Brendan Fraser is accustomed to being underestimated Until recently, he was never looked at as that kind of actor – the kind that’s considered a major contender during awards season. That all changed thanks to his seminal Oscar-winning performance in “The Whale” (from director Darren Aronofsky). But the truth is that he’s been a quality actor for a long time, and if his Big Moment wasn’t necessarily inevitable, it was perhaps overdue.
The actor who was born on December 3, 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana has been best known until now for starring in the “The Mummy” franchise. But Fraser has been a consistent presence on screens big and small for three decades, going back to his days headlining agreeably lowbrow comedies like “Encino Man” from 1992 and “Airheads” in [94. He also had a role in a Best Picture Oscar winner (2004’s “Crash”) and a pair of dramas that drew universal critical praise (“Gods and Monsters” from 1998 and “The Quiet American” from 2002). If Fraser ran into a bit of a slump over the past 15 years or so,...

Despite being a Hollywood staple during the late ’90s and early 2000s, The Mummy star Brendan Fraser surprisingly disappeared from the spotlight after 2008. While people speculated drugs, a s*x-scandal, illness, and even a poor career graph as the reason behind his exit, Fraser recently revealed the real reason behind leaving Hollywood.

After years of remaining out of the spotlight, when Brendan Fraser made his comeback with the 2022 Oscar-winning movie The Whale, the actor attributed his Hollywood exit to s*xual harassment. Admitting how it took him the courage to open up about the incident, Fraser claimed to be physically groped by the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Philip Berk.

I might have hated “Wicked.”
I say “might” not because I’m unsure of my general feelings toward the film, but rather because I’m unsure of what it means for me to hate a piece of art at a time when hair-trigger hostility is so deeply suffused into the air we breathe.
Sure, “piece of art” might be a generous way of describing the hideous first half of an $145 million studio musical adapted from a Broadway show that still feels like a Times Square tourist attraction even though it’s staged on 51st Street,...

For instance, many stars step away from the limelight and fade away with time. Their reasons could be personal, professional, or both. Either way, it doesn’t matter to the audience who only remembers the recurring faces.

A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big-screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.
On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliff-hangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.

Hugh Jackman created one of his most fan-favorite films when he collaborated with director Darren Aronofsky for The Fountain. Aronofsky is primarily known for his psychological tales incorporating surreal and unsettling facets. Despite not being a critical or commercial success like his other films, The Fountain later earned a cult classic tag.

Just like most Darren Aronofsky films, The Fountain also had an unconventional story. The 2006 flick starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz featured three versions of the duo woven by love across time and space. Some critics argued that at times, the film’s concept was too bizarre to grasp and the conclusion fell too hard despite an interesting story.
Nonetheless, Hugh Jackman asserted that the film turned his career forever. He added that the responses he gets for it are deeper and far more impactful than...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a man potentially becoming hoodwinked by unconventional spiritual practices at a "new-age retreat" in the upcoming horror movie Pendulum, to be written and directed by Black Swan writer Mark Heyman, reports Variety.
Pendulum revolves around a couple, Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail, who attend a spiritual retreat in New Mexico after a traumatic event. Abigail finds herself drawn to the group's mysterious leader.
More details on the synopsis: "Patrick is willing to do anything to help his wife, but becomes distrustful of the retreat’s enigmatic leader even as Abigail falls under her spell. As paranoia builds, the couple must determine if the group’s unconventional spiritual practices offer genuine healing – or mask a terrifying truth that threatens to consume them both."

Look, obviously the big news this November is the U.S. presidential election.
But for the moments when you want to look away from wall-to-wall coverage (or just stop doomscrolling), Netflix has plenty to keep you occupied. There’s new original Christmas movies like “Hot Frosty” and “The Merry Gentlemen,” as well as more “Outer Banks” for fans of that show created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. Plus Oscar contenders like “Emilia Perez” are now streaming on the service. But all of that is just preamble to our No. 1 pick this month, because when Mike Schur has a new television show, it’s time to pay attention.
Top Pick: “A Man on the Inside”

Exclusive: Jessica Chastain, Brendan Fraser and Bryan Cranston have joined Al Pacino in the mystery thriller Assassination. The film will be directed by Barry Levinson from a script by David Mamet, Levinson and Sam Bromell.
The film offers up a new take on the JFK conspiracy, centering around Kilgallen (Chastain), one of the most famous voices in media at the time. When she suspects that Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone, she uses her fame and influence to find President John F. Kennedy’s real killer. Part murder mystery, part film noir, Kilgallen’s journey will put her up against the CIA, mafia bosses and the FBI, all who would love nothing more than to make her and this story disappear.
“Dorothy Kilgallen was the first female crime reporter in America. She was the only woman to ever cover the JFK case. The only reporter to speak with Jack Ruby.

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.)
The award for Best Makeup was introduced in 1981, following an outcry over the lack of recognition for Christopher Tucker‘s groundbreaking work on “The Elephant Man” (1980). Hairstylists began sharing the award with makeup artists in 1993 when “Mrs. Doubtfire” won.

Deadline reports that Starz has cancelled The Serpent Queen after two seasons. However, the last season of the historical drama series did plant the seeds for a spinoff series, which is apparently in the works. More on that later.
Based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, The Serpent Queen stars Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici, who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. The second season, which wrapped up its run in August, concluded with the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, which left many thousands dead. There was obviously still more story to tell, but Starz executives “ultimately felt [the finale] provided a satisfactory conclusion of Catherine’s story for fans.“
Although both seasons of the series were highly rated (scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes), viewership for the second season didn’t quite reach the levels Starz had hoped for.

I'm going to cut right to the chase: Matt Smith, known for playing the Doctor on Doctor Who and Daemon Targaryen on House of the Dragon, is filming a new movie called Caught Stealing, a crime drama about a former baseball player who gets caught up in the world of underground crime in 1990. Smith doesn't play the baseball player; that honor goes to Austin Butler, lately of Dune: Part II and Elvis. Smith plays another character: I don't even know his name, but I know he wears a heavily studded jacked, plaid pants with chains, and a straight-up brown, red and yellow mohawk that makes him look like he was merged with a dirty paintbrush in a science experiment gone wrong.
I'm not actually going to post the image here, because it looks like it's a papparazzi photo and I don't want to get sued, but you can see it...

The Star Wars franchise was built upon the core trio of Luke, Leia, and Han, played by Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford in the original trilogy. However, the franchise has expanded over the decades, exploring different eras of the galaxy far far away. As new storytelling opportunities have emerged, a potential series focusing on a young Princess Leia Organa could be created.

Assuming that such a series materializes sometime in the future, one Stranger Things star would be the perfect replacement for Carrie Fisher, who sadly passed away a few years ago. Here is who we think would be an ideal pick for taking over and continuing the legacy of Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise if Lucasfilm decided to produce a series focusing on the character’s younger days.

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service… but things have turned out to be more complicated than expected. First, the lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show, then Fuller got the boot and was replaced. It remains to be seen when Crystal Lake will be going into production, but since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
First Showrunner
As mentioned, Bryan Fuller was steering this ship when it was first announced, and it nearly started filming with him (and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray) at the helm. Production was set to begin on July 22nd, with filming to last for seven to eight months.

Eventual Best Actress Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain was tributed at TIFF for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” as was Brendan Fraser for his work as an actor on the movie “The Whale.” And tributee Michelle Yeoh went on to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

As I sat through the North American premiere of Pablo Larraín’s biopic of Maria Callas at the Telluride Film Festival, which stars Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer, I couldn’t help but recall a line from Al Pacino in “The Godfather Part III” (1990): “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
It’s been an awfully long time since Jolie was contending for a statuette — her last acting nomination was for 2008’s “Changeling” and she’s spent the time since then starring in popcorn movies like “Salt” and “Maleficent” or directing films like “Unbroken.” But if you needed a reminder of what a formidable acting talent Jolie is, it’s on display in her transformative portrayal of one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. It’s a chameleonic turn that can best be described as a a kind of cinematic possession.

“Angelina! Angelina! Angelina!”
The Venice Film Festival loves its movie stars, and Angelina Jolie was the toast of Italy on Thursday night. The actress wept during an eight-minute standing ovation at the Sala Grande Theatre at the world premiere of “Maria,” Pablo Larraín’s biographical drama about the Greek opera singer Maria Callas.
The outpouring of love and emotion brings to mind another standing ovation in Venice that launched the Oscar campaign for Brendan Fraser in “The Whale,” as he sobbed through the applause that cemented a career comeback in 2022.
Jolie was similarly taken by the rapturous response, wiping away tears and at time turning her face away from the cheering as she was overcome by emotion. She hugged Larraín and the cast of the film, which is sure to be an Oscar contender, putting Jolie in the best actress race for the first time in 15 years.
Netflix will release “Maria” later this year.

You wanna get nuts? Then ask Michael Keaton a question about a controversial topic, and he’ll get nuts.
That’s what GQ discovered when they profiled Keaton in advance of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The magazine asked Keaton to weigh in on Batgirl, for which he returned as Batman. Even though the movie was almost finished, Warner Bros. decided to shelve it, electing for a tax break instead of completing and releasing the movie. The move outraged anyone who wants a long-running studio like Warner Bros to continue putting out movies. But not Keaton.
“I didn’t care one way or another,” Keaton admitted to GQ. “Big, fun, nice check.” To be clear, Keaton’s only talking for himself, not for any of the up-and-comers who were set back by Warner’s decision. Batgirl starred singer-turned-actor Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon and was directed by Belgian filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

The director of The Whale, Darren Aranofsky, may have reignited his interest in one of the DC Universe’s weirder superheroes: Plastic Man.
As it stands, Darren Aranofsky has his hands full with Caught Stealing, his upcoming drama starring Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz. The project is currently in pre-production with reports emerging today that Matt Smith and Liev Schreiber have been added to the cast. Announced back in March, the film sounds like a pretty straightforward narrative setup, at least by Aranofsky’s standards: the film follows ‘follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, who’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of 1990s New York City.’
That one is expected to shoot imminently, but a new listing on Production Weekly may point to Aranofsky’s next project: a take on the oddball DC superhero, Plastic Man. This isn’t a new story – six months ago,...

Sadie Sink has had quite the journey. She is one of the rare performers who had the fate of having done Broadway even before entering her teens. It is another story that she called it quits at 11. That did not deter her from becoming a sensation with Stranger Things, striking gold as Max Mayfield.

Will "Stranger Things" go full "Game of Thrones" and kill off most of its characters in its fifth and final season? If stars Millie Bobby Brown and Maya Hawke have any say in the matter, it might -- although showrunners/creators Matt and Ross Duffer seem a tad less inclined to end their remarkably-popular '80s nostalgia-fest with a no-holds-barred bloodbath. Not that this means everyone will be alive and well by the time the good people of Hawkins have concluded their battle with the scheming Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). In fact, we know for sure one member of the "Stranger Things" gang will be (temporarily?) out of commission when season 5 begins.
For those whose memories have gotten a little rusty in the 84 years since "Stranger Things" dropped new episodes on Netflix, the show's fourth season ended with our favorite red-haired rebel, Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), comatose after being possessed...

When Sadie Sink was 11 years old, she started having panic attacks. After acting professionally for three years, she was starring in a Broadway revival of “Annie,” which she’d been loving. “And then it just flipped,” she says. “Singing became the worst thing ever. I was terrified by it.”
Turns out, the unyielding pressure of a Broadway show had Sink convinced that a single wrong note or flubbed line — anything less than absolute perfection — meant the show was ruined. “I didn’t want to sing ever again.”
So she gave it up.
Two years later, Sink was back on Broadway, in the Peter Morgan drama “The Audience” as a young Queen Elizabeth II opposite Helen Mirren. The part did not involve singing, but on the first night of previews, Sink felt the old panic bubbling up. She didn’t want to go out on the stage.

Deadpool & Wolverine composer Rob Simonsen gave insight into his focus for the Marvel movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman that is hitting theaters this weekend.
Simonsen took part in a panel of film and television composers during San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, where he praised director Shawn Levy and producer-star Reynolds for allowing him to concentrate on his primary agenda: having fun with the music. Also participating in the event were composers Christopher Lennertz (The Boys), Leopold Ross (Shogun), Michael Abels (Star Wars: The Acolyte) and Sherri Chung (Found), alongside moderator Michael Giacchino (The Batman).
After Giacchino jokingly asked Simonsen if he felt pressure knowing that the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe rests on his shoulders, Simonsen made it clear that the bond that he built with Reynolds and Levy on their 2022 Netflix film The Adam Project carried over to Deadpool & Wolverine.

Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera says he’s been “toiling for the past nine months like a factory worker on an assembly line at a Chaplinesque pace” to assemble the star-studded lineup he just unveiled that on paper also looks like one of his best.
The Lido’s upcoming 81st edition features a geographically balanced mix of known names and potential discoveries across a wide range of genres spanning from pure entertainment to highly political works and marking the return of erotically charged cinema, as Barbera tells Variety.
It looks like a great lineup. Are you happy?
Yes, of course I’m happy. I’m very happy because, as you say, the lineup is rich and varied. Let’s say that I’m 95%-98% happy, because we can always do better. But, having said that, I actually have to note that this year’s selection reflects the ambitions...

As expected, Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux will make its debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
The Venice Film Festival line-up was announced earlier today. We won’t bore you with the entire list of the titles on show – you can find that here. But suffice it to say, the line-up is full of indie darlings as well as plenty of mainstream filmmakers bringing their latest projects to the world’s oldest film festival.
One of the biggest titles heading to the Lido is Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux. In 2019, Joker won the Golden Lion to everyone’s surprise, starting the film’s unlikely but hugely successful awards run which culminated in two Oscars.
The sequel is debuting in the festival’s prestige competition line-up, meaning it’s up for the Golden Lion again. If it were to win it, it would be the first time...

Chugga-Chugga, Chugga-Chugga, Choo-choo! "What's that noise?" we hear you cry. Why, it's the sound of the Brenaissance hype train continuing to gather speed, of course. Yes folks, after learning just last week that Andrew Scott is set to lead Anthony Maras' (Hotel Mumbai) upcoming WWII movie Pressure, Deadline has now confirmed that resurgent The Whale star Brendan Fraser has also joined the line-up for the true-story based D-Day thriller.
Fraser is set to play Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower in Maras' film, which is set to see in-demand All Of Us Strangers and Ripley star Scott play unsung war hero Group Captain James Stagg. As the meteorologist who persuaded Eisenhower to change the date of the Normandy Landings, Stagg's elemental acuity under immense pressure also changed the course of the war for the Allied Forces. It'll be interesting then to see Fraser and Scott, two intensely magnetic screen presences...

Academy Award® winner Brendan Fraser has been cast in ‘Pressure,’ joining the recently announced Andrew Scott in the role of Britain’s chief meteorological officer James Stagg.
Fraser takes on the role of Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In the seventy-two hours leading up to D-Day, all the pieces are in place except for one key element – the British weather. Britain’s chief meteorological officer James Stagg (Andrew Scott) is called upon to deliver the most consequential forecast in history, locking him into a tense standoff with the entire Allied leadership. The wrong conditions could devastate the largest ever seaborne invasion, while any delay risks German intelligence catching on.
With only his trusted aide Captain Kay Summersby to confide in, and haunted by a catastrophic D-Day rehearsal, the final decision rests with Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser).
Also in news – Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters join cast...
