Bruce Campbell Discusses His “Hysteria!” Character Arc and Reveals What He’d Like to See in Season 2
Peacock’s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” plunged its small Michigan town into full-blown Satanic Panic. Thanks to its teen protagonists and an atypically sympathetic police chief, order is mostly restored in Happy Hollow by season’s end.
Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) had a particularly stressful arc in showrunners Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman’s (The Orville) inaugural season; the observant yet patient small-town lawman nearly succumbed to the hysteria himself and rallied to survive a near-death confrontation with The Reverend (Garret Dillahunt). The finale wraps up the season’s overarching questions, yet leaves lingering signs that The Reverend and Tracy Whitehead’s (Anna Camp) devious machinations still have roots in Happy Hollow.
Considering that Campbell plays his cop character with unconventional kindness and is billed as a guest star, not series regular, where does that leave the actor regarding the future of the series?

The first season of Peacock‘s Hysteria! dropped on October 18, and the series is perfect for the person who loves horror movie vibes all year round, mixed with a love of heavy metal and nostalgia. Peacock's supernatural horror series, Hysteria!, introduces viewers to the show and one of its main actors, Jessica Treska, who plays Judith.
Hysteria! (which is unironically the title of Def Leppard's most popular album (and one of its most popular songs)) follows a high school heavy metal band that uses the Satanic Panic movement of the 1980s to build its reputation after the football team's quarterback goes missing.
All eight episodes of the show premiered on Peacock on October 18, and even though the series was just released, Hysteria showrunner and creator Matthew Scott Kane is already hoping that it will last four seasons.

Famous horror actor Bruce Campbell is making his return to television horror with the new Peacock series “Hysteria!” The show marks Campbell’s first major horror television role since ending his run on “Ash vs Evil Dead” in 2018. In “Hysteria!,” Campbell plays Chief Dandridge, a police chief investigating strange disappearances in a town gripped by fears of satanic influences.
At 66 years old, Campbell is taking on a very different role than his most famous character, Ash Williams from “The Evil Dead” franchise. Instead of playing an unwitting hero facing supernatural chaos, Chief Dandridge enters as an established authority figure meant to solve the town’s problems. Campbell said this change was an “intriguing contrast” that brought “maturity and gravitas” to his horror work.

For those about to rock, we rebuke you! The very real nightmare of adolescence collides with a hellacious 40-year-old conspiracy theory in Hysteria!, Peacock‘s chilling dramedy that plays like My-So-Called Life meets the Salem Witch Trials. Set in a Midwestern suburb amid the late-‘80s “Satanic Panic” that had parents convinced hard rock was a force of evil, the chaos kicks off after a high-school football star goes missing. Seizing on the town’s sudden paranoia about cult culture, teen outcast Dylan (Emjay Anthony) and his only pals make a play for popularity by adding a Satanic slant to their struggling heavy metal band. But instead of just drawing a crowd with their pentagrams and songs about the devil, they draw the suspicion of a no-nonsense cop (Bruce Campbell), a zealous church lady (Anna Camp), and Dylan’s freaked-out mom (Julie Bowen) who all begin to fear that the...

The last few years have probably felt familiar to many, with a constant blame game in the media attributing violence and crime to one thing or another. Those who lived through the 1980s likely remember the Satanic Panic that spread through the United States, where politicians blamed all sorts of things on kids and teenagers becoming obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. This panic was reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials, which in turn were like the Red Scare of the 1950s. Now, we get to look back at this crazy era through a modern lens, thanks to Hysteria!

‘Hysteria!’ Stars Julie Bowen and Bruce Campbell Debate the ‘Horror and the Beauty’ of Satanic Panic
Julie Bowen and Bruce Campbell star as, respectively, a suburban mom and a seen-it-all cop in Peacock’s “Hysteria!,” which turns the very real Satanic Panic of the ’80s into a rollicking, heavy-metal flavored comedy about demons.
The two actors, who already lived through the 1980s, had very different experiences during the era. Bowen told TheWrap she grew up in a conservative family and was afraid of supposedly Satanic things like hard rock and Dungeons and Dragons. Interestingly, Campbell, who became a chainsaw-wielding horror icon in Sam Raimi’s 1981 indie “Evil Dead,” didn’t like heavy metal music either — or most of the decade, for that matter.
TheWrap spoke with both stars about revisiting the time period and how they’ve been pitching the show to their friends and family.

When people think of Julie Bowen as an actress, Modern Family often comes to mind before anything else. Julie played the lovable role of Claire Dunphy on the show for 11 seasons starting in 2009. The sitcom is highly revered for being one of the most progressive TV shows in recent history.
Modern Family did so well that it earned tons of awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Here’s what Julie just admitted about breaking free from the role of Claire.

Peacock’s Hysteria! is a fun and exciting teen horror show perfect for the Halloween season. The show follows a small town in which a young boy named Dylan and his friends play in a heavy metal band. It’s the 1980s, and the “Satanic Panic” is at its height across the country, putting everybody in a stir. At the beginning of Hysteria! a jock from Dylan’s school named Ryan goes missing. What nobody knows is that he’s been picked up by a couple of men wearing odd masks that make them look almost alien-like. It’s Scream all over again. Also, Ryan was with a girl named Faith during this attack, and at first, it looks like she’s been killed, but she returns home all muddied and scared a few days later. However, she’s surprised to realize nobody actually thinks she’s been missing; they...

Peacock’s Hysteria! is just a fun teen horror show that tells the story of a town stuck in mass hysteria at the peak of the “Satanic Panic.” The show follows a teen “delinquent” (only because he’s in a heavy metal band and spends most of his life guitaring alone in the basement) Dylan, whose life changes when he pretends to be a Satanist to impress a girl. Well, technically, he does it so his band gets some love, but it also gets him the girl, so he decides to stick with it until things get (more than) a little bit out of hand. Dylan, Spud, and Jordy begin their make-believe cult when jock Ryan goes missing for a few days and the whole town speculates there are some dark forces at play. During Hysteria’s ending, we finally learn who “The Reverend” is and why Tracy’s obsessed with him.

I want to say I had my fair share of teen horror growing up, but it wouldn’t be true, because as I’m writing this, I can’t think of a single show that fits the category. I don’t know if Pretty Little Liars really counts, but my first encounter with a “horror” show outside of the Indian Shh! Koi Hai or Aahat, which first aired a year before I was born (dang), was Supernatural, which in my opinion was technically for adults. Then would it be ironic for me to say horror is my favorite genre? I wouldn’t think so. Now, don’t get me wrong, there will be those who gate-keep the genre for people who’ve only seen the “classics,” which, for the most part, I haven’t. However, this doesn’t take away from my experiences of loving the genre growing up and...

If you’re a circumspect first-time TV creator given vaguely free rein, you have two choices (for the purposes of this exercise).
One, you can render your vision in the most easily digestible way possible, to make a series that is clearly promotable and satisfyingly resolved, in the hopes of engineering a hit and getting to make other shows in the future.
Or two, you can throw every idea in your brain in the general vicinity of the screen, aware that success is never guaranteed and you may never have another shot.
Sure, the result of the second course of action might be complete and utter chaos that audiences won’t know how to process and networks won’t know how to sell. Still, at least you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing you left nothing on the table.

Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” is set to tackle the era of Satanic Panic, with heavy metal and actual Satanism sowing generational division in a small conservative town in Michigan. And what’s Michigan horror without actor Bruce Campbell?
The actor guest stars as Chief Dandridge in the series, set to premiere all episodes on Friday, October 18, 2024.
“Hysteria!” follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity, written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). Caught in the middle of the mounting tension between adults and teens is Campbell’s police chief.
Unlike his most iconic character, Ash Williams, Chief Dandridge prefers logic and science. Though he isn’t your typical small-town police chief. That’s because he treats the teens with respect and compassion, a far cry from the typical parents in suburban set ’80s horror.

Plot Overview: A Town Gripped by Fear

Hysteria! follows a group of teenagers who become entangled in a series of mysterious events after a classmate goes missing. When Sam Raimi signed on to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it was pretty much a given that he was going to give his longtime friend and Evil Dead franchise star Bruce Campbell a cameo somewhere in the film, just like he had Campbell appear in each one of the Spider-Man movies he directed.. Sure enough, Campbell showed up in the Doctor Strange movie as a character called Pizza Poppa – and in interviews given since then, Campbell has stated that not only his Pizza Poppa a variant of his Spider-Man character(s), but he also has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Over a year after the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Campbell told ComicBook.com, “The cameos are like, in the Spider-Man movies — if you know anything about the multiverse, you know now, retroactively, I’m in the multiverse now because of Doctor Strange.

Robert Watts, a production manager on George Lucas’ Star Wars and producer on its first two sequels along with Steven Spielberg’s first three blockbuster Indiana Jones movies and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, died Monday in his sleep at his home in West Sussex, England. He was 88.
His rep Julian Owen of Alliance Media confirmed the news to Deadline, writing: “Goodnight to my wonderful friend and client Robert Watts, Producer of some of the most famous films in cinema history. … Talking about his career was his favourite thing to do. We had some amazing adventures together which I will cherish forever.”
After working on Star Wars, Watts was an associate producer on smash 1980 sequel The Empire Strikes Back, which solidified and furthered the Star Wars galaxy as a cultural touchstone. The next year he served in the same role for Raiders of the Lost Ark, which introduced the world to...

Somehow, inexplicably, it is October, which means the Halloween girlies are at their strongest. By “Halloween girlies” (a gender-neutral term), I do mean “television networks,” which will continue their fall programming now with a healthy dose of horror.
Peacock’s Satanic panic series “Hysteria!” combines good old-fashioned teen angst with the occult, while Starz has a “coming-of-rage story” about an unassuming girl who takes a liking to murder. Apple has not one but two psychological thrillers — in case you prefer “stressful” to “scary” — with “Before” starring Billy Crystal and “Disclaimer” with Cate Blanchett.
And if nothing horrifies you more than the state of modern Hollywood, there is HBO’s “The Franchise,” a deeply meta comedy series about life on the set of a major superhero movie (with an MCU actor to boot!).
For more fall offerings, there’s IndieWire’s Fall TV Preview, which includes 28 new and returning shows from September through November.

I don't know if it's just because I'm really missing the show or there's more to it, but watching the Hysteria! on Peacock trailer is just giving me Stranger Things vibes and I'm so here for it. And though the Netflix series is already dark, this one looks to be even darker. So I think that if you're a fellow Stranger Things fan like me, you'll want to check out Hysteria! too!
The new horror thriller premieres Friday, Oct. 18, 2024 with all 8 episodes on Peacock. That's right, it's going to be a binge-watch. I personally think these episodes should have had more of a weekly release instead. But, that's what the streamer wants I guess. We shared the trailer below:
Do you see what I mean? Just the sets and being in the '80s time period is giving off Stranger Things, for sure. The two shows have a very similar look to them.

Remember the 1989 black comedy film The 'Burbs starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher? Well, Peacock just announced that they will be creating a television version of the film starring Emmy-winning actress Keke Palmer, who will also executive produce!
Palmer is a great actress, and it's cool to see her veering more toward genre spaces. She delivered a phenomenal performance in Jordan Peele's Nope. I'm eager to see what she brings to the table here.
The 'Burbs has received a straight-to-series order from the streaming service, meaning we can expect development to start soon. Brian Grazer (who produced the 1989 movie) and Seth McFarlane (Ted) will team up on the series reimagining, which comes from UCP, Imagine Entertainment, and Fuzzy Door. Celeste Hughey is set to write and executive produce.
Per the press release, The 'Burbs takes place in "present-day suburbia" and revolves around a cul-de-sac where new neighbors disrupt the regular way of life,...

The devil is in the details, or in the case of Hysteria!, in a local heavy metal band.
Hysteria! is one of two original series Peacock has lined up to scare the bejesus out of viewers this Halloween.
The other is Teacup, based on Robert McCammon’s 1988 science fiction horror novel Stinger, set to premiere on October 10.

Horror icon Bruce Campbell guest stars in Hysteria! as the town’s police chief, so you know it’s going to be good.
Here’s everything else we know so far about Hysteria!
What is Hysteria About?
Set in the fictional town of Happy Hallow, Michigan, in the 1980s, Hysteria! explores the “satanic panic” of that era.
The story follows a group of high school kids who decide to put the pedal to the metal, literally, by rebranding their heavy metal band as a Satanic metal band.
Why would they do such a devilish thing?...
