Joan Plowright, the distinguished actress of the post-war British stage whose considerable skill as a performer was at times eclipsed by her fame as the third and last wife of Laurence Olivier, has died. She was 95.

Plowright died on Jan. 16 surrounded by family in her native U.K. A statement from the family released on Friday to the BBC said: “It is with great sadness that the family of Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, inform you that she passed away peacefully on January 16 2025 surrounded by her family at Denville Hall aged 95.”

It added: “She enjoyed a long and illustrious career across theatre, film and TV over seven decades until blindness made her retire. She cherished her last 10 years in Sussex with constant visits from friends and family, filled with much laughter and fond memories. The family are deeply grateful to Jean Wilson and all those involved in her personal care over many years.

Netflix has revealed that it will stream a documentary series chronicling three generations of India’s Roshan family and their contributions to Hindi-language cinema. The series marks the first time the family has offered an in-depth look at their entertainment dynasty.

The documentary traces the family’s journey from patriarch Roshan Lal Nagrath (known professionally as Roshan), through his sons, actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan (the “Krrish” franchise) and composer Rajesh Roshan (“Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai”), and grandson, Bollywood megastar Hrithik Roshan (“War”), examining their collective impact on Indian film through music, directing and acting.

Industry veteran Shashi Ranjan (“Dobara”) directs and co-produces alongside Rakesh Roshan. The series features interviews with colleagues and peers discussing the family’s legacy in Hindi cinema.

Tiger Baby, the production company founded by celebrated Indian filmmakers Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, is making strides in the unscripted space with a slate of documentaries and series that aim to spotlight untold Indian stories.

The company has just unveiled Taira Malaney’s “Turtle Walker,” a documentary chronicling the extraordinary journey of conservationist Satish Bhaskar, who walked nearly the entire coast of India in his efforts to protect sea turtles. Akhtar says, “He’s such a hero that doesn’t think he’s a hero. He just walked nearly the entire coast of India, which helped the sea turtle not go into extinction. It stars….take a deep breath…Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan (pontificating as though reading lines at an acting workshop), Kareena Kapoor (love her exuberance but clueless as to how she is qualified to speak on the greatest writers of Indian cinema except that she danced to Helen’s Yeh Mera Dil in the Don remake), Mahesh Bhatt, Helen, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan…phew!…and above all Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, so freed from the rigors of etiquettes, so liberating in their honesty, it is a pleasure getting to know them through this docu-series even for someone like yours truly who knows them from before.

British actor Shirley Anne Field, whose long career included memorable performances in such 1960s classic Angry Young Men genre dramas as Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and Alfie — as well as a pivotal, several-month stint on the NBC soap Santa Barbara — died Sunday, Dec. 10, of natural causes. She was 87.

Her family announced her passing In a statement to the BBC. “It is with great sadness that we are sharing the news that Shirley Anne Field passed away peacefully on Sunday… surrounded by her family and friends. Shirley Anne will be greatly missed and remembered for her unbreakable spirit and her amazing legacy spanning more than five decades on stage and screen.”

Indian studio Excel Entertainment’s founders Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar have revealed a robust upcoming production slate.

Up next is “Fukrey 3,” the next instalment of the hit comedy-crime franchise directed by Mrighdeep Lamba, which is due a theatrical release Sept. 28. Action-drama “Agni,” directed by Rahul Dholakia, is in the works and due a 2024 release. “Ground Zero,” directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar, is currently in post-production and is based on a true-life story. Comedy-drama “Madgaon Express,” the directing debut of actor Kunal Kemmu, is also in post and Ravi Udyawar’s action-thriller “Yudhra” is in the works. “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan,” an urban friendship saga directed by Arjun Varain Singh, starring Ananya Panday, Adarsh Gourav and Siddhant Chaturvedi, is complete.

On the streaming front, “Dabba Cartel,” a story of five housewives who run a high-stakes secret cartel, which is Excel’s first show for Netflix, has just started filming.
