Utopia, Part 3: The World's Largest Shopping Mall (2009)
*** (out of 4)
Mildly interesting documentary taking up to the South China Mall, which is the largest in the world. It was built to make a splash, which it eventually did but sadly for all the wrong reasons. Yes, when the largest shopping mall in the world opened, it was a flop, no one showed up and this documentary gives us a tour of the property. At just 13-minutes the documentary kept me entertained from start to finish but by the time it was over I felt as if I had learned very little and in all honesty the thing left me wanting to know a lot more. Still, those interested in documentary shorts should fine it interesting enough to be worth watching once. I thought it was fascinating hearing a few of the ideas on why people thought it had failed but the most bizarre thing is that there are still a few shops open but just not getting very many customers. It was rather surreal looking at this large building and property but it looks like a ghost town that you'd see from one of those "B" movie Westerns.
