An excellent short film from Adrian Serecut which captures perfectly the look and atmosphere of Communist Romania in the 1980s. The interiors, the clothes, the concrete apartment blocks, the interrogation rooms and the overwhelming sense of menace and state control take you deep into chilling recent history. The Smuggler tells a powerful story of faith, commitment, courage and sacrifice and the heavy price that people often have to pay to stay true to their beliefs. The key members of the cast are quietly impressive, as is the entire production.

This award winning short film captures the danger and cost of standing against the Communist regime for another belief. It captures perfectly the implications of how one person's choice to follow their convictions affects others. This film has a wonderful music score which builds atmosphere and sets the pacing well. Brilliantly acted. Adrian Serecut is a gifted filmmaker and I look forward to seeing his career develop.

A credible look into the Communist Eastern Europe, at a time when some people were doing more than just survive from day to day; they were having a(nother kind of) fight for others' sake. There are a lot of moments you are taken by surprise - in a good way - and feel the suspense. The tension moments are wisely created in order to keep you watching and searching for the development. Another fine technique is suggestion over explicit detail; the viewer will be given hints regarding the denouement and then left to make the connections by themselves.
The actors know their way and you are transported into their reality right from the start. This is what really happened and it is great to have it turned into a movie!
