Cosmo Jarvis, star of FX’s smash hit period series “Shōgun,” has landed a role in Guy Ritchie’s next film, “Wife & Dog.”

The Brit joins a heady lineup of names already confirmed for the feature, first announced by Variety last year and set to see Ritchie return to the colourful, backstabbing world of the British upper classes (doubling down on a subject he recently explored in “The Gentleman” film and TV series). Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins have been announced as leading the feature and, while plot details remain under wraps, Jarvis is understood to be to playing Hopkins’ son and Pike’s sister.

The “Wife & Dog” screenplay is written by Ritchie, who also produces alongside long-time producing partner, Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. Executive producers include Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler for Black Bear.

Netflix is boarding a new fantasy adaptation. 2024 has been a big year for the streaming platform. They have been staying afloat while other companies in Hollywood struggle in the wake of the 2023 strikes, during which writers and actors fought for fair pay from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, who took more than 100 days each to resolve the disputes from the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. The streamer has made several moves this year, including password crackdowns, live sports, advertisements at certain tiers, and a change in their content strategy.

This change has included devoting their resources to prioritizing original, high-quality projects as opposed to acquiring the licenses to stream pre-existing movie and television shows. This includes several prominent projects within the fantasy genre, chasing success of titles like Stranger Things and Damsel, both of which number among the most-watched titles of all time on the platform.

Exclusive: In heated competition, Netflix has optioned the rights to Callie Hart’s fantasy romance BookTok phenom novel Quicksilver. Deadline hears this is a 7-figure deal.

One of the all-time best Jane Austen books may be getting a new version on Netflix! Over 200 years after her death, the author is as beloved as ever. Generations have grown up on her novels, which were ahead of their time, exploring issues of feminism, class, and some wonderful romances. In just six books, Austen made herself a literary icon who’s influenced countless writers since.

Not surprisingly, adaptations of Austen’s works have been plentiful. There have even been adaptations of her two posthumous novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion and her unfinished book Sanditon.

Trying to narrow down the best Austen works is difficult as many will cite Sense and Sensibility, which was adapted into a 1995 film directed by Ang Lee and starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, with Thompson also writing the script, earning her an Oscar. Yet, to many, the topper of Austen’s works is Pride and Prejudice.

Netflix is developing a series version of Jane Austens most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice. Published in 1813, the popular novel follows the sharp-witted yet headstrong Elizabeth Bennet, who comes to realize that love can overcome both pride and prejudice through her evolving relationship with the wealthy but initially aloof Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice has been adapted to the screen several times, most famously in the 1995 BBC miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth and the 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

According to Variety, Netflix is developing a series version of Pride and Prejudice with Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton penning the scripts. We are told that Everything I Know About Love creator Dolly Alderton has written the scripts and casting is still yet to be ironed out. If it does get greenlit, Pride and Prejudice will be Netflix’s first Austen adaptation since 2022’s Persuasion, which starred Dakota Johnson.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired rights to “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Hallmark Channel is capping off a month of original films themed around Jane Austen’s works with the premiere of a new feature-length adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. The classic story about whether young women should choose husbands based on romantic notions of love or practicality has been adapted for both television and film several times before. Many fans may remember either the 1995 film adaptation directed by Ang Lee or the 2008 BBC and PBS television miniseries starring Dominic Cooper and Charity Wakefield.

This Sense and Sensibility stands out from the other recent period adaptations of Austen’s works, however, as it’s produced by Hallmark’s Mahogany brand, which is devoted to producing original films and series with Black screenwriters, actors, directors, and other creatives. Unlike Netflix’s 2022 Persuasion adaptation, which used the controversial strategy of “color-blind casting,” Hallmark’s Sense and Sensibility deliberately sought out Black actors for principal and supporting roles.

FX's Shogun has received positive early reviews, holding a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise Shogun for its acting, immersion, and adherence to the source material. Shogun features an acclaimed Japanese cast and a historical storyline relevant to today.

The new historical drama Shogun celebrated its imminent release with a red carpet premiere earlier this week. The “Madame Web” actress and TeaTime producer told L’Officiel that she finds it “really fucking bleak” that executives, especially at streaming services, aren’t willing to to take a risk on smaller budget original movies.

“We made a movie called ‘Daddio’ that was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it took a lot of fighting to get that made,” Johnson said. “People are just so afraid, and I’m like, why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave? It just feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid. That’s what it feels like. Everyone who makes decisions is afraid. Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.

The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

Sony Pictures has unwound the first trailer for its upcoming Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web.

S.J. Clarkson’s feature is part of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters and set to hit theaters Feb. 14, 2024, just in time for Valentine’s Day dates. Dakota Johnson stars in the titular role based on the Marvel comic book character named Cassandra Webb, who is a clairvoyant mutant and can foresee the future for Spider-themed heroes.

Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott round out the cast.

The trailer was released Wednesday and shows Johnson having mysterious encounters with a man from her mother’s past. “I’ve been having visions,” she says in the footage. “If you want to live, you have to trust me.”

Clarkson (Anatomy of a Scandal) directed the film and co-wrote the script with Claire Parker, with the story by Kerem Sanga.

The owner of Sword Coast Couriers has been using pigeons to send the mail, but the pigeons are getting attacked, and their letters have been lost.

The problem comes with actually finding where in Rivington the letters have ended up. If you don't have Speak with Animals, this can prove a frustrating task. At least the rest of the quest isn't so hard; so long as you have Gale on your side, you'll be able to get the letters without a single check.

Having watched Titanic at home in London around the age of six, she says she was so “traumatized” by the film that she couldn’t sleep. After several weeks, her mum had the bright idea to get the film’s director to ring her up so he could explain over the phone to the terrified child that what she’d seen was just a movie, with people wearing costumes on a set. “And I was like, wait, this is a real job that you can do, and you can make people cry,” she recalls. Mubi has acquired British filmmaker Molly Manning Walker’s debut feature How to Have Sex, which is set to debut in Un Certain Regard at the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival.

The streamer has taken all rights for North America, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Latin America, Turkey, and Benelux. Announcing the deal, Mubi said theatrical releases are planned for “key territories,” including the US and UK, while a theatrical release in the Benelux will be hosted in partnership with Imagine Film Distribution. Following theatrical releases, the film will debut on Mubi in all territories acquired.

Prime Video’s epic fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has signed on Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, and Tanya Moodie for season two. The just-announced new cast members will be featured in recurring roles in the upcoming season. Prime Video did not provide any details on who Hinds, Kinnear, or Moodie are playing.

Season two is currently shooting in the UK.
