Andrew Cumming’s Stone Age thriller Out Of Darkness leads the film nominations for the 2024 Bafta Scotland Awards, nominated in three categories including best feature film.

The film, which follows a gang of early humans who suspect a malevolent being is hunting them down, also received nominations for actor film for Kit Young, and actress film for Safia Oakley-Green.

Ella Glendining, UK director of the Bafta-nominated Sundance premiere Is There Anybody Out There? is among the nine recipients of the Independent Cinema Office (Ico) Miles Ketley Memorial Fund bursary, which has £15,000 to give across three years to early career filmmakers.

The bursary is funded by the Ico with the aim of supporting filmmakers from communities traditionally excluded from the industry.

In addition to Glendining, this year’s recipients are Bim Ajadi, Debbie Hannan, Fabia Martin , Sorcha Bacon, Yvonne Zhang, Hannah Tookey, Rhea Storr and Jessi Gutch.

Exclusive: The jury for the Jodie Whittaker-backed £25,000 Empower Film Fund for female and non-binary filmmakers has been set.

Whittaker’s former Doctor Who co-star Mandip Gill will be on the jury alongside BAFTA-nominee Ella Glendining (Is There Anybody Out There?), BAFTA-nominee Ameenah Ayub Allen (Rocks) and Curtis Brown Agent Cynthia Okoye. They join Primetime founder Victoria Emslie and Funding Futures exec Will Shutt on the jury, along with Whittaker.

Whittaker will feature in or voice the winning film with the intention of increasing the visibility of the project and filmmaker selected.

Launched at last year’s Cannes by Primetime and Funding Futures, the short film competition will back one female or non-binary filmmaker to make a short film with a minimum of a £10,000 grant in addition to a camera shooting package hire with a value of up to £15,000 from Hawk London, which recently opened a London HQ.

The 2024 BAFTAs are here!

The 77th British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTAs, were held on Sunday (February 18) at the Royal Festival Hall in Southbank Centre in London, England.

The ceremony honored the best national and foreign films of 2023, presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, with awards being handed out for the best feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality that were screened at British cinemas in 2023.

The stars and artists behind the biggest films of 2023 descended on London this weekend for the BAFTA Film Awards. British film’s biggest night is often seen as the best predictor of Oscar momentum before the Academy Awards and the results often mirror each other.

If that’s the case this year, it will be all “Oppenheimer” all the time. Universal’s Christopher Nolan epic took home many of the night’s biggest categories, winning the top prize of Best Film along with Best Director for Nolan, Leading Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. The film also picked up major craft wins for Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score.

The 2024 BAFTA film awards nominations are in, and Universal’s historical epic Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, leads the way with 13 nods, followed by Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things from director Yorgos Lanthimos with 11.

Overall, Disney and Searchlight lead the way with 22 total nominations, according to statistics provided by BAFTA. The haul is driven by the strong outing by Poor Things, as well as six nods for Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers. Also boosting the Disney tally are single noms for Pixar’s Elemental, which is up for best animated film, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is up for a special visual effects BAFTA.

Meanwhile, Universal earned 14 nominations on Thursday, including one for Earth Mama which got Savanah Leaf (writer, director, producer), Shirley O’Connor (producer) and Medb Riordan (producer) a nod in the Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director or producer category.

This year, Oppenheimer scored the most nominations with a total of 13. Poor Things received the second-most nominations this year with a total of 11.

There are some big surprises within the nominations including no nomination for Lily Gladstone and her director Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon. In addition, Barbie’s Greta Gerwig and Poor Things‘ Yorgos Lanthimos were not nominated in the Best Director category.

The British Academy announced the nominees for their annual awards on Thursday (January 10).

This year’s ceremony is set to take place on February 18 live from London, England with David Tennant hosting.

It’s BAFTA time! The full list of nominees for the biggest day in the British film industry calendar have just been revealed.

A few surprise additions and snubs in this year’s list. Lily Gladstone was crowded out of a packed Lead Actress category in favour of Rye Lane's Vivian Oparah, despite winning the Best Drama Performance at the Golden Globes last week. Martin Scorsese has also missed out on a Best Director nod for Killers Of The Flower Moon, while Emerald Fennel’s Saltburn surprisingly dominated the acting categories, with tips for Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” appears to be the film to beat going into the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, having landed 13 nominations, with the director’s most successful film in the U.K. in terms of box office now becoming its most-nominated on home soil.

Announced Thursday from London, the atomic bomb biopic is nominated for best film, director (which could earn Nolan his shocking first-ever BAFTA), leading actor for Cillian Murphy and supporting nods for both Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.

Close behind sits Yorgos Lanthimos’ steampunk black comedy “Poor Things” with 11 nominations, including for best film and actress for Emma Stone.

But for all the achievements of “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” the biggest talking point is likely to be the snubbing of Greta Gerwig’s box office destroying cultural phenomenon “Barbie” across so many categories.

The film went into the nominations tied with both “Oppenheimer” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 15 Longlist slots.

Ella Glendining is both the director and subject of documentary “Is There Anybody Out There?,” a global search for someone with a body that looks like hers.

The film debuted at Sundance this year and went on to achieve global acclaim, winning a slew of awards along the way. Recent accolades include winning the BFI and Chanel Filmmaker Award and being named as one of the U.K. talents in the BAFTA Breakthrough 2023 cohort.

“A big thing for me making a personal film was that I was insecure and worried that people would think that I was just the subject of a documentary, but to be recognized on this level is an incredible confidence boost in terms of me as a filmmaker, because that’s who I am. What I am first and foremost is a filmmaker and a storyteller,” Glendining, who was born with a rare leg disability, told Variety.

Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.

Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.

Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Andrew Haigh‘s Oscar hopeful had a wonderful night at the British Independent Film Awards on Sunday as it took home seven gongs including Best Picture, the most of any film. Haigh won two awards — Best Director and Best Screenplay. Paul Mescal won Best Supporting Performance alongside “How to Have Sex” actor Shaun Thomas while it also won Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Music Supervision.

“Rye Lane” won a trio of prizes: Raine Allen Miller was Best Debut Director while Vivian Oparah was awarded Best Breakthrough Performance. It also won Best Original Music.

Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” in a stacked gender-neutral category that also included Jodie Comer (“The End We Start From”), Tia Nomore (“Earth Mama”), Nabhaan Rizwan (“In Camera”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), and Tilda Swinton (“The Eternal Daughter”). And Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay shared in Best Joint Lead Performance for “Femme.

Once more we celebrate another remarkable year for British talent, as the 2023 British Independent Film Awards rolled out their red carpet this evening. The British Independent Film Awards took place on Sunday, December 3 in London, honoring the best independent films from around the world. “Rye Lane” led the pack with 16 nominations, followed by “All of Us Strangers” and “Scrapper,” which both earned 13 nominations a piece. BAFTA Breakthrough is a wonderful Netflix-supported initiative that celebrates the very best of young talent. In its 10th year, the alumni boasts the likes of Florence Pugh, Tom Holland and Letitia Wright – and this year comes a whole host of exciting new names. One of which caught our eye especially, which is Vivian Oparah, who shone in Peckham-set rom-com Rye Lane, which enamoured viewers with its spring-time release. We discuss what it means to her to be named as a BAFTA Breakthrough artist, and naturally we look back to Rye Lane, to talk about shooting the film, and the lasting, indelible impact it has left. She also looks ahead to a future that we’re gonna consider pretty damn bright.

A galaxy of 42 emerging creative talents from across the U.S., U.K. and India have been unveiled as the 2023 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort.

The selected talents have worked on some of the most lauded projects over the last several months including “The Last of Us,” “1923,” “Blue Jean,” “Rye Lane,” “Rocket Boys” and “Joyland.”

Breakthrough is BAFTA’s flagship new talent initiative in partnership with Netflix, drawn from creatives working in film, games and television. Awarded to those in the midst of, or on the cusp of their breakthrough moment, the year-long initiative includes one-to-one meetings and career guidance, full voting membership, access to BAFTA events and screenings, as well as networking events, both in the U.K. and internationally.

This year’s cohort comprises creatives spanning craft specialisms from hair and make up, production, editing and games design, to performance, directing and cinematography and is from diverse ethnic backgrounds and abilities.

Six of the 20 UK talents have previously been named Screen Stars of Tomorrow.

Actors Bella Ramsey and Vivian Oparah, and filmmakers Adjani Salmon and Raine Allen-Miller are among 32 talents selected for the 10th anniversary edition of the Bafta Breakthrough programme.

The 2023 edition of the talent-spotting scheme includes 20 UK names, and 12 individuals from the US.

It is a formidable debut feature by a filmmaker who has refused to allow society’s expectations or prejudices about her disability to stand in her way, instead using her tenacity to build a career in a notoriously difficult and ableist industry. Spanning 14 tracks, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’Est La Vie is truly a theatrical affair, with a spoken word prologue and several different “acts” occurring between the songs, all performed by actor (and longtime fan) Martin Freeman. Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes is going to battle at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend in 658 locations.

It is the widest opening for the franchise so far, ahead of previous instalment Mockingjay - Part 2 which opened in 576 sites. That title debuted on £11.3m but failed to beat the franchise record currently held by Mockingjay – Part 1, which opened in 2014 on £12.7m from 565 locations.

Feature debutant Raine Allen-Miller’s “Rye Lane” led the nominations at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) with 16 nods.

“Scrapper” by debutant Charlotte Regan and veteran Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” scored 14 nominations each while Molly Manning Walker’s “How to Have Sex” had 13, Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s “Femme” 11 and Mahalia Belo’s “The End We Start From” nine. The nominations were revealed by actors Susan Wokoma (“Enola Holmes”) and Morfydd Clark (“Saint Maud”) at an announcement event at One Hundred Shoreditch, London.

From 2022, the awards went permanently gender neutral for acting categories with the traditional best and supporting actress and actor awards being replaced by best lead performance, best supporting performance, best joint lead performance — for performances that are the joint focus of the film — and best ensemble.

The winners will be announced at the BIFA ceremony on Dec. 3.

Budget cap for the retitled award has risen to £1m.

Mark Jenkin’s Enys Men and Edward Lovelace’s Name Me Lawand are among the 11 films longlisted for the renamed Bifa Maverick award, which has an increased budget cap this year.

Formerly the Raindance Discovery award, the Maverick prize is now open to independent UK features made for up to £1m – up from the previous cap of £500,000.

“The Kitchen” co-director and co-writer Daniel Kaluuya and “Polite Society” writer-director Nida Manzoor are among the emerging talents recognized at the British Independent Film Awards’ (BIFA) New Talent categories.

Both have been longlisted twice, in the debut director and debut screenwriter categories. In all, 20 fiction and 15 documentary features have been longlisted in the four debut filmmaking categories. Nineteen first-time fiction feature directors, 17 first-time feature documentary directors, 17 first-time writers and 24 breakthrough producers have been recognized by BIFA voters this year.

BIFA Springboard, an annual program supporting second-time feature filmmakers will launch in early 2024. BIFA will reveal the Netflix-sponsored 2023 breakthrough performance longlist, which highlights British acting talent in their first significant role in a British feature film, on Oct. 24. The final five nominations in each category will be unveiled on Nov. 2. Winners will be revealed at the 26th BIFA ceremony on Dec. 3.

The ceremony has released longlists for four awards: the Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director), Best Debut Screenwriter, Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary (a new award for this year) and Breakthrough Producer.

UK ska band Madness have announced their 13th album, Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’Est La Vie, out November 17th via BMG. As a preview, they’ve shared three songs from the project. Stream the tracks below.

Theatre of the Absurd marks the first album from Madness since 2016’s Can’t Touch Us Now. It was recorded in Cricklewood, London at the beginning of this year, where members Graham “Suggs” McPherson, Mark Bedford, Chris “Chrissy Boy” Foreman, Mike “Barso” Barson, Lee Thompson, and Dan “Woody” Woodgate found harmony alongside engineer and mixer Matt Galsbey.

Tying the 14 songs together is a prologue from actor (and longtime fan) Martin Freeman that runs throughout the album. Pre-orders for Theatre of the Absurd are ongoing. See the artwork and full tracklist below.

Glendining was named a Screen Star of Tomorrow in 2020.

Conic has acquired all UK-Ireland distribution rights to Ella Glendining’s documentary Is There Anybody Out There?.

The Glasgow-based distributor is planning a theatrical release for autumn 2023, having bought the title from sales agent Autlook.

Is There Anybody Out There? premiered in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance Film Festival in January, going on to play SXSW, Thessaloniki, Cph:Dox and HotDocs.

The film follows filmmaker Glendining’s search for someone with a body that looks like hers, and explores what it takes to love yourself fiercely as a disabled person in an ableist world.

Toronto’s Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival, has added 12 films to its Special Presentations program. The first tranche of titles was announced March 14. The festival runs April 27 to May 7.

The four short films centre around the theme of love.

Film4 has commissioned a collection of four short films from disabled and neurodivergent filmmakers titled ‘4Love’.

The filmmakers, who include 2020 Screen Stars of Tomorrow Ella Glendining and Matilda Ibini, were commissioned by Film4 to create a short film inspired by or challenging the theme of love.

104 Films, a production company that regularly works with disabled and neurodivergent UK talent, produced the films which will be released in the UK later this year.

A second wave of film and television programming has been announced for this year’s South by Southwest Conference and Festivals, with highlights including the series debuts of “Swarm” and Steven Yeun starring “Beef” on opening and closing night, respectively.

A full list of honorees in the visions, global presented by Mubi, 24 beats and festival favorites categories was also unveiled in tandem with additions to previously announced sections.
