Alex Zamm originally cast Carlos Alazraqui to provide the voice of Papi for the sequel and even had his lines recorded. Alazraqui once lent his voice to Gidget, the Taco Bell Chihuahua Dog who appeared in Taco Bell advertisements from the late 90's and early 2000's. But Zamm thought that some fans might find it disappointing not to have George Lopez reprising his role as Papi, so he gave it a second thought and asked Lopez to return to voice Papi in the sequel, in which he agreed to.
Grey Griffin was considered for taking over Drew Barrymore as the voice of Chloe, as Barrymore did not wan't to return for the sequel for unknown reasons. But DeLisle was busy working on other movies and tv shows.
This is the first Beverly Hills Chihuahua film to be shot in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, unlike the first film that was produced in 2.35:1.
This movie marks the second time that Elaine Hendrix played a villainous character in a Disney film. The first villain she played was soon-to-be evil stepmother Meredith Blake in The Parent Trap (1998).
