In the past decade or so, the television movie has been thought to possibly be dead. But don’t tell that to producer Sam Haskell, who won an Emmy for producing the 2021 television film “Dolly Parton’s Christmas On the Square.” In an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby (watch above), Haskell declares, “The TV movie is back!” He is back in the Emmy race this season as the executive producer of two films: “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” for Peacock and “A Waltons Thanksgiving” for The CW.
Both of Haskell’s films focus on the joy of the holiday season. For “A Waltons Thanksgiving,” a reimagining of the classic, Emmy-winning series,, the focus is on the Walton family encountering a troubled youth who will change the family forever. In “Mountain Magic Christmas” the focus is on the inimitable Dolly Parton and her struggle to put on a Christmas show that will lift audiences’ spirits.

When Richard Thomas first played the role of John-Boy Walton over 50 years ago, he thought that he would be the one reading the narration in the show. That turned out to be more of a dream, as it was quickly decided that the show’s creator and writer, Earl Hamner Jr., would be the one performing the narration. “However, 50 years later, I get to do the narration,” declares Thomas in an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby about “The Waltons: Homecoming.”
The CW Network film is a reimagining of “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” the 1971 television film that first introduced audiences to the Walton family. Thomas played the role of eldest son John-Boy in both that film and the subsequent long-running drama series that followed, “The Waltons.” The drama earned 13 Emmys over the course of its nine year run, including a Best Drama Actor win for Thomas in 1973. “It’s a daunting thing to carry on the Earl Hamner Jr. legacy,” declares Jim Strain about the task of bring a new incarnations of The Waltons to television. Strain served as writer and co-executive producer of the 2021 television film “The Waltons: Homecoming.” In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Strain talks about his love of the original series and the challenges of reimagining the characters for a new audience.
The new telefilm is an adaptation of 1971’s “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story” which first introduced viewers to the Walton family. That film’s success spawned the Emmy-winning drama “The Waltons,” which ran for nine seasons and spawned a number of reunion films. This new reimagining for The CW stars Bellamy Young as matriarch Olivia Walton and Logan Shroyer as eldest son John-Boy. Richard Thomas, who earned an Emmy for playing John-Boy in the original series, serves as the new film’s narrator.

Since the 1960s, Emmy voters have honored made-for-television films with the Best TV Movie award. Unlike the continuing program categories, this one is not bound to genre restrictions. This typically leads to diverse lineups of films, and it appears this year’s will be no different.
HBO is the most prolific network in the category’s history, having produced 22 winners from 76 nominations. The most recent of these victories came in 2020 for “Bad Education.” After losing with “Oslo” last year, they are back in the hunt again with the HBO Max films “The Fallout” and “The Survivor.”
Since the academy gave the 2021 prize to “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” they may feel compelled to award “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” “Christmas in Tune,” or “The Waltons: Homecoming” this time. The former is a continuation of NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” while the latter is a remake of the 1971 holiday film that led to CBS’s “The Waltons.

“It represented a kind of happiness that looked promising and real and accessible,” argues Gentry Akens about the appeal of “The Waltons.” Akens served as production designer of “The Waltons: Homecoming,” a 2021 holiday film that is a reimagining of the original 1971 movie that introduced audiences to the Walton family. That original film spawned the classic CBS drama that ran from 1972 to 1981 and won 13 Emmys. This new television film stars Bellamy Young as matriarch Olivia Walton and Logan Shroyer as John-Boy. “I feel like it’s something that’s really needed during this time,” declares Tena Clark, one of the composers for the television film “The Waltons: Homecoming.” The film is a remake of 1971’s “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” the television movie that spawned the CBS drama that ran for nine seasons and won 13 Emmy awards. Check out our exclusive video interview with Clark and co-composer Tim Heintz above.
The project came to the composers through their friendship with the film’s executive producers Sam Haskell and Hudson Hickman. “We all have something very strong in common, and that is that we’re all from Mississippi. Though the composers were excited about the opportunity — both were fans of the original series — they were initially concerned with the short time frame in which they had to work. “I loved ‘The Waltons’ as a kid, and every time on Thursday that we heard the music, we all rushed to the living room to sit down in front of the television,” reveals Sam Haskell. He returned to the nostalgia of his childhood favorite series to produce the popular TV movie “The Waltons: Homecoming,” which aired this past November on The CW Network. In our recent webchat he adds, “Two and a half years ago, we started working on the rights, going to the family. Earl Hamner‘s wife Jane is now in her 90s, and they have all these attorneys around them protecting it. I spoke to everyone single one of them.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The ratings are in for Sunday, and it was a good night for The CW.
The network aired The Waltons Homecoming, which managed 960,000 total viewers.
This total viewer tally marks a strong night in total viewers for the network that has been struggling in that department this season.
The demo tally came in at a 0.1, which is on par with what everything else on the network has been doing this season.
Will the movie lead to a full-fledged series? Probably not, but it could lead to more movies set in The Waltons universe.
The special came in well ahead of The Legends of the Hidden Temple reboot on the night this season.
Over on CBS, The Equalizer had 5.6 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating in the demo.
The numbers were way down from recent results, but the series aired an hour later than usual.

The Walton family is back for the CW’s The Waltons’ Homecoming, premiering Nov. 28, and Richard Thomas — the original John Boy Walton — is celebrating the new chapter. Thomas will serve as the narrator on Homecoming while passing the baton to Logan Shroyer, 2021’s John Boy.
Thomas reflected on what the world was like when the original CBS series about faith and family aired from 1971-82 and why now is the perfect time to bring it back.
“When we did the series originally, this country, we were very split because of all the issues going on.” He said during a press Zoom chat Wednesday. “The line went right down the middle of the dinner table, a lot of the time. It was the beginning of a sort of balkanization where the demographic was split within the household. There were more televisions. So one of the great things about the show was that it brought people together.
