman", to borrow the words she used to describe herself when Tony suddenly declared his love for her.
Shrink (2010)
Kevin Spacey's new movie sees him playing a compelling celluloid psychologist. He goes into meltdowns on chat shows, "self-medicates" with street drugs, and punches people in the face. While the point of most fictional therapists is to show the public that shrinks are generally flakier than they look,...

The Killer Inside Me (18)
(Michael Winterbottom, 2010, Us/UK) Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Ned Beatty. 109 mins
After Bad Lieutenant, meet Worse Lieutenant. Whereas Nic Cage's corrupt cop was operatically depraved, Affleck's 1950s Texan lawman hides his psychosis beneath a veneer of southern gentility, which is much creepier. He takes out his anger on various women in a few horribly violent scenes that have raised accusations of misogyny (blame Jim Thompson's source material), but the real challenge is whether Affleck and the stylish visuals are enough to hold the attention between these moments.
4.3.2.1 (15)
(Noel Clarke, 2010, UK) Tamsin Egerton, Emma Roberts, Ophelia Lovibond. 117 mins
With its zippy, attention-deficit plotting, quartet of men's-mag-friendly female leads, and servings of sex and violence, Clarke's frothy transatlantic heist movie aims for the unthinking end of the "male interest" market – what a waste.
Brothers Bloom (12A)
(Rian Johnson, 2008, Us) Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, Mark Ruffalo.

Kevin Spacey goes into overdrive and goes over the top as a Tinseltown therapist counselling a string of big star cameo performers, say Catherine Shoard
Fancy spending a couple of hours in the company of Kevin Spacey at his most sweaty and soul-sick, full of bile and grizzle, spliff in mouth, scotch in hand, dead wife's suicide note in mind, forever flaking out next to swimming pools, too lethargic to be endearing or engaging or even interestingly acid. If so, you're in luck; Shrink offers little but. Spacey's spaced-out La therapist takes a sledgehammer to your irony buttons as he dishes out advice to a motley crew of neurotic cliche clients and promotes his latest self-help bestseller, the wryly titled Happiness. Saffron Burrows shows up as a harassed actor, and Robin Williams turns in a frightening cameo as a sex-addict film star ("She makes me harder than Chinese algebra"). Neither,...

This is the review of Shrink, directed by Jonas Pate and starring Kevin Spacey, Joe Nunez, Mark Webber, Keke Palmer, Sierra Aylina McClain, Ada Luz Pla, Saffron Burrows, Jack Huston, Pell James and Mei Melançon. Shrink is a multi-layered story not dissimilar to Robert Altman’s The Player. It’s a modest and charming offering, directed by Jonas Pate. The script and cast strike several notes of genuine emotional depth – not least in its exploration of the deep scars prompted by suicide. There are also flashes of humour – particularly in the budding romance between Jeremy and Daisy.

The Time That Remains (15)
(Elia Suleiman, 2009, UK/Ita/Fra/Bel) Elia Suleiman, Saleh Bakri, Samar Tanus, Shafika Bajjali. 110 mins
As he did in 2002's Divine Intervention, Suleiman fashions Middle East tensions into something resembling a deadpan arthouse sketch show at times, but the stylised comedy is folded into 60 years of family history this time. The first portion is particularly striking, dealing with the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and Suleiman's father's part in it as a Palestinian resistance fighter. As time and relatives move on, the story becomes more reflective and fragmented, but elegant choreography and tender observation hold it together.
Sex And The City 2 (15)
(Michael Patrick King, 2010, Us) Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon. 146 mins
Us-Arab relations get a stiletto in the eye, as the foursome descend on Abu Dhabi in this overlong but doubtless unstoppable sequel, adding Islamophobic cultural challenges to their perpetual relationship/ageing/wardrobe issues.

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong has been talking about bringing a cinematic version of his group's hit album American Idiot to the big screen since before the album was released in 2004. Now it seems those dreamy wishes will become a reality, as Tom Hanks is in discussions to produce a movie version of the musical set to open on Broadway in April.
The last time Hanks and his Playtone production company adapted a Broadway musical for the cinema (2008's "Mamma Mia!"), he ditched the theatrical cast and enlisted Hollywood vets like Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan. Presumably, Playtone would approach American Idiot in a similar way. So who might step into this story about three friends dealing with war, alienation and the numbing effect of American pop culture and consumerism? Let's play casting director!

The DVD is stocked with your regular items: deleted scenes, audio commentary and on-camera interviews with the director Jonas Pate and producer Braxton Pope, along with the music video “Here” by Jackson Browne. Here’s a list of some of the new movie and TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week that we’re looking forward to seeing. Also, there’s some classic, and not-so-classic, movies hitting Blu-ray for the first time this week as well.
Of all the new releases, we’re particularly interested in the Blu-ray versions of movies and TV shows like The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Monsters vs. Aliens, The Guild Seasons 1 & 2, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Life on Mars: The Complete Series. There’s also a new DVD box set that made us laugh out loud in its awesomeness: Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years. Yes, that’s real.
Check them out.

The Dark Crystal ~ Jim Henson (Blu-ray)

Happy DVD release day, people. Hitting stores this week is one of the year's biggest films, the animated film Monsters vs Aliens, plus a number of indie flicks you might have missed including Sam Mendes' Away We Go, Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience starring Sasha Grey, and Shrink starring Kevin Spacey. Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom is also available for rental exclusively at Blockbuster today, but in a strange deal, it will not be available to buy in the U.S. until January (it will be available in Canada next week, however). In terms of TV releases, there are a ton of Fan Favorites collections for classic shows, plus season 4 of How I Met Your Mother, and then there's the massive 70th Anniversary Edition of The Wizard of Oz plus Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal on Blu-ray. Do you plan on picking anything up this week? Monsters vs Aliens [1] (DVD,...

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Edition) Warner Home Video's remastering of the 70-year-old classic The Wizard of Oz is certainly this week's big release, but how many of you are going to be willing to shell out the dollars for the Blu-ray collector's set or perhaps double-dip on a DVD edition considering it was only four years ago when they released a three-disc collector's edition. Warner sent me the two-disc DVD edition for review, but what sense does it make for me to review the DVD edition when the Blu-ray version is the obvious highlight here? Especially considering I already reviewed the 3-disc version? Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced Shrink will be available to own on the 29th September, 2009. Two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, Best Actor in a Leading Role, 1999; The Usual Suspects, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, 1995) stars in Shrink, a sharp-witted and uplifting film about the courage it takes to achieve happiness … even in Hollywood.
Shrink on DVD September 29th.
What happens when the people we count on to hold us together…are barely holding it together themselves?
Jonas Pate’s Shrink is a striking, fast-paced exposé of the “other” Hollywood, featuring folks living outside their comfort zone and the people who put them there. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts).

Sitting here on a Friday night at 10 p.m. eastern, I find myself pleasantly surprised with Lionsgate Home Entertainment-distributed “Shrink,” a story more human and emotionally compelling than I would have expected. Kevin Spacey harbors a buffet of talent that he seems to feast on whenever the appropriate time comes for what he hungers most. We’ve seen the concept of a shrink hooked on drugs before in “The Wackness.” That was Ben Kingsley and the film was impressive itself but a more comedic love story than a human drama such as this. Spacey stars as Henry Carter, a Los Angeles-based psychiatrist providing help for celebs including an aging actress (Safron Burrows) with a cheating, self-centered husband, an insecure and talented young writer (Mark Webber) and a mega agent labeled as been uber-intelligent with equal amounts of complexes to match.

Robin Williams is getting on one knee for "Wedding Banned," a romantic comedy for Touchstone.
The project, being produced by Mandeville's David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, has no director attached. Nicole Rocklin and Blye Faust are also producing.
"Banned" centers on a long-divorced couple who kidnap their daughter on her wedding day to prevent her from making the same mistakes they did. The divorced parents rekindle their relationship as they elude cops and the angry groom.
Jack Amiel and Michael Begler wrote the script.
Kristin Burr is overseeing for Touchstone.
Williams' deal returns him into the studio's fold; he stars opposite John Travolta in this November's comedy "Old Dogs." Other recent credits include the indie movies "Shrink" and "World's Greatest Dad."
Williams is repped by CAA and Mbst Entertainment.

Ashton Kutcher has lots of boring simulated sex with fellow tabloid legend Anne Heche in David Macken zie's "Spread," a witless homage to "Shampoo" and "American Gigolo" that's brain-dead on arrival.

Luckily enough for Huston, however, he has an excellent mentor - Al Pacino. “I worked with Jack on an indie film I’ve been directing,” says Al Pacino of 25-year-old actor Jack Huston, who stars in Salomaybe?, Pacino’s unconventional adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s notorious play Salome. Huston’s film resume, aside from Salomaybe? and Outlander, includes The Garden Of Eden, Boogie Woogie, Shrink, Shrooms, Factory Girl, Neighborhood Watch, and forthcoming Mr. Nice. ill-fated ex-fiance of Rosalie (portrayed by Nikki Reed) in this, one of the darker portions of the Twilight series. Huston has suggested an appreciation for this type of film, though. Said he in an interview, “I love certain horror movies, the ones that dare to do something original, that take risks. ‘The Shining’, ‘Psycho’, ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, The original Japanese version of ‘The Ring’ to name a few of my favourites.” His...

Don't look now, but there's been another "Eclipse" casting announcement. The newcomer is Jack Huston, who appeared in the recently released "Shrink" and starred in the oddball 2007 horror flick "Shrooms." Guess what that one's about. The actor follows Bryce Dallas Howard and Jodelle Ferland as the latest addition to the "Twilight" world.
Huston will play Royce King II, a human who lived during the Great Depression, according to The Hollywood Reporter. King has a bit of a history with Rosalie Hale (Nikki Reed), which I won't spoil here for those two or three of you interested readers who haven't read the book. Let's just say that things don't end particularly well for Mr. King, but at least he had it coming.

The Hollywood Reporter has recently announced the news that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse's cast will include Jack Huston as Royce King, II. Huston joins a growing line-up of Twilight series newcomers for the third film, including Xavier Samuel, Bryce Dallas Howard, and the one and only Jodelle Ferland. Huston is a relatively new actor, with about five years of experience, but he is of blue blood in Hollywood, and has already made a name for himself amongst the greats. His grandfather is double Oscar-winner John Huston, legendary director of nearly 50 films (including The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre, The Maltese Falcon, Casino Royale, Freud, The Unforgiven, Moby Dick, Moulin Rouge) and actor in over film films (including Chinatown, The Hobbit, De Sade, and A Walk With Love And Death).
