    A new low

My hopes were raised after the strong showing of the New Years special, but more the fool me.

A BBC production hasn't been this poorly produced in 25 years. Flubbed lines and alternate takes are somehow left in.

That's not to mention the appalling writing that's taken the already abysmal Chibnall norm to a new low.

The Doctor, as the smartest character in any room, is always a source of exposition. That said, when a good writer takes the helm, that exposition will be punched up with some comedy, drama or character work.

Under Chibnall, Whitakker is forced to prattle off whatever incredibly boring exposition he churned out. What's more, it's almost never plot relevant. It's like the writers are aware that The Doctor needs to say clever things but aren't aware there's also meant to be a story happening.

And don't get me started on the Doctor's reactions to things. She seems shocked that a high tech laser sword can cut some old rope. She constantly explains what's going on even when it's something incredibly straightforward.

It's a shame that Whitakker didn't get a chance to really show her chops as The Doctor but thank god this atrocious run is almost at an end. If they can pull out one good episode for the finale later this year it would truly be a miracle.

    Hook, Line & Stinker...

The Sea Devil's in the detail but not on this occasion, this sinking ship has lost its sail great threads have all been unspun, these pirates of the Whoniverse have stolen so much treasure, and what remains cast on the rocks is the opposite of pleasure.

Perpetually we take the bait thrown into poisoned waters, and endure the pain and suffering from someone trying to taunt us, but the albatross around our neck will soon be sent on his way, and the hope is that The Doctor can return and make all our days.

    Lackluster.

To be brutally honest, I quit watching the show some time back, but having had some Easter brandy, I felt like giving it a go. The last episode I watched, features some spiders, some poorly generated spiders, and the first thing I spotted, the cheap and nasty special effects, and this time, Covid cannot be blamed, nor can time constraints.

The Sea Devils, looked rather good, and were perhaps the best element. The sea monster, reminded me of another unfortunate creation, incidentally featuring the last time a sea devil appeared on the show.

My issue, previously, had been the quality of writing, or rather the lack of, and I'm sorry to say, but I saw no real progression, Jodie's Doctor once again seemed to lack any sense of character, and as for those action scenes, no amount of clunky camera work was going to make them look sincere.

The only thing I can think, is that at least watching this, meant that I wasn't forced to look at Simon Cowell's botoxed face.

Four stars is being kind. Most of the poor reviews have good points.

I've liked Jody Whitaker and some of her past works. The Flux was not too bad, but I'm hoping the return to the Old guard will help with things right.

In general I don't blame jody, but it feels like the latest show league has been trying to desperately steer the series in his own direction and sake of his own legacy and has been failing.

This latest episode just felt like something that was thrown together last minute. The effects would give the classic series and run for its money, but by today's standards are really low quality.

This episode I had stiff acting, lines that just seem to be thrown together and action that was poorly directed.

With all of this era's episode spread out so much, it's hard for me to remember everything, but I would say this is definitely one of the low points. I hope Jody gets a chance to redeem herself for the last episode.

    What went wrong

I couldn't tell if the bad script, bad acting or bad editing let this down the most. The story had some potential that would have benefited from a longer running time or been a two parter. Most of the scenes felt like they had been cut short causing to jumps in story telling. The episode seemed to stall and playing catch-up all the time which resulted plot points been lost to the cutting room floor. What was worse about the episode was the weird won't they won't they arc between the Doctor and Yaz. Fingers crossed they can redeem the show with the centenary episode.

    • Trivia
This is only the second Doctor Who Easter special, after Planet of the Dead (2009), 13 years earlier. Unlike Planet of the Dead, no mention is made here of the holiday.
    • Goofs
The story takes place entirely in China (and the surrounding ocean) with a Chinese cast. It has been long established that the TARDIS crew are able to understand languages other than English due to the TARDIS's telepathic circuits acting as a translator, however, the telepathic circuits only remain in contact with a crew member while they're in the same time period. As soon as the TARDIS left 1807, Dan should have been unable to understand the Chinese characters.
