Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney's new Channel 4 sitcom Catastrophe is a deeply funny, down-to-earth look at relationships...
Sick of honey-sweet TV portrayals of relationships and hackneyed sitcom clichés about the drudgery of marriage, Sharon Horan (Pulling, Dead Boss, Free Agents) and stand-up Rob Delaney (Burning Love, Larry King, basically the king of Twitter) wrote and star in Catastrophe. It’s a deeply funny, down-to-earth story of two people whose strings-free hook-up is fast-tracked due to an unplanned pregnancy, and their attempts to stay their accelerated course.
Deftly balancing sharp humour with naturalistic performances and genuine warmth spiked by the odd disgusting moment, Catastrophe is a solid addition to Channel 4’s comedy line-up. We chatted to writer/actors Horgan and Delaney about avoiding schmaltz, working with Carrie Fisher, the influence of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, and discover that Rob Delaney can’t pronounce the word ‘treacle’…

What have Matthew Holness, Richard Ayoade, Alice Lowe and Matt Berry been up to in the decade since Garth Marenghi's Darkplace?
It’s been ten years now since author, visionary, and dreamweaver Garth Marenghi’s legendary horror TV show, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, was rescued from a vault in Peru and broadcast to a largely unappreciative audience.
Or, you know, in the reality we actually inhabit, it’s been ten years since a group of comedians donned 80s costumes and pretended to be aging filmmakers commenting on their own ‘lost’ series. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace was a perfect send-up of both trashy low-budget horror and science fiction productions and pompous creators, as a bewigged Matthew Holness straight-facedly explained the unique genius of his horror writing alter ego even as his greatest creation, Dr Rick Dagless M.D., mugged away in the background.

With the film already released last month in the United Kingdom, we've already seen a couple trailers from across the pond for the comedy Cuban Fury starring Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz co-star Nick Frost. Now the film is poised to hit the United States this spring, and the surprisingly R-rated comedy has just unveiled its first domestic trailer. It still looks a little too slapsticky, but we're hoping the combination of Frost facing off with the hilarious Chris O'Dowd, as they each fight for the affection of the lovely Rashida Jones will be enough to make it enjoyable. Can Frost find success without Simon Pegg around? Watch it! Here's the first Us trailer for Jon Brown's Cuban Fury, originally from Yahoo: Cuban Fury is written by Jon Brown ("Misfits"), from an original idea by Nick Frost, and marks the feature film directorial debut of James Griffiths...

Back in July, a cool featurette gave us a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the comedy Cuban Fury starring Nick Frost, Chris O'Dowd and Rashida Jones. The film follows a down-on-his-luck man (Frost) who reignites his long-dormant passion for salsa dancing, crushed by a rival dancer (O'Dowd), due to a new love for his American boss (Jones). Now we have some first look photos from the American Film Market thanks to Collider. Sadly, there's no shots of Ian McShane as Frost's dance instructor, but there's a great shot of Frost in full Cuban dance garb and also tossing around O'Dowd in a parking lot, maybe in a dance fight? Here are the first photos from James Griffiths' Cuban Fury from Collider: Cuban Fury is written by Jon Brown ("Misfits"), from an original idea by Nick Frost, and marks the feature film directorial debut of James Griffiths ("Up All Night" and "Free Agents...

Chicago – Life really does imitate fiction, especially when the fiction is so clearly inspired by reality. While Showtime’s very funny “Episodes” is an exaggerated version of the chaos, infidelity, backstabbing, and general stupidity that goes down behind the scenes of a network TV show, one need look no further to prove the statement than the fact that “Episodes” star Stephen Mangan watched as his British hit “Free Agents” was turned into the first casualty of the Fall 2011 season in the States. Sometimes things just don’t make the trip across the pond.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
And this is the focus of season two of “Episodes” as Mangan’s writer Sean Lincoln and his wife Beverly (Tamsin Greig) watch as their program “Pucks!” with Matt LeBlanc (who brilliantly plays himself) gets destroyed in the ratings by a show with a talking dog. While the first season of “Episodes” was about the...

One of the biggest compliments one could give to the Apatow-era of comedy is the development of talent, often very young and unheralded, from all around the world. Take, for instance, the international ensemble for "Bridesmaids" which featured Americans (Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper), Brits (Matt Lucas, Chris O'Dowd) and Australians (Rose Byrne, Rebel Wilson) side-by-side.
It's something we're seeing reflected in casts more regularly nowadays with Rashida Jones following the trend, heading to the U.K. to star in the dance-comedy "Cuban Fury" along with acclaimed "Tyrannosaur" star Olivia Colman. The two will star opposite Nick Frost and Chris O'Dowd for the tale of a down-on-his-luck man (Frost) who reignites his long-dormant passion for salsa dancing after falling for his gorgeous American boss (Jones). Based on an idea by Frost, lensing begins in seven weeks with Big Talk Film, Studiocanal and Film4 backing what will be the directorial debut of James Griffiths ("Up All Night,...

Two series on the opposite ends of their runs had premieres last night — rookie NBC comedy Are You There, Chelsea and departing CW drama One Tree Hill. The series debut of Chelsea (2.3/6 in adults 18-49, 6.4 million total viewers) did far better than the premiere of NBC’s fall comedy in the Wednesday 8:30 Pm slot, Free Agents (1.3/4, 3.9 million), and posted the network’s best 18-49 result in the time period this season. Chelsea also built onto its lead-in, the time-slot premiere of Whitney (2.1/5, 6.1 million), which was down 9% from the debut of Up All Night in the time period in September but up 11% from Whitney‘s most recent Thursday telecast December 8. That is NBC’s best 18-49 result in the Wednesday 8 Pm half-hour since October 19. NBC’s relatively good news extended to the 9 Pm hour, where Harry’s Law (1.4/3, 8.7 million) featuring Erica Durance as Wonder Woman hit a season high in...

NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt has admitted that the network suffered a "really bad" fall season. In the latter half of 2011, the network cancelled new shows including The Playboy Club, Prime Suspect and Free Agents as ratings dropped by 11% to an average of 7.4 million viewers and a 2.5 adult demo. "We had a really bad fall," Greenblatt confessed at a press tour event. "[It was] worse than I had hoped for, but actually about what I expected. "People keep saying the only place we have to go is up - which I think is true, but there's a lot of work to do before we get there. (more)...

Chicago – Here’s the best news for TV fans — there’s reason again to be excited about our favorite distraction. After a few years of lackluster freshman classes, the just-ended year was simply an amazing one — eight out of my top twenty shows of 2011, a whopping forty percent, are new offerings. It’s the best freshman class since the legendary one of 2004 (“Lost,” “Deadwood,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Entourage,” “Veronica Mars”) and my list doesn’t even include pop culture hits like “Once Upon a Time” or “Revenge” or new shows that could easily move up into the elite next year with a bit of tinkering like “Enlightened” or “Shameless.” Even the under-achievers of the class of 2011 have potential.

Community Fans: Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid.
While NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt was quick to reinforce the fact that Community has (a) not been canceled, and (b) will return to the air at a date to be determined in the Spring, he was slightly less forthright when asked about the potential of a fourth season. Translation: Fans of Greendale Community College should pretty much expect to hold their breath until the last possible moment (Read: the annual May Upfront) when a decision on the show’s future (or lack thereof) will be made based on NBC’s scheduling needs and pilot development.
“Sexytime” is coming to Svu

The poetic irony of Shakespeare’s phrasing is not lost on Anthony Head. When the Bard wrote that “uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” even he could not have known what was in store for the actor Head’s royal character as the fourth season of Merlin begins tomorrow at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Syfy.
As the new season opens, Head’s character – King Uther – is a mere shadow of himself, mired in bleak despair after realizing that his illegitimate daughter Morgana has arisen to become his greatest enemy, using dark magic to besiege Camelot and its leaders.
The first of a two-part episode, “The Darkest Hour, Part 1” finds Morgana’s blinkered determination threatening not only Arthur’s future, but the very balance of the world. With her magic stronger than ever, the sorceress summons the mighty Callieach (pronounced “kay-lix”) to tear open the veil between the worlds.

Ah, the television midseason. By now, the public has decided which new shows they’ll stick with (Revenge, 2 Broke Girls, New Girl), which they’re unsure about (Pan Am, Prime Suspect, Once Upon a Time) and which aren’t even worth thinking about (The Playboy Club, Free Agents). There’s little chance that if something hasn’t become appointment viewing by now, it’s worth cancelling the DVR season pass. So while we’re all finally getting over the tragedy that was Charlie’s Angels, the network bigwigs are using their highly-representative sample (comprised, one can only imagine, of elderly people, religious zealots, and the entirety of the state of West Virginia) to determine just what they’ll throw at us next. Sure, some of the best shows have been birthed out of a midseason replacement (ahem, Happy Endings, ahem), but the pickings are often more than slim – shows the networks don’t often find strong enough...

While these numbers aren’t a key piece of the puzzle for the broadcast nets when they are setting ad rates and deciding whether to renew a series, they definitely help to tell a story of a program’s true popularity.*

Tim Allen is indeed TV’s last man standing this fall. Allen’s Last Man Standing series, which has received a full-season pickup, is the only one of the 3 new fall comedies centered on guys to still be on the air after ABC today pulled its companion Man Up!. Effective next Tuesday, the network will air reruns of Last Man Standing in the 8:30 Pm slot just like NBC runs repeats of Up All Night at 8:30 Pm on Wednesdays following the cancellation of Free Agents. Today’s move by ABC, which comes on the heels of Man Up! posting another series low on Tuesday, only hastens the exit of the comedy, which had already been canceled after the network opted not to order additional episodes beyond the original 13-episode order and left the series out of its midseason schedule. It is reminiscent of the early pullout of the other new “guy” series,...

Chicago – Fox’s “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” is so horrendous that there were rumors, after it was picked up by the network and pilots were sent out to press last May, that the network heads might change their mind and decide not to air the show at all. That would have been the nice to do to the American public. An easy choice for the worst new show of the year (especially now that contenders “Free Agents” and “How to Be a Gentleman” have been axed), this offensively bad sitcom should be canceled before Christmas if Santa gets my wish list.

So long, Maria Bello: You were good while you lasted. Production on NBC’s Prime Suspect will shut down after the 13th episode, which is currently filming in New York. The network just announced its new midseason lineup and the cop drama is not on it.
Another remake, The Firm, will bow in its place.
The series, while appreciated by critics, was not embraced by viewers: The remake only averaged a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.1 million viewers. Since NBC already canceled Playboy and Free Agents, NBC clearly wanted to keep its options open on Prime Suspect before deciding...

This season saw a ton of new shows tough it out in primetime. Now that it’s been a few weeks, we can finally judge which shows succeeded, which bombed, and which need to be put out of their misery.
There were so many new shows, not even I could check them all out. There’s only so much one person can handle! So while many shows will be mentioned here, please share your thoughts.
Revenge: This soapy melodrama is the best new show of the fall tv season. It’s bad things happening to bad people, and with all the economic unrest currently going on in the states, it couldn’t be more perfectly timed. While Emily is among the ridiculously wealthy, the audience gets to see her take down her villianous neighbors one by one. While the formula of a “revenge-a-week” was starting to get too predictable, they...

Earlier today, Lynette “Reaper” Rice and James “Hellfire” Hibberd (sorry, guys!) unleashed the latest, season-to-date numbers for the new shows airing this fall in their weekly Death Watch report. Some of the bottom feeders were already given full season pickups (Ringer, Hart of Dixie), but others are teetering dangerously on the edge of cancellation.
So, PopWatchers — who will be next to go? We’ve already seen The Playboy Club, Charlie’s Angels, How To Be A Gentleman, and Free Agents bite the dust, but the next picks may not be so easy. Will it be Maria Bello’s sadly underwatched Prime Suspect,...

Updated: So far, so predictable: All the shows that have been pink-slipped were pretty much expected. (Across the nation, scores of TV critics are crowing “we told you so!”) Now comes the really tough decisions: Some new (and old) shows are still posting ratings south of a 2.0 rating (here’s looking at you, Prime Suspect), but at what point does a network start to hit bone when it makes so many painful cuts?
Let’s look at the latest, season-to-date averages in adults 18-49, the demographic of most concern to advertisers. (Note: We’ve included the averages for the shows...

We're mere weeks into the new TV season, and already the freshman class has provided some bona fide hits (hello, girls both New and 2 Broke!) But while some shows started strong, several others faltered out of the gate (Rip, The Playboy Club, Free Agents, How to Be a Gentleman and Charlie's Angels!) Which shows will be next? These 11 are in the most danger, due to low ratings, poor performances among younger viewers and other typical bad signs. Is your favorite show on the list?

Former Lost Other Hiroyuki Sanada gets Revenge
He was once an Other on ABC’s infamous series Lost, and now he’s out seeking revenge. No, I don’t mean literal revenge. Although Hiroyuki Sanada should have considered that option after Sayid murdered his character, Dogen, so unceremoniously. That was such a waste of an interesting character! But I digress. Sanada has been tapped to play a recurring role on ABC’s new series, Revenge.
EW.com reports Sanada will play a mysterious Japanese businessman with ties to Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp). He makes his first appearance in episode 9 and hopefully doesn’t find himself drowned in an ancient temple again. In order to keep his mysterious nature, there isn’t much that can be said about who this businessman is. Guess work is rather futile as this is such a new series and one I’m not entirely familiar with,...

Here's the Ratings Five-Spot for the week ending October 16, 2011:
The Walking Dead - This is another one of those cases where just saying "great ratings" doesn't seem like enough. AMC's zombie drama returned with over 7 million viewers and a whooping 3.8 adults 18-49 rating on Sunday. How big is that?As AMC's press release touted, it's the biggest 18-49 drama performance in basic cable history. The best thing you can usually say about a cable program is that it's a "broadcast-sized hit," but this show may even be bigger than that. For example, three of the big four broadcasters (ABC, Fox, NBC) have a combined three drama episodes this season that did better than Dead in 18-49 (the Glee premiere, the House premiere and the Grey's Anatomy premiere). The biggest drama on NBC this season to date got just a 2.4! And the only drama on TV that's consistently stronger than that 3.8 is NCIS on CBS,...

On Friday, Drew Barrymore's "Charlie's Angels" became the latest television tragedy as ABC canceled the heavily promoted, but not-very-well-received drama.
Despite a slew of hot, nubile young actresses (like Minka Kelly) and a Miami twist, the show -- a reboot of the 1970s classic -- didn't get the pulses of America racing.
"Charlie's Angels" has joined a rapidly growing list of Fall 2011 shows which were canned by their networks, including CBS comedy "How To Be A Gentleman" (with Kevin Dillon), The CW reality show "H8R," NBC's remake of the British comedy of the same name, "Free Agents" ...

Chicago – Well, that didn’t take long. Joining “The Playboy Club,” “Free Agents,” and “How to Be a Gentleman” in the hallowed halls of cancellation is ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels,” a show that never found an audience and watched the few who did sample it turn away in the week’s after its premiere. ABC followed their full-season orders for “Revenge” and “Suburgatory” yesterday with the announcement of the cancellation of “Charlie’s Angels” today.
What’s next? Keep an eye on “Pan Am” and “Prime Suspect.” As for what you don’t have to worry about, nine rookie shows have already been renewed — “Up All Night,” “Whitney,” “New Girl,” “2 Broke Girls,” “Ringer,” “The Secret Circle,” “Hart of Dixie,” “Revenge,” and “Suburgatory.”
Maybe this will finally put an end to the remake/reboot trend with “Charlie’s Angels” not making it to Halloween and “Wonder Woman” notoriously not even...

ABC has canceled "Charlie's Angels," the network announced Friday.
The network axed the series after just four episodes due to low ratings.
The cancellation is one of the first few of the new television season, after "The Playboy Club" and "Free Agents" among others, and the first made by ABC.
The show, which starred Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor, was a remake of the popular 1970s series with a slight twist. It aired on Thursdays at 8 p.m., where it went against CBS' "Big Bang Theory" and NBC's "Community."

With baseball games on Fox and TBS, the other broadcast networks faced rather atypical competition but survived mostly unscathed. Most series were flat or very close to their levels from last week, with four exceptions. On the plus side, ABC’s sophomore Happy Endings (3.3/8 in adults 18-49), which featured Megan Mullally as a guest star, grew 14% from its fast national number last week, while its lead-in, Modern Family, was virtually unchanged. ABC’s gains carried over to the 10 Pm hour where Revenge (2.7/7, 7.9 million viewers) was up 8% from its 18-49 fast national last week. (Both series were adjusted in the finals.) In the negative column, NBC’s rookie Up All Night (2.0/6) was down 9% from last week’s fast national, while CBS’ veteran CSI (2.6/7, 10.8 million) was down 10% to a season low and slipped to second place in the 10 Pm hour among 18-49 behind ABC’s Revenge. CSI still topped the time period in total viewers.

ABC's new series "Last Man Standing" premiered to strong ratings Tuesday night (Oct. 11), with 13.2 million people tuning into Tim Allen's return to sitcomdom.
That the former star of a hit comedy ("Home Improvement," in this case) would draw a big audience in his return is maybe not a surprise. Except that when you look at the track record of some of Allen's contemporaries in recent years, it sort of is.
Consider: "Back to You" and "Hank," both of which starred multiple Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer (the former also featured fellow Emmy winner Patricia Heaton), couldn't make it past their first seasons. Ditto for Matthew Perry ("Mr. Sunshine"), Paul Reiser ("The Paul Reiser Show") and Jenna Elfman ("Accidentally on Purpose"), all of whom starred in hit shows in the 1990s and early 2000s and had one-and-done shows in the past couple of seasons.

NBC is solidifying its support for well-received but struggling new drama Prime Suspect with a six-script order. It follows similar script pickup for sophomore dramedy Harry’s Law yesterday. Prime Suspect is NBC’s only new fall scripted series whose fate has not been determined. The network recently gave comedies Up All Night and Whitney full-season orders and canceled drama The Playboy Club and comedy Free Agents. Such a script order allows producers to keep a series in continuous production if the network gives it an episodic back order. After a slow start, Prime Suspect held steady last Thursday (1.5/4), when virtually all other shows were down. The cop drama starring Maria Bello is getting additional sampling on Monday where its repeats replaced Playboy this week.

NBC’s new drama Prime Suspect isn’t exactly blowing the roof off the House of Nielsen, but NBC isn’t willing to give up on the Maria Bello starrer just yet. As a sign of confidence for the struggling drama, the network just ordered six more scripts for the Thursday series.
Last week, the drama earned a 1.5 rating/4 share in adults 18-49 and averaged 4.9 million viewers. Though it didn’t increase its ratings, it didn’t lose a point versus the previous week, either. The show may climb in the coming weeks, aided by repeats airing on Monday nights...

Hank Azaria's cancellation suspicions were correct. Last night's episode of Free Agents didn't fare any better in the ratings and NBC has now cancelled the sitcom after four episodes.
