Episode dated 16 April 1962

Fortunately, this particular episode of "Calendar" somehow exists today and can downloaded for free from archive.org. The show consists of Harry Reasoner interviewing one of the greats of silent films, Harold Lloyd. In addition to this interview are a couple old commercials--one for the Easter Seals and the other advertising a show that starred Jackie Cooper ("Hennessey").

As far as the interview with Lloyd went, it was a heck of a treat to watch--mostly because I am a HUGE fan of his films. Lloyd was unusual in that he retired when relatively young, avoided parties and the Hollywood lifestyle and seemed quite happy. Here in the show, he seemed very relaxed and gracious as they showed clips of his film and discussed them. A couple things to note--he tended to keep his right hand at his side because he was missing some of his fingers due to an accident that occurred on the set. Also, Lloyd did tell a half-truth--but one they wouldn't have known at the time. When talking about the incredibly dangerous work Lloyd did on films like "Safety Last" (where he climbed a building), Lloyd said he really did do the trick himself (that's true) and he also said that it really was THAT high (which it wasn't). This optical illusion was exposed in the Kevin Brownlow documentary "Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius". Well worth seeing.
