Coming of age can be difficult. You want to prove yourself, but you’re not entirely sure who you are yet. What is important to you? What really matters? How are you going to make yourself noticed? And will anyone pay attention?
These are questions that are often the crux of coming-of-age films, in the horror genre and beyond. Young characters trying to find their place in the world, whether that be the small town Oregon of Stand By Me, or the monstrous life opening up to Izzy in Hellbender. These films always see a character at a turning point, one foot in childhood and one in adulthood, trying to figure out where their next steps will take them. In Bloody Axe Wound, that path happens to be littered with dead bodies.
Abby Bladecut (Sari Arambulo) is going through typical teenager stuff. She is pushing boundaries, asserting her independence, and...

The Adams Family is a unique collective of filmmakers who have crafted some of the most fascinating indie horror films of recent years. Driven by a creative passion and close-knit family spirit, John and Toby Adams, along with their daughters, have developed a devoted following with their insightful, atmospheric works like Hellbender and Where the Devil Roams.
In their latest feature, Hell Hole, we find the family branching out in bold new directions. For the first time, they filmed on location abroad, capturing shades of Serbian history and landscape to tell their story. With access to more resources, they’ve also scaled up various production elements for what is certainly their most ambitious monster movie to date.

Hell Hole begins in 1814, somewhere in Serbia, where a bunch of Napoleon’s troops are lost and starving. A local woman wordlessly appears and offers them a horse. Since they aren’t in a position to look a gift horse in the mouth, they accept, and get ready to have their first meal in ages. Unfortunately for them, the gift horse is actually a Trojan Horse carrying a parasitic creature that appears to spread by sodomizing a potential host.
In modern-day Serbia, a fracking operation run by Emily and her foreman John finds itself cut off when the only road connecting them to civilization floods. With nothing else to do the crew, which also includes Emily’s nephew Teddy and a pair of...

Horror has an official first family and their last name is Adams. No not that one. You might be thinking of the Addams Family. They don’t make movies, they’re fictional characters and they’re nowhere near as cool as the Adams Family.
John Adams and Toby Poser, and their daughters Zelda and Lulu, have been making independent films as a family for over a decade under their production company Wonder Wheel Productions. The Adams Family ventured into the horror genre for the first time with their film The Hatred (2018), which tells the story of a young girl who brings a soldier back from the dead to unleash hell on earth. And just like that, they were hooked on horror.
The Adams Family’s early films like Rumblestrips (2013) and Knuckle Jack (2014), were usually case studies of outcasts, who were struggling to find some kind of normalcy and acceptance in...

The creative output of the Adams Family seems to be endless, and something as simple as a long road trip is enough to inspire their next big movie idea. It hasn’t even been a full rotation around the sun since the release of their last feature Where The Devil Roams, but husband and wife team John Adams and Toby Poser still somehow managed to make another, Hell Hole. The Adams proved to be experts in crafting witchy and supernatural horrors with The Deeper You Dig and Hellbender, but this time, they’re trying out something different with a creature feature far from the comforts of their home country.
Americans Emily (Toby Poser) and John (John Adams) are overseeing the beginning stages of an oil fracking operation in the Serbian countryside. They’re joined by Emily’s nephew and camp cook, Teddy, a duo of Slovenian environmental scientists, Sofija and...

The Adams Family, an actual family unit of filmmakers comprised of father John Adams, mother Tobey Poser, and their daughters, quickly established a punk rock DIY spirit, wearing multiple hats each on films The Deeper You Dig, Hellbender, and last year’s Where the Devil Roams. That continues in their latest, Hell Hole, an ambitious ode to the classic creature feature. It’s not the gory creature effects that elevate a classic setup in this scrappy effort, though it certainly helps. It’s the way the Adams Family stretch their creative muscles further, opting for a fun, zany creature feature with a heavy metal attitude and dry humor.
Hell Hole opens in an unexpected place: Serbian territory in 1814, where French soldiers fighting for Napoleon Bonaparte (including one played by Subspecies‘ Anders Hove) are starving and desperate for food. A gift horse is literally trotted out to them by a mysterious woman,...

It’s festival season and no festival is quite the same without a new film from Team Adams. The minds who brought us Hellbender, The Deeper You Dig and Where the Devil Roams are back with something new, slimy, and a ton of fun. Having enjoyed their last few outings, I was excited to see what Hell Hole would bring. There is something unique about the Adams’ brand of low-budget filmmaking in that audiences have learned to expect the unexpected. And that continues to be the case here. Hell Hole has all of the things we have come to enjoy from this team of filmmakers - a solid story, creative filmmaking, a kick-ass soundtrack, and DIY filmmaking at its finest. But it also sees the creatives breaking new ground and trying something new.
This time around, John Adams and Toby Poser share directing duties, and co-wrote the script with Lulu Adams.

With Hell Hole, the Catskills-based filmmaking collective known as the Adams family takes its first wobbly baby steps outside its homegrown horror comfort zone. Trading the group’s signature brand of lyrical, self-reflective terror for rambling, environmentalist sci-fi story set among a fracking crew living and working among industrial decay at the edge of a Balkan wilderness, the film is more interesting as an exercise in stretching genre tentacles than a satisfying narrative or artistic one-off. Still, it features enough of the cockeyed familial ruminations and loose improvisational aura for which the filmmakers have become known that their devotees will be more than pleased.

“Absurd, mutinous, and transgressively comical, Hell Hole is old-school sci-fi horror, yet in typical family fashion, they subvert the genre with textures of biological and environmental horror in tandem with...

The talented Adams Family’s hit film “Hellbender” was ranked No. 1 on Rotten Tomatoes Top 10 of best-rated horror films of 2022. Their most recent film, “Where the Devil Roams,” was purchased by Tubi after premiering at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival on July 27th.
Alongside parents John and Toby Adams, sisters Zelda and Lulu are experiencing a meteoric rise in the horror genre. In addition to writing her first feature length screenplay, Lulu was recently spotted on set of the new Coleman Brothers movie, portraying the character “Eleanor.”
Like her inaugural screenplay (which recently wrapped production), not much has been publicly announced about the new Coleman Brothers movie.
So far, we know that it’s a vampire movie and that it’s written and directed by Vince and James Coleman. We also know that Lulu’s character “Eleanor” gets turned and becomes a bloodsucker. Not much else is known about the movie as of right now.

There is something about a carnival. Something mysterious. Maybe even a tad dangerous. In the midst of a humdrum existence, a carnival feels like one of the last places left where magic may still exist. It’s here one day, gone the next. A world unto itself that sets up in new places, inviting us into its arms for one or two nights at a time, before vanishing, taking its magic along with it. It is populated by people living their lives on the edge of society; just close enough for us to see and interact with when they choose, before closing the curtain and retreating to their own little world. Performers who thrill, challenge, and play with their audience before disappearing like ghosts, leaving us behind in the ordinary world.
That mysterious nature has been bottled on film a handful of times. Tod Browning’s Freaks, the HBO Carnivale series,...

The Adams Family have done it again! The filmmaking team, made up of father John Adams, mother Toby Poser and daughters Zelda and Lulu, have been writing, directing, producing and starring in their own independent productions for a little over a decade, and have crafted festival favorites including The Deeper You Dig and Hellbender. Last week, at the Fantasia Film Festival, they premiered their most ambitious project yet, Where the Devil Roams, a supernatural horror set in Depression-era America.
Hard times have fallen upon a small carnival. Attendance is at an all-time low, and there's not enough nickels to go around to feed the sideshow acts. Among them are the performing trio, Maggie (Toby Poser), Seven (John Adams) and Eve (Zelda Adams), who do a song and dance routine that hardly draws a crowd. Stealing their spectators is Mr. Tibbs, a magician who slices off his fingers one by one with rusty scissors,...

Where The Devil Roams Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
The Adams Family – John Adams, Toby Poser and their children Zelda Adams and Lulu Adama – have been making films together for some years now. Screening as part of the Fantasia International Film Festival and also part of the line-up for this month’s Frightfest, their latest work, Where The Devil Roams, is their best yet. It follows a family of carnival performers: the troubled, psychopathic Maggie (Toby), shell shocked former army medic Seven (John) and singing sensation Eve (Zelda), who is mute offstage, as they travel across the US during the Great Depression, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
We spoke briefly about the film a couple of years ago, when they were promoting their last film, Hellbender, and when we meet again I say that I recall being told then that this one was Zelda’s idea.
Zelda nods.

Plot: Traces a family of murderous sideshow performers as it travels around the world on the dying carnival circuit.
Review: I feel it needs to be stated right off the bat that Where the Devil Roams will not be for everybody. From a production standpoint, it feels very amateur at points. The blown-out sky and awkward sound design certainly point to this being more student film than major feature. But even still, there’s a beauty to the cinematography, as well as the awkward performances. You’re either going to be turned off by it or along for the ride. I can’t imagine there being much “in-between” when it comes to such a polarizing style of film.
John Adams, Toby Poser, and Zelda Adams all serve as the writers, directors, and stars of Where the Devil Roams, and that fact alone should be commended. Not very often do you see a Trifecta in film,...

Fox Corp.’s Tubi, its free, ad-supported streaming TV service, has pounced on two high-profile Fantasia titles, led by “Where the Devil Roams,” the Adams family’s follow-up to “Hellbender,” Rotten Tomatoes No. 1 movie on its Top 10 of best-rated horror films of 2022, just besting Eskil Vogt’s “The Innocents.”

The Adams Family are among the most exciting indie horror filmmakers working today. The prolific family of hands-on filmmakers – father John Adams, mother Tobey Poser, and daughter Zelda Adams – share writing, directing and acting credits on all of their films, including 2021’s Hellbender.
Where the Devil Roams is the family’s most ambitious film yet, replete with a large supporting cast and a Depression-era period setting. The sprawling nature of the story gives the film an epic scope, but it also chips away at the cohesive structure, as the film winds up feeling more like a series of vignettes that fail to build to a satisfying, cohesive whole.
Maggie (Poser) is an uneducated woman married to Seven (John Adams), a former war medic. She’s impulsive and prone to violence, while he faints at the sight of blood. The pair have a regular gig as carnival performers with their daughter...
