Zack Snyder's scrapped animated show, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, has received a status update from producer Jay Oliva. The franchise began in 2021 with Snyder's post-apocalyptic zombie movie Army of the Dead, which serves as a spiritual sequel to the director's 2004 reimagining of Dawn of the Dead. Army of the Dead featured an ensemble cast, including Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, and Tig Notaro. The movie was a streaming hit for Netflix, and the Lost Vegas prequel show was planned soon after. However, Snyder mentioned that the project had stalled for technical reasons, and there didn't seem to be any change regarding the show's status.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant's Zak Wojnar, at New York Comic Con, Oliva was asked about an update on the status of the series for which he was the showrunner. He revealed that mostly everything was completed before Netflix pulled the plug.

Zack Snyder's "Twilight of the Gods" marks his first TV series in a 20-year career of making almost exclusively movies. The animated show dives into Norse mythology and promises to deliver a violent and sexy experience. Snyder has created animated stories in the past, as two of his previous films feature animated moments.
Director Zack Snyder's newest project, Twilight of the Gods, is set to break a career trend he's had for two full decades. Zack Snyder has been directing movies for 20 years now, and he's accomplished quite a bit in that time. From box office hits like 300 to massive franchises like the DC universe, and specifically his Justice League films, Snyder has proven himself capable of making entertaining movies. Ah, the fall. In the words of the great philosopher Calvin, "Bugs are dying by the truckload! Ha ha ha! Good riddance to 'em all!" We've still a few weeks left of summer on the calendar, but the days are already getting shorter and dead, crunchy leaves have suddenly begun turning up in my backyard. More relevant to this discussion, it's that time of year when Netflix's original slate typically becomes a whole lot more interesting. This is when the streamer starts rolling out the awards season hopefuls it acquired at film festivals earlier in the year, along with some of its more niche genre films and TV series.

Netflix Halts Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ Franchise After a Tough Year - Main Image
According to reports, Netflix has scrapped the planned anime series and the much-awaited expansion of the "Army of the Dead" franchise, both directed by Zack Synder.
In the first few weeks after its debut, "Army of the Dead," a popular action-horror movie on Netflix, attracted over 75 million viewers, ranking it as the ninth most-watched Netflix film ever.
Zack Synder reportedly intended to build a full-fledged universe for the series, and he had grand ambitions for the next movies.
Affected Projects Due to Army of the Dead Franchise Cancelation
The director's adaptation of Army of the Dead depicts a post-apocalyptic world overrun with zombies, whereas the original film, which was released in May 2021, under the same name, follows a gang of survivors as they plot a robbery at a Los Angeles casino. "Army of Thieves,...

Netflix canceled its Army of the Dead franchise plans, which might be for the best. Army of the Dead's runtime hurt the original, thanks to the unnecessary setup for sequels and prequels. Army of Thieves proved the original didn't require a franchise, lacking substance and being quickly forgotten.
It appears Netflix has canceled plans to make Army of the Dead a franchise, which only highlights a big problem with the original Zack Snyder film. The very first Zack Snyder movie was 2004's Dawn of the Dead, a remake of the George A. Romero zombie classic. There was a sense of the director coming full circle with 2021's Army of the Dead, where a team of mercenaries enters into a walled-off, zombie-infested Las Vegas to pull off a heist.
The film was Snyder's follow-up to the infamously troubled Justice League and saw the filmmaker unwinding and having some fun.

Netflix has quietly canceled all follow-ups to Army of the Dead, leaving Zack Snyder's most promising franchise in the dust. Army of the Dead was Snyder's best franchise, compared to his divisive Dceu and unsuccessful Rebel Moon. Now without a franchise, Snyder has the opportunity to pursue passion projects like The Fountainhead or a small-scale film.
Netflix has quietly canceled all development on follow-ups to Army of the Dead and now, the only Zack Snyder franchise with any promising potential is gone. Snyder is one of the most polarizing filmmakers working today, described as everything from a visionary to a hack. The people who like his films really, really like them especially the bloated, indulgent directors cuts but not everyone is charmed by his saturated colors, edgelord characters, and overuse of super slow-motion.
After Snyder parted ways with Warner Bros., Netflix was quick to partner up with him.

In a significant shift, Netflix has quietly shelved plans to expand Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” franchise into a full-fledged cinematic universe, canceling both a anticipated sequel film and animated series spinoff.
The streaming giant had greenlit “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” and “Planet of the Dead” to continue the story of Snyder’s zombie heist thriller, which attracted 75 million households in its first month after debuting in 2021. However, low viewership of the director’s recent Netflix epic “Rebel Moon” has reportedly caused the platform to halt building out the “Army of the Dead” universe.
“Army of the Dead” proved a massive hit for Netflix, with the prequel film “Army of Thieves” also performing well with 72 million viewing hours in its second weekend. But sources say Netflix has lost enthusiasm for Snyder’s ambitious plans after “Rebel Moon” parts 1 and 2 failed to break into the streamer’s Top 10 despite initially high viewing,...

Netflix quietly canceled Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise, despite plans for expansion. The franchise was meant to include prequels, sequels, and a connection to Rebel Moon, Snyder's newest franchise. There may have been several reasons for Army of the Dead's cancelation, from Snyder's plans for Rebel Moon to Army of Thieves' lukewarm reception.
Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise has been canceled by Netflix, despite plans for several new installments and a Rebel Moon connection. Zack Snyder's 2021 zombie apocalypse heist movie Army of the Dead was a fairly big hit. Army of the Dead had a star-studded cast, a popular director, and a novel combination of the zombie and heist movie genres. It had quite a few things going for it, and it seemed to have legs to become a long-running franchise, but those plans have recently been scrapped.

We have some bad news to report, horror fans. It looks like we won't be seeing any more new installments in the Army of the Dead franchise like we had been initially promised. All of the Army of the Dead future films and the animated series have been reportedly quietly canceled. More on this below.
Back in September 2020, months before Army of the Dead had even come out, Netflix had announced that it would be working with Zack Snyder again to make a prequel movie and an animated prequel series. Then, in July 2021, the streaming giant greenlit a direct sequel to Army of the Dead, a film that Snyder was said to start working on after making Rebel Moon.
While the prequel movie Army of Thieves did get made and come out in 2021, the animated series and the live-action sequel haven't. The animated series was officially titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,...

For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel called Planet of the Dead was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his Rebel Moon sci-fi movies – and The Wrap has revealed that Netflix “quietly canceled” plans for an Army of the Dead Universe.
In an article on the Rebel Moon films that features interviews with Snyder and his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder, The Wrap mentions, “Army of the Dead, a movie the Snyders made for Netflix before Rebel Moon, had a similarly ambitious (universe/franchise) plan, with several sequels and spin-offs in the works,...

Seventeen years after remaking George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Zack Snyder returned to the realm of zombie cinema with Netflix’s Army of the Dead in 2021, which was supposed to spawn a prequel movie, a live action sequel, and an animated series. To date, only the spinoff prequel – Army of Thieves – has seen the light of day… and that may remain the case.
A new report from The Wrap seems to indicate that Netflix has pulled the plug on the Army of the Dead Universe, with the sequel movie and the animated series being scrapped.
The planned animated series was titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” and last we heard, Snyder’s live action sequel to Army of the Dead was going to be titled Planet of the Dead.
Both projects, however, may have been buried six feet under.

Netflix has reportedly cancelled Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise, halting future projects that were originally aimed at expanding the series. Plans for the animated spinoff Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and the movie spinoff Planet of the Dead have seemingly been scrapped. The zombie franchise's demise doesn't bode well for Rebel Moon's planned shared universe, which could suffer the same fate if not successful enough.
Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead franchise has been reportedly cancelled at Netflix, with seemingly no plans for the franchise to continue beyond the previously-released films. The post-apocalyptic series centers around the zombie apocalypse, with the original movie of the same name focusing on a group of survivors pulling off a heist in a Los Angeles casino. This initial film was released in May 2021, while a prequel, Army of Thieves, came out in October that same year. While Army of the Dead 2 hadn't been confirmed,...

Zack Snyder made his name with his gruesome, much more action-y remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 2004. The director then tried to line up an even bigger sequel called Army of the Dead for years, but there were many detours along the way, including his eventual role as the chief architect of the early Dceu. He finally returned to his long-lost zombie sequel in 2021, this time as the launching point of a whole new cinematic universe for Netflix, which also included a crime thriller prequel called Army of Thieves and even an animated series about the initial outbreak in Las Vegas.

Army of the Dead doesn't need a director's cut because Netflix was "cool" with Zack Snyder's vision and didn't ask for major changes. Despite not having a director's cut, Snyder was able to include all of his content in the original Army of the Dead film aside from one scene. Snyder is still expanding the universe of Army of the Dead with upcoming projects, including the film Rebel Moon and a potential sequel.
Zack Snyder says that there will never be a director’s cut of Army of the Dead. Zack Snyder's sci-fi film "Rebel Moon: Part One -- A Child of Fire" -- to cite its full title -- is due for release on December 15, 2023, and, like all of Snyder's films, promises to be visually complex and cinematically overblown. Snyder loves a certain kind of hazy photography as well as bold, brassy characters, usually living within an action-packed milieu that allows them to deliver profound-sounding platitudes in bedroom-voiced monologues while slashing people open in slow-motion. "Rebel Moon" will be a sci-fi riff on the "Seven Samurai" story, with a distant-future agrarian moon standing in for a beleaguered 16th-century Japanese village, and an encroaching Empire-like army standing in for Kurosawa's itinerant bandits. Sofia Boutella will play a character who travels the galaxy to gather up a ragtag group of failed warriors to protect her moon from almost-assured destruction.

The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his upcoming Netflix sci-fi film Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (and its follow-up Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver). So Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas sits unfinished… and during an interview with Total Film magazine, Snyder revealed that Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon aren’t entirely separate. In fact, if Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas ever gets completed, we’ll be seeing a Rebel Moon crossover on the show!

Zack Snyder's cancelled TV series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas included a character from his upcoming film Rebel Moon, showing a shared universe. The inclusion of an Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas character in Rebel Moon is surprising, but it makes more sense considering the dimension-expanding elements in the animated show. While it is unclear how much screen time the character will have, it appears to be a small cameo in Rebel Moon, with the possibility of a larger role in future installments.

Zack Snyder’s 2021 zombie movie Army of the Dead was supposed to spawn an animated series titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” you may recall, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep about that project. In a new interview with Total Film that went up today, Snyder suggests that the planned animated series is no longer moving forward at Netflix.
Additionally, Snyder tells Total Film that “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” would’ve revealed that the franchise takes place in the same universe as Snyder’s upcoming Rebel Moon.
“Army of the Dead has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into the movie,” Snyder explains. “There’s actually a character from Rebel Moon in the Army of the Dead animated series that we never did.”
“At one point in the show, they go through a portal into another dimension, and there...

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise has the potential for significant growth, surpassing the expansion of his Army of the Dead series. Rebel Moon has already begun pushing into other media forms, including a tie-in video game that will expand the universe from the movies. The vast world of Rebel Moon, with its diverse characters, fantastical elements, and merchandising potential, presents numerous opportunities for spin-offs, tie-in books, comic books, toys, and more.
Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise has a vast potential to grow in a way that his Army of the Dead series has not yet managed. Snyder's Rebel Moon is divided into two movies, titled Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver. The story centers on Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former soldier for the Mother World's vast army known as the Imperium. When the Imperium threatens to conquer the...

Zack Snyder teases the "twisted" nature of the future Army of the Dead franchise. Snyder plans to continue expanding his zombie-action universe, with a sequel to Army of Thieves and an animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. The first film included Easter egg-level details that set up possibilities for future movies, leaving audiences guessing about the meaning behind these hints and which ones will be paid off.
The twisted Army of the Dead 2 (and beyond) is teased by Zack Snyder. Having departed the world of DC after delivering his clamored-for cut of Justice League, Snyder in recent years has set his sights on establishing his own original cinematic universes. Soon the director will unleash Rebel Moon, a Netflix sci-fi movie that began life as a rejected Star Wars pitch. In addition, Snyder still plans to continue expanding the zombie action universe he kicked off with 2021’s Army of the Dead...

While audiences eagerly await a proper first look at the film, star Cary Elwes is hyping up Zack Snyder's epic Rebel Moon scale. Reuniting Snyder with 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad and Army of the Dead co-scribe Shay Hatten, the sci-fi epic revolves around a young woman who is tasked with traveling the galaxy to find warriors to help protect a peaceful colony from a tyrannical army. Snyder has assembled a star-studded roster for Rebel Moon, including Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins.

A few years ago, Zack Snyder started building the Army of the Dead franchise at the Netflix streaming service. His zombie movie Army of the Dead was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves. An animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works, and Snyder himself was expected to direct the Army of the Dead sequel Planet of the Dead. He was developing the Planet of the Dead script with Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the first film with him… But we haven’t heard anything more about that project in a while, because Snyder has shifted his focus to building another franchise at Netflix. The sci-fi franchise Rebel Moon. Now, in an interview with The Nerd Queens (as reported by Collider), Snyder has confirmed that Planet of the Dead will have to wait until after they know exactly where the Rebel Moon franchise is going.

Rebel Moon star Corey Stoll has nothing but praise for filmmaker Zack Snyder, suggesting that he is an "actor’s director". Scheduled to be released by Netflix in December this year, the story behind Snyder’s Rebel Moon originally began as an idea for a Star Wars film that he once pitched to Lucasfilm. Once intended to be a single movie, Snyder’s expansive concept for the property inevitably led to it being split into two films.
Most recently Stoll, who also appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, spoke with Collider about his work on Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi epic. Suggesting that both the film’s cast and crew “would go to the ends of the earth for him”, he was full of praise for the director’s work ethic, enthusiasm, and approachability. This latest testimonial comes on the heels of similar comments made by Stoll’s fellow Rebel Moon co-star Cleopatra Coleman.

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista teases his new movie project The Cooler from the co-writer of Iron Man 3. Bautista became a star as a professional wrestler, then became a movie star thanks to his dryly funny performance as Drax the Destroyer in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and later MCU films. But Bautista has made it clear that he’s glad to be wrapping up his time as Drax, and no longer wants to be typecast as the big, dumb, weird guy who says strange things.
It’s likely that Bautista never will fully shake off being associated with Drax the Destroyer, but it won’t be for lack of trying. In his ongoing effort to line up projects that challenge him as an actor, and help him shed the Drax image, Bautista just teased an intriguing new project that re-teams him with Hotel Artemis helmer Drew Pearce.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, announced premiere details for a slew of “geeky” shows, as well as returning fan-favorites like “Locke & Key” and “The Umbrella Academy.”
“In my ten years at Netflix, it’s been thrilling to see the dropped jaws, the all-caps tweets/the hilarious memes and the passionate theories inspired by these once-in-a-lifetime moments,” Friedlander wrote in a blog post. “Genre stories have the power to transport us to new universes like the Upside Down in ‘Stranger Things,’ teach us new vocabulary like ‘The Witcher’ and, most importantly, unite us in our shared love of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, anime and everything in between.
