Exclusive: Film Constellation has boarded sales on Oscar Hudson’s Straight Circle, a dark comedy on the absurdities of conflict, and revealed a first image as principal photography wraps in South Africa.
The work follows two soldiers from opposing nations who are stationed at a shared barrack on a desolate border. As they grapple with their identities, loyalties, and the absurdity of their situation, their isolation slowly gives way to an unfathomable nightmare that will blur the line between friend and foe.
Straight Circle is the feature debut of London-born filmmaker Hudson whose short film Joy in People premiered at BFI London Film Festival and won the Audience Award at Rotterdam IFFR.
He has also won praise for his work directing music videos for Radiohead, Bonobo and James Blake, and for brands including Nike and Apple, and has been awarded a Primetime Emmy, Best Young Director at Cannes Lions and...

Apple Cider Vinegardoesn’t come with a warning label, but once the familiar sounds of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” start playing in the first episode, it’s clear this will be a poisonous tale. Then, as the limited series reaches its crescendo, another pop anthem closes out the final episode: Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire,” a chilling reminder of the bloodsucking predators who walk among us, selling promises of paradise.
The “bloodsucker” at the heart of Apple Cider Vinegar is the character Belle Gibson (Emmy nominee Kaitlyn Dever). But Belle doesn’t fear the sun like other vampires. Instead, in the drama’s closing montage, Belle basks in the sun, squatting next to a swimming pool, thriving compared to characters like Chanelle (Aisha Dee) and Lucy (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) who must attempt to rebuild their lives after falling for Belle’s lies about having cancer. Temple Hill Entertainment has announced that Brittany O’Grady of The White Lotus and It’s What’s Inside is on board to star in their high-concept horror film Monitor – and she’ll be stepping in front of the camera to bring her character to life very soon, because Monitor is scheduled to start filming on March 10th! Production will take place on location in Barcelona and the Canary Islands.
Written and directed by Matt Black and Ryan Polly, the film has the following synopsis: When a group of social media moderators refuse to publish a horrifying video, a demonic creature starts following them across every screen in their lives. Feeding off fear, the creature hunts them down one by one and attacks until it gets what it wants… to be let out beyond the screen.
This marks the feature debut for the filmmaking duo, who have been collaborating on short films for several years.

Agents have been telling us for years now that the pace of the market at Sundance isn’t what it used to be. Maybe it’s time we started taking them seriously. Just as industry people arrived home from Park City last week, everyone checked the proverbial scoreboard and realized not one world premiere feature had been acquired from Sundance. Where are the sales?!?
The next day, Midnight movie “Together” sold in a $17 million worldwide deal to Neon, a number that matches the high mark of last year’s sale of “It’s What’s Inside” to Netflix and puts it in the upper echelon of all-time Sundance deals. It was a true bidding war, with Searchlight Pictures and A24 also in the mix.
Later that day, a journalist at an event asked Netflix’s Bela Bajaria why Sundance was so “dull” and if this was a sign Netflix is changing course on indie movies.

A hallmark of every Sundance Film Festival is the freezing temperatures, trudging through the snow and ice of Park City. But at the 2025 iteration of the festival, that bone-chilling weather has extended to the market, resulting in an unprecedented cold streak.
Six days in, only one film has been sold: Neon picked up the Alison Brie/Dave Franco body horror “Together” on Tuesday, following its rowdy debut Monday night at the Eccles.
“Together” generated the festival’s first real bidding war, as Neon ultimately won out over A24 and Mubi with a low eight-figure offer said to be north of $10 million. The buzz around the film, which stars and is produced by real-life married couple Franco and Brie, offered a brief reminder of the kind of heated market activity that used to be commonplace at Sundance.
But beyond that? Zilch. And it’s got the industry nervous.
Are the movies not good?...

The Oscars are meant to celebrate the best of the year, but they are just as infamous for the movies they ignore. Every year the Academy releases a list of films that can be nominated in most categories (this year’s list features 323 films) and a shorter list for best picture (207 in 2024).
Not all films make the lists. Movies that didn’t open in certain US cities and didn’t show in theaters for long enough, premiered on streaming, screened outside of the year, or didn’t pay the fees aren’t eligible. Then there’s also a slew of genre and low-budget movies from all over the world that just don’t win awards. Some of these omissions are surprising. They have big stars, got some of the best reviews of the year, made money at the box office, or set the streaming world afire. But, in the end,...

While we were eager to tell you last year about Sundance premieres starring Kristen Stewart and Pedro Pascal, the unlikely “Thelma” became the true indie success story of 2024. Unexpected buyer Magnolia Pictures turned the June Squibb film into a hit, opening the doors for other buyers to take their own risks this year.
Heading into 2025, uniqueness is the name of the game, as is picking out the discovery that you won’t see coming, and not necessarily the movie with the big cast, commercial pedigree, or crowdpleaser premise. Last year, we were pretty spot on with “A Real Pain” and “My Old Ass” surviving the long haul, and we were among the few to tell you about “It’s What’s Inside” before Netflix plunked down $17 million to buy it; we were way off on a few others.

“Thelma,” the action comedy starring a 93-year-old June Squibb, sold to Magnolia Pictures out of last year’s Sundance for around $2-3 million and made $12.5 million at the box office. That box office is about $4.5 million less than what Netflix paid for the straight-to-streaming horror title “It’s What’s Inside” at the fest. That movie spent just one week on the streamer’s global Top 10, and without a significant theatrical release.
Looking ahead in 2025, it’s time to start recalibrating what success looks like, and Sundance may be the perfect place to start.
For Magnolia, last year’s “Thelma” turned out to be the best-performing film in the indie distributor’s 23-year history. Magnolia bought the movie in a competitive situation at Sundance 2024 and was an unlikely player to give it a wide release.

Horror in 2024 proved that the genre thrives on reinvention, delivering a lineup as daring as it was unsettling. While the year saw its share of sequels and prequels, what stood out were films that reimagined old tropes with fresh perspectives. From slashers infused with arthouse aesthetics to nuns with evil pregnancies, horror expanded its boundaries. Themes of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom resonated strongly, reflecting societal anxieties in the wake of seismic legal changes, while other films boldly tackled aliens, vampires, fanatics, and class disparity. The year wasn’t without its disappointments, but when horror soared, it truly transcended. Cinephiles flocked to both indie gems and boundary-pushing studio fare, underscoring a collective appetite for narratives that terrify and provoke. So let us take a look at the ten standout English-language horror movies of 2024—movies that not only chilled us to the bone but also made us think.

In a dingy lab somewhere in China, a young girl named Wei (Mohan Liu) watches her father, Liu (Sam Wang), go about his work. He’s developing a new kind of skin graft procedure that he hopes will rid both of them of the large purple birthmarks adorning their faces. And like your average B-movie scientist with a little too much on the line, Liu decides to use himself as a guinea pig. He applies a strange, fleshy substance to his face and then grins triumphantly as it wriggles into life, replacing his birthmark and melding perfectly with the rest of his skin. But Liu’s delight quickly turns to horror as he discovers—like, well, so many B-movie scientists before him—that his invention works a little too well, and with deadly consequences.

In a rare instance of introspection, Dylan (Ben Hunter), a rowdy bro type in his 20s, beams at the possibility that another person might genuinely be offering the kind of friendship he yearns for. A shy smile crosses his face, only for the spell to be immediately broken, leaving him feeling used. It’s a brief, easy-to-miss exchange, but one that evinces the lack of meaningful intimacy between him and his closest mates.
That moment of vulnerability follows a night of insidious games and unsavory revelations that test the bonds among a group of friends and acquaintances during a fateful buck’s party in “Birdeater,” an engrossing horror-laced ensemble piece from Australia that successfully instills uneasiness and discomfort via confident and consistently in-your-face stylistic choices. Hunter remains a scene-stealer throughout thanks to his anger-inducing performance as overbearing Dylan, but it’s the character’s best bud Louie (Mackenzie Fearnley) and...

That list is unsurprisingly topped by Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, which just barely became a 2024 release when it was unleashed in theaters on Christmas Day. How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.
I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.

Love it or hate it, Netflix is still a dominating force in the streaming wars. As of 2024, the platform has 282 million paid subscribers worldwide, with roughly 96 million of those coming from North America alone. That means if you recommend a worthwhile Netflix original movie for someone to check out, there's a good chance they already have a subscription lined up to watch it. And recommendations can be so very crucial, as Netflix constantly cycles through movies and TV shows to the degree that it's easy for a real gem to get lost in the mix.
Many Netflix movies don't wind up in theaters at all, with a few noteworthy exceptions. That means there's typically a small window where a film can make an impact and get some buzz going before it's shifted out of the carousel at the top of the homepage. 2024 had a host of great Netflix originals, from...

Netflix has submitted a total of 32 TV programs for awards consideration at the upcoming Golden Globes, and 20 for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Gold Derby has learned exclusively.
Some of the streamer’s notable TV titles include Season 2 of “Squid Game,” the survival thriller starring Emmy and SAG winner Lee Jung-jae; popular new comedy “Nobody Wants This,” about an agnostic woman (Kristen Bell) and an unconventional rabbi (Adam Brody); and “Baby Reindeer,” the buzzy limited series that recently set the Emmys on fire, going home with six trophies. See the full list of submissions below, broken down by show.
Note that the Golden Globes have lead actor and lead actress categories that are separated by TV genres (drama/comedy/limited), but that the supporting actor and supporting actress races encapsulate all genres. As of last year, the organization also now offers an award for the best stand-up comedy special on television.

Oops, all Netflix! Nobody would dispute that the mega-streaming platform easily leads the pack in terms of total subscribers, brand awareness, and catchy slogans. (Don't tell me that Prime Video and Disney+ haven't been trying to chase the coattails of "Netflix and chill" ever since they first debuted.) Netflix has also thoroughly disrupted the film industry and its conventional reliance on theaters worldwide, taking smash-hit franchises like the "Knives Out" movies and snatching them right out from under Lionsgate's nose ... though it might have met its match with Greta Gerwig insisting on a theatrical release for "The Chronicles of Narnia.

Horror continues to be a major audience draw as a genre, and this year has delivered horror successes like Longlegs, Smile 2, and the critically-acclaimed The Substance. The genre continues to be attractive to filmmakers as horror flicks often feature smaller budgets, but this doesn't deter audiences. Every year, there are a few standout horror hits, and 2022 is certainly no different.
2022 saw the release of the Scream legacy sequel, which revitalized the franchise, and Halloween Ends, which ended that franchise's reboot trilogy. A number of standout original horror movies were also released, including Barbarian, which shocked audiences with its surprising twists and turns, and Smile, which reaped the benefits of a stellar marketing campaign to become a major box office success. Other notable titles include Jordan Peele's Nope, Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Menu, and Men, but the year also delivered two installments of what would become a horror trilogy.

Kate Beckinsale's 2024 spy movie is a streaming success despite its 30% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. The English actress made her feature film debut in 1993 with a brief role in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing and, during the remainder of the 1990s, continued to star in British costume dramas such as Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Emma, and The Golden Bowl. During the early 2000s, Beckinsale starred in films from a variety of genres, including Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor, the romantic comedy Serendipity, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, and Click.
However, since taking on the role of Selene in the Underworld franchise from 2003 to 2016, Kate Beckinsale has become best known for action movies, also including Van Helsing, Whiteout, Contraband, Total Recall, and Jolt. Well, well, well, the writers at Elsbeth are making sure they are one step ahead of viewers’ expectations. Rather than waiting until the finale again, audiences got a genuine murder mystery as a change of pace.
Despite the series’ formulaic approach, with episodic murderers and the typical case-of-the-week format, the hands behind the show continue to find ways to add pink sprinkles of chaos.
Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 3 brought us another suspect we will never forget. And we already know the show isn’t afraid to bring back a familiar face or two.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
And while “Devil’s Night” was an apt title for the Elsbeth episode, how much more fun would it have been if it was “Dude, Where’s My Gun?” or “Eternal Nighttime of the Blacked-Out Mind?”
Elsbeth tends to bring out the camp in people.

Monster High 2 has become a global Netflix hit. The 2023 title is a sequel to the live-action horror-comedy musical movie about a high school for monsters, adapting the toy line of the same name. The movie originally premiered on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ and stars Miia Harris, Ceci Balagot, Nayah Damasen, The Other Two's Case Walker, and Love, Victor star Ana Ortiz. When it premiered on the platform, it didn't register on the Nielsen streaming chart and indeed was viewed less than the then 10-year-old Martin Scorsese movie The Wolf of Wall Street, which was also streaming on Paramount+.
Netflix has now calculated their global Top 10 most-watched English-language movies for the week of October 7 through October 13. Even though it is not available on the streamer in the United States, Monster High 2 landed at No. 8 on the chart with 4.1 million viewers amassing a total of 6.5 million viewing hours. The movie...

Starring Carolyn Bracken, Gwilym Lee, Johnny French, Steve Wall, and Caroline Menton, among others, the Shudder original tells the story of a psychic medium as she attempts to uncover the truth about her sister's murder, with Oddity reviews praising the scares, atmosphere, and filmmaking.
New data from Reelgood now reveals that Oddity ranks as the tenth most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. for the week of October 3 9. Salem's Lot (2024) has become a streaming hit even though the Stephen King adaptation has only a 45% Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by Gary Dauberman, the Max exclusive film is the second adaptation of King's 1975 horror novel, chronicling the story of author Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) as he returns to his hometown and discovers the presence of a blood-thirty vampire. Reviews for Salem's Lot have been mixed from critics since the film's release on October 3, with criticism aimed at the film's lack of scares and surprises.
New data from Reelgood now reveals that Salem's Lot ranks as the second most popular title on streaming overall in the U.S. for the week of October 3 9, beaten only by Nobody Wants This (2024). When looking only at movies on streaming, the King adaptation claims the number one spot. In the overall list, Salem's Lot beats titles like It's What's Inside (2024), The Penguin (2024), and Wolfs (2024). Check...

Slaughterhouse Rules.
Back in mid-September, we began a themed collection of episodes featuring Gay Icons and Anniversaries. Trace and I kicked off the series with a revisit of Jennifer’s Body (listen) before delving into Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Birth (listen), and David Fincher’s Gone Girl (listen) for its 10th anniversary.
Now it’s time to tackle the 50th anniversary of Tobe Hooper‘s classic text, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It’s a film that hardly needs an introduction, but in case folks have never seen it, the film follows a van full of teenagers travelling through Texas to ensure the resting site of a relative hasn’t been disturbed by a recent wave of grave robberies.
Of course what they do is run afoul of a family of men who have resorted to murder and cannibalism following the closure of the slaughterhouse. With masked killer Leatherface doing most of the heavy lifting,...

Netflixs acclaimed horror comedy Its Whats Inside is a better Black Mirror episode than most of the actual Black Mirror episodes from the shows Netflix era. Set at a pre-wedding party, Its Whats Inside takes a mind-bending turn when an estranged guest shows up with a mysterious briefcase and an idea for a party game. The briefcase turns out to be a cutting-edge device that swaps everyones bodies around, and the game entails players having to guess whos been swapped into their body.
Charlie Brookers dystopian anthology series Black Mirror aired its first two seasons and its Christmas special on Channel 4, where its inherent darkness was allowed to flourish. From season 3 onwards, Black Mirror has moved to a new home on Netflix. The Netflix era has delivered a lot more Black Mirror episodes than the Channel 4 era, but the show has also been a lot more hit-and-miss since the transition.

New Netflix thriller It’s What’s Inside turns a party game among friends into a wildly entertaining body-swapping fiasco. The streamer has launched It’s What’s Inside: The Game, giving you the opportunity to experience the body-hopping mayhem for yourself for a limited time.
The game is available to play here, now through October 14, so don’t wait to dive into the body-swap fun.
As for what to expect, “You and your pals will play a virtual game that puts your knowledge of each other and yourself to the test. Using cutting-edge technology, you’ll swap faces and voices with each other as you try to guess who is in whose body. Head-spinning? Absolutely. Nerve-wracking? You bet. But don’t worry, the game is totally safe. Your friendships, however, might not be.”
The game will use your recorded voice and image to re-create the film’s party game.
