The Pink Panther to me is one of animation's most iconic characters. DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
A vast majority of the previous Pink Panther cartoons are very good and more. The best of them being classics, 'The Pink Phink' and 'The Pink Tail Fly' immediately springing to me. 'Smile Pretty Say Pink' is to me one of the series' best and funniest. If anybody has never seen this or a Pink Panther cartoon, and is doubting DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' appeal from watching Crazylegs Crane or Tijuana Toads, 'Smile Pretty Say Pink' is a good example of why the studio shouldn't be met with too much scorn.
Everything works wonderfully. Maybe the ending is a tad predictable, but because it was also funny it is easy to overlook. 'Smile Pretty, Say Pink' to me is one of The Pink Panther funniest cartoons. The premise is a very simple set-up and much of the humour revolves around Pinky and his foil (the cameraman this time around) outsmarting one another, but when the humour is good the simplicity and routineness works.
It certainly worked in 'Smile Pretty, Say Pink', there are a lot of gags here and they all worked, the best being Pink lighting up every time he hiccoughs. Pink is still the cool and likable character as he always is, and the scenario doesn't undermine him in any way. The cameraman is a good foil, working very well with Pinky, and the outsmarting between the two is funny to watch.
Furthermore, the animation is elegant and well drawn, not too busy, not simplistic and not too sparse, it is just right. The music, from the incidental music to the iconic theme tune, are as energetic and infectious as they can be.
Overall, so much fun and one of my personal favourites from The Pink Panther. 10/10.
