Holland Taylor has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s untitled brother comedy series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
The upcoming project is executive produced by David West Read, who is known for “The Big Door Prize” and “Schitt’s Creek.” Read will also serve as the showrunner for the series.
The 10-episode half-hour comedy reunites Harrelson and McConaughey after their award-winning turn on the first season of HBO’s “True Detective.” Harrelson and McConaughey’s friendship is tested when their families try to live together on a Texas ranch owned by McConaughey’s character. The series has been described as an “odd couple love story” by press releases.
The upcoming series will see Taylor playing the mother of McConaughey’s character, known as Ma Mac. This isn’t the first time the beloved actor has collaborated with Apple TV+. Previously, Taylor starred as Cybil Richards on “The Morning Show.

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

A one-season sci-fi series has been cancelled by Apple TV+ despite its promising cliffhanger ending. For the past couple of months, there have been relatively few major renewals and cancellations. But with the year rushing to a close, streamers have also been in a sprint to announce some last-minute decisions.
Just this week, FX cancelled the Jeff Bridges action thriller series The Old Man, which did not quite capture the same attention as its buzzy first season after an extended break between episodes. Although it had long been presumed dead, after failing to make a splash with subscribers, Netflix made it official and axed Girls5eva after three seasons. It's not all bad news, with Hulu picking up Tell Me Lies for another run after the young adult adaption grew its audience. However, for one sci-fi standout, it's the end of the road.

Nobody Wants This is the almost saccharine sitcom we’ve all been waiting for. Well, at least I have. A little while ago Netflix gave us One Day, a revolutionary romance show, if you ask me, because in the social media age, it’s hard to find something that gets so much positive reception from both critics and the people. Now, I do think Nobody Wants This will garner divided opinions, specifically because it’s quite a rollercoaster, but for the most part, if you like good chemistry and actually fun dialogue, then this show is going to leave you thrilled. They say opposites attract, but when the opposites are a Jewish rabbi and an agnostic sex podcaster, it’s hard for anyone to believe it’s possible. The show was created by Erin Foster, who took notes from her own life experiences finding love with a Jewish partner, and I’ve got to say,...

You might say there’s a haunting pattern when it comes to season finales of Ghosts, the hit CBS series that serves you emotions with a side of morbid humor: in last May’s third season cliffhanger, a spirit from Woodstone Manor abruptly disappeared from the property. Thankfully, fans won’t have to spend too much more time wondering what happened to Revolutionary Isaac Higgintoot (Brandon Scott Jones) after he broke off his wedding with Nigel (John Hartman) and was pulled into the dirt by his old friend Patience — the ghost who still holds a grudge from Isaac leaving her underground in the 1800s. “We’re going to find out what her plans with Isaac are. We’re going to deal with that in the beginning,” promises showrunner Joe Wiseman, indicating that we’ll be seeing a lot more of the Puritan ghost played by The Big Door Prize’s Mary Holland.

Statistically, you aren’t watching AppleTV+ — earlier this year, Matthew Belloni’s newsletter Puck reported that viewership on the platform is just 0.29 percent, according to Nielsen — so when I tell you its sitcoms are endemically friction-free, I realize you kind of have to take my word for it.
Having honed this opinion via immersion in, among others, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, Palm Royale, Loot and The Big Door Prize (linked above), enduring 10 episodes of Apple’s new “dark comedy” Sunny wasn’t exactly how I wanted to kick off my summer. I guess I can’t say it pleasantly surprised me, but I definitely was not expecting that (a) one of the world’s biggest computer companies has brought us such a prickly, unsettling vision of our possible future living with A.I., and (b) that Apple has made a new comedy that isn’t allergic to conflict.

Despite high praise and a cliffhanger ending, Apple TV+ will not be renewing The Big Door Prize for its season 3. The sci-fi comedy was based on M.O. Walsh's book, but, unfortunately, will end with a cliffhanger. Unless Big Door is picked up by another network, it is likely dead.
The Big Door Prize season 3 has officially been scrapped by Apple TV+. Inspired by M.O. Walsh's book, the sci-fi comedy first premiered in 2023 and follows a small town that has forever been changed by the appearance of a vague and cryptic Morpho machine. Big Door enjoyed rave reviews and seemed prime for a return after the season 2 cliffhanger ending, which featured Dusty (Chris ODowd) realizing that he has been trapped in a mysterious blue room. Season 3 was expected to continue that storyline.
Despite the cliffhanger, Big Door will not be returning to Apple TV+ for any potential future seasons.

The Morpho machine is shutting down. Apple TV+ has canceled “The Big Door Prize” after two seasons, Variety has confirmed. The series, from Skydance Television and Cj Enm/Studio Dragon, ended its Season 2 run on June 12.
“The Big Door Prize” comes from writer David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”) and is based on the M.O. Walsh novel of the same name. The whimsical series earned solid nods in Season 1, which aired in spring 2023 and starred Chris O’Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis, Josh Segarra, Ally Maki, Djouliet Amara, Sammy Fourlas, Crystal Fox and Damon Gupton.
The series centers on the residents of Deerfield, a small town that is upended when a mysterious machine appears in the general store, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential.

We’re never going to know what the next, next stage is now! The Big Door Prize has been canceled after two seasons at Apple TV+. “It is a beloved show, and while we know Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger, we are just not moving forward with a third season at this time,” a rep for the streaming service told TVLine in a statement. And what a cliffhanger that was in the Season 2 finale! The series follows the residents of a small town forever changed when the mysterious Morpho machine appears, promising to reveal everyone’s true potential, and leading to them changing jobs, rethinking relationships, and questioning long-held beliefs. Season 2 sees them moving on to the next stage. Then, at the end of it, following what seemed to be a permanent split after a season of “selfploration” for Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), he returns to the...

Chris O’Dowd and the residents of Deerfield will not be back for new adventures after Apple TV+ opted not to renew the series for a third season, Deadline has confirmed.
The series, which received an early Season 2 pick-up in April 2023, comes from David West Read. It tells the story of a small town that is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears in the general store, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential.
Starring O’Dowd as Dusty Hubbard, a seemingly content, cheerful family man and high school teacher, who watches everyone around him reevaluate their life choices and ambitions — based on the machine’s printouts — and is forced to question whether he is truly as happy as he once thought.
While he remains skeptical of the machine, his wife, Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), indulges in the dream that there’s something bigger out there for her. Like many of Deerfield’s residents,...

The characters on Land of Women are, generally speaking, not having a great time. Gala (Eva Longoria) is a posh New Yorker who’s just discovered that her feckless husband (James Purefoy’s Fred) is $15 million in the hole to loan sharks. Fearing for her life, she flees to rural Spain with her teenage daughter, Kate (Victoria Bazúa), and mother, Julia (Carmen Maura). Neither of them are thrilled to have their lives upended at a moment’s notice, and once there, they’re only temporarily out of danger anyway.
But if the events of the Apple TV+ series are stressful for its characters, they’re downright relaxing for us as viewers. Once the family has arrived in La Muga, the crime-thriller plot machinations take a back seat to a sun-dappled fantasy of small-town life, cut with tart humor and some minor soap operatics. When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 73 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 22 contenders from last year. As was the case last year, each member’s selections may not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which will be eight in this case.
On its quest for a second consecutive victory here, “The Bear” will have to fend off just two of its seven 2023 rivals: “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Last year’s remaining contenders that did not air episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 eligibility period are “Barry,” “Jury Duty,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ted Lasso,” and “Wednesday,” the last of which is the only one known to have a new season in the works.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Door Prize Season 2 finale “Deercoming.”] Each stage of the Morpho machine just leaves us with more questions, and the latest now leaves us really needing The Big Door Prize to be renewed for Season 3. Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) reach a breaking point in their marriage following their selfploration this season. Hana (Ally Maki) goes looking for answers after starting to wonder if she should have used the Morpho machine at the bar in which she worked before coming to Deerfield. And Dusty’s determination to get answers from the Morpho machine, using the Guide card (Colton’s) leaves him in quite the position at the end of the season. Below, the stars and creator David West Read break down the key moments from the Season 2 finale and ponder what could be ahead if the series is renewed. Where Is Dusty at the End of Season 2? Alright, hold your horses if you’re on here. The Big Door Prize hasn’t announced a new season as of yet, but we can keep our hopes up based on that very intriguing and simultaneously alarming last episode of season 2. While the show is a sci-fi comedy that tells the stories of the townspeople of Deerfield, it primarily revolves around a family of three, namely Dusty, Cass, and Trina. While the first season focuses on this new machine that arrives in this town and completely disrupts it, the second season takes on more of a family drama sort of approach. It was never very scientific, but I suppose since it’s got what looks like a strange space machine on it, we can’t deny it the right to the genre; however, in season 2, it genuinely feels like the machine is simply there to present a typical sitcom set-up in a new light.

For the longest time, Dusty’s been slowly deteriorating as a character that we enjoy watching. He goes from charming husband and loving father to obnoxiously rude partner and absent father slowly over the course of the show, which is more than disappointing. Specifically, because it’s the kind of life arc one doesn’t want to experience, going from somewhat perfect to someone most people despise. It’s not Dusty who’s the problem here; it’s more about how he ended up like this and why it changed him so much.
I suppose the expectation you might have of finding your potential is more vast than your actual potential, leaving one supremely disappointed. The final episode of The Big Door Prize season 2 is both hilarious and somewhat poignant. It’s got a lot of revelations, specifically around Hana, and what they mean for the Morpho. Here’s me...

When the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Ali Wong and Pedro Pascal both had the honor of being included in multiple performance lineups. She made history as the first newcomer to the acting categories recognized for both live action (“Beef”) and voice (“Tuca & Bertie”) work, while he became the first actor nominated for three programs on his initial Emmy outing. These achievements made them the newest members of a group of 26 people who earned their first two (or three) acting Emmy nominations in a single year.
Wong’s eventual Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress win for “Beef” made her the seventh person in this bunch to succeed on one of her bids. The first was Robert Cummings, who received 1955’s Best Single Performance by an Actor prize for “Twelve Angry Men” and simultaneously lost for his regular lead turn on “My Hero.”

What if a mysterious machine allowed you to reveal your life’s potential? What if said machine was an arcade-style machine sporting the curious name Morpho located in a small town convenience store? What if the streaming powers stretched such a concept throughout a ten-episode AppleTV+ season, with the potential for more? Such a premise acted as the connective tissue of “The Big Door Prize, “ based on a novel and a passable attempt at light comedy with semi-philosophical notions laced throughout as the residents of Deerfield contend with the machine’s appearance and what exactly the card emerging from a slot below means to each of them.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Door Prize Season 2 Episode 9 “Un-Selfploration.”] The Big Door Prize Season 1 ended with the tease of a “next stage” of the Morpho machine, which has come to Deerfield and ostensibly revealed everyone’s true potential. And now, in the penultimate episode, there’s the tease of more to come after that. Dusty (Chris O’Dowd), upon ending the “selfploration” with Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), has to end things with Alice (Justine Lupe) and does so quite awkwardly with a Thank You card. She then reveals that he was in her vision (the next stage of the Morpho), and he becomes pretty much obsessed with getting answers. She shares that what she saw (he gave her the push she needed to jump out of a plane) made her think that the real Dusty would help her somehow. Then, Dusty begins to wonder if maybe she was in ...

‘The Big Door Prize’ Season 2 Episode 9 Recap & Ending Explained: Are Dusty And Cass Happy Together?
The penultimate episode of The Big Door Prize is rather melancholic for fans of the first season of the show. I suppose that, when I talk about these fans, I’m referring to myself, but it seems like change is inevitable, which makes me quite sad. Can a machine really tell us what our potential is? Is it fair to change our lives drastically simply based on a cartoon vision from a machine that popped out of nowhere? I’m not quite certain I’d do it, but of course, there would be no “Big Door Prize” without everyone’s trust in the Morpho. As it goes, it’s always the young ones who have to stand by and see the adults devolving in such a situation. With only one episode left in the series, I do hope the people of Deerfield realize that their potential doesn’t come from...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Door Prize Season 2 Episode 4 “Storytellers.”] The Big Door Prize, with its latest episode, not only offers more information about the blue dots that have appeared on some people’s backs—Hana (Ally Maki), though she’s never used the Morpho machine, has had them for a long time—but also shows how someone loses them. “Storytellers” flashes back to when Mr. Johnson (Patrick Kerr) was younger and met the repairman who would come by the shop to fix a broken machine … and the two had plans for dinner, only the other man didn’t show up. Through the Morpho machine, he confronts his problem—a pixelated version of the man offers up excuses for why he didn’t come—and acknowledges he’s been blaming himself. Are you ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Actor? Before you do, be sure to scroll through our photo gallery showcasing the men who are most likely to earn slots in the 76th annual lineup. Naturally, “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White is widely expected to achieve a second consecutive victory and thereby maintain his perfect Emmys record.
White would be the fourth actor in 10 years to earn this specific award for both of his show’s first two seasons, following Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis.
The only other 2023 comedy actor nominee in the running again this year is Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”). His costar and 2022 opponent, Steve Martin, is looking to make a comeback, as are six-time contender Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Jon Cryer, who won in 2012 for “Two and a Half Men” and now headlines “Extended Family.”

There was a time not so long ago when limited series were just that: limited. In a post-“Big Little Lies” existence, however, series are limited only until a network executive decides they’re not. For now, FX’s critically acclaimed “Shōgun,” a striking 10-episode historical epic about warring factions in Japan, remains a limited series, having this week reached the end of its source material, James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. The series finale, “A Dream of a Dream,” is now streaming on Hulu, and after picking up in the aftermath of Mariko’s (Anna Sawai) death, manages to complete its narrative arc in emotionally satisfying fashion.
Since its debut in late February, the endlessly compelling (and surprisingly funny) series has captivated viewers, reminding us of the thrills of event TV. Each episode was bigger than the one that came before it, right up until the end.

But what also makes Hana stand apart from the others is that she never used the Morpho machine. Is that something she regrets? “I think Hana’s just a...
