When teenage geek Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) realizes that his new neighbor Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell) is a vampire, he tries to convince his mother Jane (Toni Collette) and his girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots), but they don't believe him. Fearing for his life, Charley is forced to enlist the help of 'the world's foremost (self-acclaimed) expert on vampires' Peter Vincent (David Tennant), an actor-magician on a Las Vegas vampire-themed TV show called 'Fright Night'.

Holland's screenplay was adapted for this movie by American screenwriter Marti Noxon. It was followed by straight-to-video Fright Night 2 (2013) (2013).

Yes. Chris Sarandon, the actor who played Jerry Dandrige in the original 1985 movie, has a cameo in this one. Look for him as a motorist who hits Jane's SUV while she, Charley, and Amy are trying to escape from the vampire. Sarandon, this time named "Jay Dee", gets out of his car to assess the damage and falls prey to Dandrige.

Just as Amy is about to bite Charley's neck, he stakes her in the chest, taking care to miss her heart, as he plans to use the St Michael stake on Jerry, thereby releasing Amy and all of Jerry's vampire minions. Charley then goes looking for Peter Vincent, while picking up a rifle and shooting holes in the ceiling, letting in the sunlight. He and Peter take refuge in a small patch of sunlight against the wall, but Peter notices that he's beginning to smoke, an indication that he's turning. Jerry reminds Charley that he's basically doomed, as the sun's got to eventually set. Realizing that it's time to put his plan into action, Charley dons his fireproof outfit, sets himself on fire, then leaps on Jerry, setting him on fire, too. Meanwhile, Peter continues to shoot holes in the ceiling, letting in even more sunlight. He tosses the St Michael stake to Charley, who uses it to stab Jerry in the heart, causing him to turn to ash and releasing his victims. The final scenes take place later in Peter's penthouse. Charley and Amy are making love when Peter rushes in, having forgotten his phone. Promising not to look, he grabs his phone and leaves. Charley and Amy resume their love-making.

In the 1985 original Fright Night (1985), (1) Jerry was 1,000 years old, not 400, (2) Jerry was served by a human ghoul named Billy, (3) Peter (not Charley) staked Ed, (4) at the end, it was implied that Ed had survived, (5) Charley was a fan of Peter Vincent and tried to convince Ed that Jerry is a vampire (in this version, it's the other way around), and (6) vampires were able to shape-shift into animals and turn into mist.
