It was at these games that the United States men's hockey team completed what would now be known as the "Miracle on Ice" with a comeback victory against the Soviet Union trailing the Soviets 3-2, team captain Mike Eruzione scored the game winning goal to give the American team a 4-3 victory the Americans would go on to win the gold medal defeating Finland 4-2 their run was documented in the 2004 film "Miracle".
