In consideration of the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011, the Japanese distributor canceled the planned release of the film later that month. The film which depicted the 1976 Tangshan earthquake was eventually released in the country in March 2015 in dozens of theaters, as opposed to hundreds it was planned for 4 years earlier.
The Tangshan earthquake of 28 July, 1976 was a magnitude 7.6 earthquake. It mainly affected the industrial city of Tangshan, located in the province of Hebei. The Official estimates of casualties speak of 242,419 deaths caused by the earthquake. Additional casualty estimates may also include those who were injured by the earthquake, but died in subsequent months.
