In the dead of night, a recently unemployed insomniac wanders the streets of New York discovering a city beyond her wildest imagination. Luci loses her job and times are tougher than ever. Unable to sleep, she begins an after-hours journey embarking on a series of strange encounters as she wanders the dark metropolis. During one unforgettable night, Luci comes face to face with her innermost fears and desires as she tries to find her way back home. Based on a concept by Jenn Dees and Gary King, WHAT'S UP LOVELY is a drama about the struggle to survive the city while battling the enemy within ourselves.

&quot;What&#39;s up lovely&quot; tells the story of an insomniac woman, wandering across New York, following strangers she meets on the road and her constant battle with herself. It is composed in surreal frames and settings and centers around dream-like experiences. I appreciate that this film is not your average low-budget production, following a well-known scheme to gain some production value. Someone had original ideas for this one and you clearly see that throughout the movie. At the same time, the crew tried to be a bit too artsy for my taste. I truly love artsy films, probably more than any other kind of films, but here sometimes it seems forced. While I&#39;m sure that there&#39;s a thoroughly plan behind the story, it sometimes felt quite exchangeable and didn&#39;t seem to fully add up in the end. In my eyes, the film would have benefited from a more stringent story line. During the beginning I also felt a bit distracted by the inner logic. The woman depicted is probably the worst stalker ever to exist, running after people, following them with 20 cm space in between and so on.. That&#39;s just one example. After some time though, it felt more like these logical issues could maybe be there to represent the inner logic of dreams so I&#39;m not sure what to make of it. The same goes for the whole movie. There seems to be an idea, I don&#39;t get it, I see some major critical points, but if you like artsy movies, maybe you&#39;re more lucky, other people seem to like it.

What's Up Lovely

What&#39;s Up Lovely presents a compelling portrait of a woman coming to grips with loss, and insomnia, in the dead of night. Jenn Dees demands attention, and the film would not have had the impact it did without a performance as gripping and authentic as she delivered. What&#39;s Up Lovely is a one woman show, and as such, she was the right woman for the role. Gary&#39;s direction made wonderful use of New York. A city that seemingly never sleeps appeared to be nearly uninhabited, with the exception of the unusual stranger in the story. The hauntingly beautiful score worked to further enhance the tone of the film. Gary has created a unique visual experience that is a treat to watch, and warrants additional viewings.
