There aren’t many places where one might encounter two Avengers, three chameleons and a hot priest. But that’s precisely who gathered in mid-November for THR’s Actor Roundtable at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica: Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Colman Domingo (Rustin) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers). They have among them 14 Emmy nominations (five of which led to wins), six Tony nominations (one victory) and six Oscar nominations, with each still on the hunt for his first statuette. Considering that the last Oscar winners for best actor and supporting actor first appeared on this roundtable, there’s a strong chance the best is yet to come for this starry sextet.
There are a lot of connections at this table, some of which you guys may not realize because they happened so early in your career.

Winter is the new fall this Covid-impacted TV season. Because of the lengthy production shutdown in the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, Fox and the CW delayed the rollout of their regular fall 2020 lineups, and a slew of other series intended for fall 2020 debut also are slated to premiere in early 2021 instead.
With uncertainty surrounding production as Covid outbreaks frequently pause filming, a number of premiere dates are still Tbd, as networks and streamers often wait until last minute to set debuts so they are sure than the new seasons would be completed successfully.
That said, here’s our annual list of midseason/winter premiere dates for new and returning series. It covers hundreds of broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting from today through March 31 and includes shows that were on hiatus and some one-off specials such as awards shows.
Please send any additions or adjustments to erik@deadline.

Permitting agency FilmLA has made an extraordinary pitch to producers to remain in “strict” compliance” with Covid-19 safety protocols as California tightens overall regulations.
The agency made the announcement Tuesday in the wake of the new limited stay-at-home order issued by the state of California, which took effect on Nov. 21 in order to pause all non-essential work and gatherings from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. FilmLA noted that California has viewed workers supporting the film, television and commercial production industry —who number in the hundreds of thousands in Greater Los Angeles — as “essential” for the state’s critical infrastructure.
“FilmLA is unaware of any plans to revisit or modify the state’s essential worker definitions, but new stay-at-home orders this week remind us that the Covid-19 pandemic’s progress is unpredictable, and new business regulation can affect any industry at the state, county or city level, at any time,...

Leona Lewis is bringing holiday cheer -- to your ears!
The British songstress is back with a new version of her original Christmas song, “One More Sleep,” as part of Amazon Music’s holiday playlist, “All Is Bright,” and Et has the exclusive premiere of the reworked song. Lewis originally recorded “One More Sleep” with a full band for her 2013 album, Christmas, With Love. The new version is stripped down and, according to Lewis, takes inspiration from the girl groups of yesteryear.
“Doing this version with Amazon was really interesting, because it went back to the original style of how we had it in the beginning,” Lewis says. “We stripped everything away and made it more like a ‘60s ballad-style. It has a bit of a Supremes feel to it, but it still has those Motown elements, because that is what it was originally inspired by.”

Love them or loathe them, holiday comedies are a cornerstone of Hollywood’s yearly release plan. Sure, they may not scale the box office heights of the summer tentpoles, but with every year that passes, another truckload of festive-themed features light up the silver screen with varying results.
In 2016, that collection will comprise the likes of Bad Santa 2, Almost Christmas and Why Him?, the latter of which is arriving by way of Fox.
Due for release on December 25, the first and decidedly Nsfw trailer has now surfaced, pitting James Franco against Bryan Cranston’s doting father. Having wrapped his daughter in cotton wool for the best part of two decades, Cranston’s Ned is giving a stern wake-up call upon meeting her new love interest, Laird, an Internet celebrity that looks to be James Franco doing his best James Franco impression.

Enjoy holiday-themed films with a lot of big actors? Have we got a movie for you. Coming to theaters this fall is Almost Christmas. The all-star cast includes Omar Epps, Danny Glover, Mo’Nique, Gabrielle Union and more. Check out the first trailer for Universal Pictures’ upcoming comedy now.
A new comedy from writer/director David E. Talbert (Baggage Claim) and producer Will Packer (Ride Along, Think Like a Man series, This Christmas), Almost Christmas tells the festive story of a beloved patriarch who asks his family for one gift this holiday season: to get along. If they can honor that wish and spend five days under the same roof without killing one another, it will be a Christmas miracle.
Sounds a little reminiscent of last year’s Love The Coopers. That 2015 film followed the Cooper clan as four generations of extended family came together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration.

With his starring role in the Marvel superhero blockbuster Ant-Man, Paul Rudd seems set to embark on a new phase in his career: action hero. But there's a scene late in the movie when, caught kissing another character, his ex-con-turned-insect-controlling-good-guy Scott Lang starts to faux-blame the deed on his partner before gracefully skirting away. It's a classic Rudd moment, and a reminder of what he brings to the table even when he's playing a comic-book character.

Lucinda Williams Talks About Her New Album, Adapting Her Dad's Poem and Her Favorite Christmas Music
Ever since her Grammy-winning fifth album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, introduced her to mainstream audiences in 1988, Lucinda Williams has been at the top of the nebulously-defined genre of "alt-country." Her instantly-recognizable voice and unique interpretation of country, blues and folk traditions have made her an indispensable part of the scene: If you didn't recognize her forlorn "Are You Alright?" in one of the key scenes of True Detective's first season, you probably cocked your head and said, "Who is that?" anyway. Williams released her 11th album, Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone, this year, and contributed a...

Sinners And Saints: Melfi’s Debut an Unobtrusive Crowd Pleaser
For a few moments during its initial set-up, Theodore Melfi’s directorial debut, St. Vincent, seems on the verge of stumbling into schmaltzy cliché, giving us yet another one of those formulas where a tirelessly inappropriate old man mentors a nubile, naïve young boy in the ways of life. An arresting cast doesn’t hurt, and some pleasing performances smooth over some of the film’s more rudimentary life lessons and gimmicky assay into the nature of sainthood.

There’s a perpetual oddness to the tone and feel of Phil Morrison’s dark (or maybe just dreary) comedy All is Bright, which sees Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd as two friends in love with the same woman and a desire to start living their lives on the straight and narrow through the honest work of selling Christmas trees in New York City. It’s a premise that doesn’t sound inherently funny, and really the only flashes of comedy that escape the cold dense center of the film are hard to laugh at with everything else in the film considered (including an ending you might see coming as things start to get too happy for the film’s cynical nature). And if the bleakness of the story isn’t enough to convince you that Rudd and Giamatti aren’t their typical likable selves here and you still decide to give it a try,...

A pregnant teenager flees life with her drug-addicted mother and ends up living on the street before being welcomed into her first real home in this gripping first trailer for Gimme Shelter, an extraordinary tale of survival and redemption inspired by actual events. Starring Vanessa Hudgens, the film will be in theaters January 24, 2014.
For 16-year-old Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Vanessa Hudgens), life has been a constant struggle to overcome the harsh reality of a subsistence existence with her abusive mother, June (Rosario Dawson), and June’s string of lowlife boyfriends. When she finds herself pregnant and alone, Apple temporarily takes shelter with her biological father, Tom (Brendan Fraser), a wealthy Wall Streeter living in a New Jersey mansion with his wife Joanna (Stephanie Szostak) and two young children. But Apple’s inability to adjust to her new circumstances, and her refusal to terminate her pregnancy, soon force her back onto the streets.
