“The Sex Lives of College Girls” is back for Season 3, with some major switch ups to the core four.
While Leighton (Reneé Rapp), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Bela (Amrit Kaur) and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) reunite for sophomore year, their reunion is short-lived as Rapp’s Leighton exits the series mid-season.
Meanwhile, the Max series welcomes two new cast members in Mia Rodgers and Gracie Lawrence, who play new Essex arrivals Taylor — an edgy international student — and Kacey — a transfer student who would rather spend time with her boyfriend than development friendships with Whitney, Bela and Kimberly.
For a full breakdown on which familiar faces you can expect to see in Season 3, as well as newcomers this season, keep on reading.

Director David Gordon Green returns to the world of comedy with Nutcrackers, starring Ben Stiller. Here’s a festive trailer:
For the last few years, director David Gordon Green has spearheaded the revival of John Carpenter’s iconic Halloween franchise, helming 2018’s Halloween, 2021’s Halloween Kills and 2023’s Halloween Ends. It was quite a sharp left turn from the films that made his name, like The Sitter, Your Highness and stoner comedy Pineapple Express. Or his stately dramas like George Washington, All The Real Girls or Joe.
Now, Gordon Green returns to the world of comedy with Nutcrackers, a festive film about a wealthy single chap (Ben Stiller) who reluctantly becomes the surrogate father figure to a highly dysfunctional family.
The synopsis for the movie reads as follows:
Hotshot Chicago real estate developer Michael (Ben Stiller) never had time for family. His sister once said he was incapable of love.

We’re not going to offer any kind of defense of Jonah Hill, who, judging from events that played out on social media last year, may be closer to his This Is the End character than any of us thought. But it turns out that we do have to thank the Superbad star for one thing: He saved one of SNL’s most wonderfully bizarre recurring sketches from the editorial wrath of Lorne Michaels.
This week’s episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast concerned the Digital Short “Andy’s Dad,” in which Hill reveals that he’s been secretly dating Andy Samberg’s father (played by SNL head writer Jim Downey).
The podcast also featured a prolonged voicemail from Hill himself, who discussed not only “Andy’s Dad,” but also “Clancy and Jackie” from the same 2008 episode. That sketch found Will Forte and Kristen Wiig playing country singers Clancy T.

The blood-thirsty hitchhiker, the escaped psycho with a hook for a hand, the babysitter and the call that is somehow unequivocally coming from inside the house; we all known them. The modern day fables that have shaped our fears and behaviours arguably more than any others. Urban legends that all seem to have sprung out of the American post-war hangover of the 1950s and ’60s, as inequality took seed and the dark side of the new white-picket-fence suburbia slowly set in off-screen. Ed Gein and Ted Bundy and the Moors Murders filled the news. Doubts about our fellow man, and about what they’re capable of. About how we very much aren’t “all in this together”; that the days of blindly trusting one another are all but over. That people, strangers in particular, are more likely to be dangerous than helpful.
And naturally, those cautionary tales bled into culture and filmmaking.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival will open with a familiar face: filmmaker David Gordon Green’s latest, the world premiere of his heartfelt comedy “Nutcrackers,” will kick off the festival on September 5. While Green is a regular at the annual festival, screening everything from his Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Boston Marathon biopic “Stronger” to his horror re-quel “Halloween” at the event, 2024 marks the first time he will officially open the fall fest.
The film also sounds as if it marks a return to early form for the longtime auteur, who has spent his most recent years helming a series of horror-centric sequels and remakes, including three “Halloween” films and last year’s “The Exorcist: Believer.” For his newest feature, Green seems to be reinvested in the kind of personal drama that drove early films like “All the Real Girls” and “Undertow,” albeit with a slightly lighter touch.

The first twenty minutes of the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls (watch it Here) really creeped out movie-goers. It stuck in their heads, earning the movie cult classic status. The rest of the running time, viewers don’t often remember so clearly. So when Screen Gems gave the greenlight to a remake, they decided to expand those first twenty minutes to feature length, stretching out the thrills and suspense for as long as possible. It was a clever idea that was brought to the screen in an entertaining way. And if you haven’t seen the When a Stranger Calls remake, this is the best horror movie you never saw. (You can watch that one Here.)

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

As noted in this intro to a “Happy Sad Confused” conversation with David Gordon Green, the filmmaker behind “The Exorcist: Believer,” the director’s career is confusing to many. He began as an indie arthouse filmmaker; then started directing studio comedies, many of which were produced by Judd Apatow, and then, of course, he’s gone off on his recent horror detour which has included a “Halloween” trilogy that started in 2018 and what’s intended to be a new “Exorcist” trilogy that started this year with “Believer.”

The reality is that from the very beginning, Green claims he was a cinematic omnivore who looked at Steven Soderbergh, a filmmaker who’s tackled every genre under the sun, as his guiding light model.

(L-r:) Justice Smith and Julianne Moore in Sharper Image: Courtesy Apple TV+ A sharper is someone who “lives by their wits,” as the opening onscreen text of Sharper informs us. The double and triple-crosses pile up to preposterous heights in “Sharper,” a drama about con artists and the people they’re playing that takes the hoary adage “nothing is as it seems” to contrived extremes. A deep ensemble cast is game for this ambitiously overwrought material, but no amount of committed acting can overcome the movie’s manipulative artifice.
Things begin simply, with a title card introducing the first of the ensemble’s characters, “Tom.” Played by the likable Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Dominion”), Tom owns a small bookshop in lower Manhattan, where Sandra (Briana Middleton), a graduate college student working on her thesis, comes looking for a copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”
The couple hit it off and go out on a date, which soon leads to an intimate relationship. They bond over their mutual love of Fellini and their shared fluency in Italian.

Sharper, an A24 and Apple TV+ psychological thriller starring Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, opens with a love story. A graduate student named Sandra (Briana Middleton) walks into a used bookstore in New York searching for a first edition copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. The man working the counter, Tom (Justice Smith), is immediately smitten. He clumsily asks her on a date. She rejects him. Later that evening, Sandra returns to the store and timidly announces she’s changed her mind.
They fall into an easy romance: Mornings at the bookstore in Soho, afternoon walks in Washington Square Park, evenings spent cooking in Sandra’s apartment somewhere downtown. Tom and Sandra are a perfect match — a couple whose story would make for a great season of HBO’s Love Life. When Sandra vanishes, both Tom and the viewer are left to ask: What went wrong?...

There are typically three destinations for a short horror film. Most of the time, they stay short and sweet. Another common outcome for these quick flicks is their joining others in compilation movies (also known as “frankenthologies”). As for the last and most fortunate fate, a short might be turned into something bigger.
There is a long history of horror shorts being made into full-length features. The Evil Dead, Saw, Mama, The Babadook and Lights Out are just some prime examples. And with Parker Finn‘s Smile (based on Laura Hasn’t Slept) continuing the tradition in theaters this weekend, now is a good time to check out other similar transformations.

Exclusive: Reshma Shetty (Royal Pains), Damon Dayoub (Stitchers) and D.W. Moffett (Switched at Birth) have been cast in heavily recurring roles opposite Susan Sarandon, Anna Friel, Trace Adkins and Beth Ditto in Fox’s upcoming musical drama Monarch.
Created by Melissa London Hilfers, Monarch is described as a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music, the Romans. The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon). Along with her beloved husband Albie (Adkins), Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

Update: Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow narrowly led the international box office for Hollywood films this weekend, grossing an additional $29.9M from 48 material markets. That’s a 55% drop from opening, which most agree is decent even if there’s no getting around the fact that these are not Marvel-ous numbers. The overseas total is now even with domestic at $132M for $264M global. Contrary to last weekend, Disney did not break out streaming figures this time around.
The Scarlett Johansson-starrer — as did other films this session — had to contend with increased closures in Australia as well as further restrictions in Korea and Japan and fine weather for a change in the UK. It held No. 1s in Brazil, Korea, Italy, Russia, Spain and the UK. We’re told the mid-weeks were good and that the -55% is on par with F9’s second weekend drop in the same bucket of markets.

This month, HBO Max is bring some serious dramatic heat with the Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi series Raised by Wolves arriving on Sept. 3. And if science fiction isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, then HBO Max has identified something that is: true crime. The Murders at White House Farm will arrive at a date to be determined in September.
In addition to those intriguing original offerings, HBO Max is making the best of its WarnerMedia library this month. Doctor Who season 12 makes its long-awaited streaming debut on Sept. 1. Also arriving on the first of the month are Clerks, Election, and the hopefully-not-too-timely V for Vendetta.
Recent horror hit The Invisible Man arrives on Sept. 19. It is complemented by HBO Max original comedy Unpregnant on Sept. 10.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Max this month.

Apple has landed “Sharper,” an upcoming film about a con artist operating in the world of billionaires and one-percenters that is set to star Oscar-winner Julianne Moore.
The project is derived from a spec script by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who previously collaborated on “The Sitter” and “Superstore.” Apple says it purchased the script in a highly competitive situation.
Moore will produce “Sharper” with Bart Freundlich, Brian Gatewood, Alessandro Tanaka and Erik Feig of Picturestart. A24 will serve as the studio, with Picturestart attached as the production company.
“Sharper” is Moore’s second time working with Apple. She also stars in the upcoming limited series “Lisey’s Story,” a deeply personal thriller from writer Stephen King and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Moore will executive produce the project, which is set to premiere exclusively on Apple TV Plus. She is earned an Academy Award for...

For composer David Wingo, “The Report” was “the kind of movie I’ve always wanted to work on,” something that’s “in the vein of ’70s paranoia thrillers” like “All the President’s Men” (1976) and “Three Days of the Condor” (1975). “I feel like those kinds of movies aren’t getting made that much anymore, and those are some of my favorite films and some of my favorite scores.” The composer spoke at length about his score for the film while appearing at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, hosted by managing editor Chris Beachum. Watch our exclusive video interview with Wingo above.
SEEOscar predictions: Top 10 frontrunners for Best Actor include Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joaquin Phoenix and …
Wingo has long been attracted to films that are essentially about “people exchanging information to one another, and it’s mostly talking,” which is something that doesn’t happen a lot in the titles he works on.

Taking a cue from the theater and the old Hollywood studio system, Netflix has built up an impressive stock company of actors since getting into original programming. But interestingly, it is more coincidence than intentional creation of a repertory company.
The streaming giant does not have a dedicated casting department at the network level. Instead, Netflix originals work with a variety of casting directors, and the repetition in hiring talent is more hard work on the actors’ parts, as well as a byproduct of the seemingly never-ending river of content across a variety of genres that the service produces.
That’s not to say actors on other streaming services do not appear in more than one show. For example, “Pen15” co-creators and lead actresses Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle have popped up on “Casual” and “Ramy,” respectively. Meanwhile on Amazon, Bryan Cranston has starred in and executive produced “Sneaky Pete...

“Halloween” grossed $76 million its opening weekend and broke records in the process, so it’s hard to imagine there won’t be a sequel to the Blumhouse film.
That said, Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse Productions, told TheWrap that while there is definite interest there to make a sequel, nothing has been greenlit — yet.
“It’s hard to make a great movie, period, and I always say, make a great movie first and we’ll figure out a franchise after,” Blum told TheWrap. “Of course we would want to make a sequel, in fact, we’re dying to make a sequel, but we’re guests in Malek Akkad’s house so there are a lot of people that have to be in the same mindset as us. Nothing’s been set in stone, but we’re certainly going to try.”

It’s hard to pin down David Gordon Green as a filmmaker, which is both one of his greatest strength and a possible weakness. You don’t know exactly what you’ll get with one of his films. Early in his career, Green seemed like the heir apparent to Terrence Malick with his elegiac depictions of the modern American South in George Washington and All the Real Girls. But a few years later, it seemed like he was transitioning to being part of the Judd Apatow group of comedy filmmakers, having helmed Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and The Sitter. Though ...

Everyone in the thriller Hereditary is downright terrifying. As Annie, the matriarch of the Graham family, Toni Collette gave us chills. As for her little girl, Charlie? While she's adorable at first, things with her get ugly fast. And we don't even know how to start discussing the scenes featuring Annie's son, Peter, bashing his head against a desk - it's enough to give you instant nightmares.
Like us, in between screaming and being horrified at what you were seeing, you might have taken a moment to wonder where in the world you know Peter Graham from. The answer: lots of places.
You might recognize the actor, Alex Wolff, from a string of recent movies. He briefly pops up as "Young Spencer" (or the younger version of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character) in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, as well as John "Derf" Backderf, the good...

But who could possibly play Coach? Variety reports that “Stronger” and “All the Real Girls” filmmaker David Gordon Green is in final negotiations to direct a “reimagining” of the 2004 Universal film “Friday Night Lights,” which later spawned a beloved NBC series of the same name. The outlet hastens to add that this new film is both not a sequel to the film, directed by Peter Berg, or based on the series which starred Kyle Chandler as the lauded coach of a Texas high school football team.
Instead, the film will be a “new property” that is “still focused H.G. Bissinger’s non-fiction book about the 1988 Permian High School Panthers as the new Texas football team makes a run towards the state championship.” The book served as the inspiration for both the original film and television series.

This is not a thing I say often about Hollywood studio comedies. But Game Night! David Gordon Green directed the series finales of both HBO's Vice Principals and Amazon's Red Oaks, as well as the recent theatrical feature Stronger, thus reinforcing the notion that he refuses to be pinned down as a director. That may be the best preparation possible for his upcoming new version of Halloween. He has made features that are all over the map, starting with the delicately-crafted George Washington (2000), the relatively rambunctious All the Real Girls (2003), and then the impressive Undertow (2004) and Snow Angels (2007). His next three films, the comic trio of Pineapple Express (2008), Your Highness (2011), and, particularly, The Sitter (2011), felt like colossal wastes of his talent at the time. In retrospect, and considering the films and TV shows...

For fans of David Gordon Green’s more dramatic leanings — think his earlier films like “George Washington” and “All the Real Girls,” less the “Your Highness” and “The Sitter” years — his fact-based “Stronger” offers not precisely a return to form, but a return to his ability to find great meaning in world-weary emotions. His most grounded film yet and his first attempt to dramatizing a true story, “Stronger” takes an unvarnished tone to the kind of heartstring-pulling biopic that other directors might simply play for emotional fireworks, turning in a far more nuanced and satisfying experience in the process. Bolstered by sterling turns from stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, and Miranda Richardson, the film is a showcase for what Green has always been able to do so well, and what his actors continue to excel at.

It's difficult to get through the trailer for Stronger -- the real-life story of Jeff Bauman, who became a double amputee following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing -- without being brought to tears. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Bauman on screen and the movie's poster, debuting on Et, shows him mid-physical therapy with the tagline, "Strength Defines Us."

Director David Gordon Green tells Et that his film is more than just a tearjerker, though. "You're in for a ride," he said by phone. To celebrate the home entertainment release of I Am Not a Serial Killer, on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD 20 February, and available to download now, we have a copy of the film on Blu-ray, and a panda balaclava, courtesy of Bulldog Films Distribution!
A dazzlingly original, darkly funny and disturbing gem with a genre-bending twist, about a small town teenager in the Us, obsessed with serial killers, who unwittingly discovers the identity of the killer who has been slaughtering residents for body parts.
Featuring a star-making lead performance from 17-year-old Max Records, and an extraordinary turn from Back To The Future’s legendary Christopher Lloyd, I Am Not a Serial Killer is the most sheerly entertaining and audaciously offbeat offering since Donnie Darko hit cinema screens.
A big hit when it premiered at the South By Southwest Film Festival in March, and was a must-see film at the prestigious BFI London Film Festival.

Written and directed by James Sadwith, who based the film on his own real life experience with J.D. Salinger, the drama is set in 1969 and follows the 16-year-old outcast who finds solace in “The Catcher In The Rye” and deeply identifies with its protagonist. He decides to adapt the book into a play but before moving forward seeks the approval of the author himself, who is portrayed by Chris Cooper.
