Remember the days when buddy cop shows were the bread and butter of American television?
From Starsky & Hutch to Miami Vice, the genre gave us mismatched partners who bickered, bantered, and ultimately brought down the bad guys.
It was escapism at its finest — a world of fast cars, sharp one-liners, and explosive finales.
Starsky & Hutch (ABC/Screenshot)
But over the years, the buddy cop genre has faded from the U.S. small screen.
Don’t worry, though; it’s alive and well — it just packed its bags and went global.
A Brief History of Buddy Cop Glory
The buddy cop formula hit its stride in the 1980s and 1990s, an era when the appeal of Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop carried over from the big screen to TV.
Shows like Starsky & Hutch and Cagney & Lacey offered variations on the theme, combining humor, action, and, occasionally, a dash of drama.

Fox's crime drama Prison Break ran for five original seasons in the mid to late 2000s and starred several actors with successful TV careers. Seeing the success of serialized shows like Lost and 24, the network had faith in the success of Prison Break. The series is set in prison and stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller as imprisoned brothers Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield. The former is accused of murder and sentenced to death, while the latter gets himself put in prison so he can break his brother out, believing he is innocent.
The thrills and originality established in Prison Break season 1 earned widespread acclaim. Though later seasons of Prison Break would struggle to return to a similar status, the series still had a strong fan base. The response from audiences prompted both a TV film based on the series' characters and a revival season in 2017. Many of Prison Break...

When 9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear signed up on Twitter (now known as X), he chose a telling handle to denote his legacy as a screenwriter and director: @Cancelledagain. “I was sort of infamous for all of my thundering failures over the years,” explains Minear. “Firefly lasted one season, Terriers one season, The Inside one season, Drive went for six episodes. Everything was canceled, so I just called myself ‘cancelled again,’ which actually worked out for me because these are all beloved little cult shows now.”
With the seventh season of 9-1-1, which he created with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, underway and a milestone 100th episode premiering April 4, Minear now has a big, long-running show on his hands, plus a successful spinoff in 9-1-1: Lone Star, which will debut its fifth season in the fall. So much so that he’s considering a name change if he returns to the social media platform.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Creator Leslye Headland Talks the Unique Perspective of Her Upcoming Series
Star Wars: The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland is currently putting the finishing touches on a four-year journey that started with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy buying her overall series pitch in the room. At the time, her hook was “Frozen meets Kill Bill,” and now the first trailer provides a few more of the puzzle pieces. Set a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Amandla Stenberg’s mysterious character appears to be hunting Jedi during a time of peace near the end of the High Republic era.
The trailer kicks off with Lee Jung-jae’s Jedi Master urging a group of Padawans to not trust their own deceitful eyes, and perhaps the same can be said of the trailer and the series’ overall narrative. The show will be taking a page out of Rashomon’s playbook, exploring different perspectives on the same events.

I’ve been doing this long enough to remember the days when film folks saw doing TV as a bit of a step down, or a one-time novelty — and even TV folks felt like they were in the minors, waiting for that call to join the movie big leagues. That hasn’t been the case for a while, and I like to needle my film colleagues with the now-established fact that TV is where it’s at. The rise of streaming just cemented that.
It’s still fun, though, to chat with creatives who have spent most of their career in film, and hear about their experiences in working on TV series. Inevitably, they must admit that working in TV was both gratifying — and perhaps the hardest thing they’ve ever done.
“Knives Out” filmmaker Rian Johnson, for example, wasn’t a stranger to TV when he started working on Peacock’s “Poker Face.

Netflix's The Night Agent is an exciting political thriller from the mind of Shawn Ryan. The 10-episode series centers on Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) and Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a low-level FBI agent and young tech CEO, who become embroiled in a far-reaching, and deadly, conspiracy. The Night Agent is based on a book by Matthew Quirk of the same name.
Another major player in the events of The Night Agent is the U.S. President's Chief of Staff Diane Farr, played by Hong Chau. Chau is in the midst of a moment of recognition, having recently earned an Oscar nomination for her work as a major character in The Whale and impressed audiences with a menacing turn in The Menu. As Diane Farr, Chau continues to demonstrate her ability to tackle a wide range of roles, seemingly jumping into the political thriller genre with agility and ease.

The Night Agent showrunner answers about the possibility of season 2. Currently streaming on Netflix, The Night Agent is led by Gabriel Basso in the role of FBI Agent Peter Sutherland. The series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, kicks into gear when Peter receives a phone call that plunges him into a conspiracy. Luciane Buchanan, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Sarah Desjardins, Eve Harlow, Phoenix Raei, Enrique Murciano, D. B. Woodside, and Oscar nominee Hong Chau also star.
In an interview with Deadline, The Night Agent creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan was asked about the possibility of season 2, especially considering that there's no follow-up book for the show to continue off on. Ryan begins his answer bluntly, explaining that the writing team won't begin to worry about a second installment until the conspiracy drama is officially picked up by Netflix.

Plot: A sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low-level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.

The Night Agent, based on the best-selling novel by Matthew Quirk, plays like an extended origin story that mines a tried and true plot without really uncovering any gems. Kindred will not move forward at FX.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Disney-backed basic-cable network has canceled the drama based on Octavia E. Butler’s 1979 novel about a young Black woman who is pulled back and forth in time. Showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Watchmen) is expected to shop the drama from FX Productions as he envisioned a multiple-season run for the series.
Reps for FX declined to comment.
Kindred debuted Dec. 13, launching all eight episodes of the drama that starred Mallori Johnson as an L.A. woman who is pulled back in time to the 19th century South. Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten and Gayle Rankin also starred in the drama.

Poker Face, Rian Johnson’s drama series starring Natasha Lyonne as a human bullsh*t detector, wasn’t conceived as a limited series and the Knives Out filmmaker said there are “endless possibilities” to continue in success.
Lyonne stars as Charlie, an effortlessly cool, cheap beer drinking woman with a preternatural ability to solve crimes. After a casino boss seeks her out to use her abilities for nefarious purposes, Charlie goes on the run and gets mixed up in more crimes.
Johnson says that it’s a “how to catch ‘em” rather than a whodunnit as the crime is front and center in each episode.
But while there’s one story that arcs through the ten-episode season, one involving Benjamin Bratt’s security expert, it’s ostensibly a procedural.

Warning! This article contains minor Spoilers for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery!Glass Onion’s cast subtly continues the two oldest traditions and Easter eggs of Rian Johnson's movies. The 2022 sequel to Knives Out, which brings back Daniel Craig’s suave Southern detective Benoit Blanc, follows a group of old friends who are invited to a Greek island by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) to solve a fictional murder mystery – until the game becomes real. In addition to maintaining the numerous clever twists and red herrings that made Rian Johnson’s 2019 movie Knives Out a hit, Glass Onion features more Johnson traditions that apply to each of the filmmaker’s past projects.
Like Knives Out, the success of Glass Onion is largely supported by its star-studded cast, which includes brief cameos from celebrities like Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim in their final posthumous release, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,...

I spent two years fighting the complications of desperately wanting to recommend AMC’s delightfully weird dramedy Lodge 49 and being generally unable to even describe the show. A slice of surfer noir by way of Thomas Pynchon, like Terriers without the gumshoe trappings, Lodge 49 probably never would have been a mainstream smash, but I don’t think it ever came close to maxing out on the audience that would have fallen for its laconic, philosophical noodling and its abundant, low-key charms.
AMC+’s new series Moonhaven isn’t really a lunar Lodge 49, but hailing from Lodge 49 showrunner Peter Ocko and boasting Lodge 49 creator Jim Gavin as writer and producer, Moonhaven has some of that elusive DNA. Even if one can sense Ocko and company trying to at least give AMC+ a promotable hook, Moonhaven is a show that...

Before launching “9-1-1” with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk as a Fox midseason drama in January 2018, Tim Minear was a prolific producer with many impressive TV credits under his belt. Minear, who has the longest-running overall deal at “9-1-1” studio 20th Television, is best known for his work on “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” “American Horror Story,” “Terriers,” “Feud,” “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and “Wonderfalls.” But of those shows, the ones he personally created are best known for being very short-lived. Case in point: ever the self-aware-dark-humorist, Minear’s now-deactivated Twitter handle used to be @CancelledAgain.
“For the longest time, it was always like, what’s the hit network show?” Minear, who is “9-1-1” and spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” co-showrunner, told Variety. “That’s what the studio wants me to do, they want me to come up with a hit network show, and all I wanted to do was weird little cable things.

Sony TV is developing an adaptation of the 2005 skateboarding film “Lords of Dogtown” for IMDb TV.
Catherine Hardwick, who directed the 2005 film, will executive produce with Shawn Ryan and Marney Hochman.

The TV series will be written by Kat Candler and is a one-hour ensemble-drama, centered around a hell-raising teenage girl growing up in the foster-care system. She falls in with a crowd of skaters who idolize the famed Zephyr Skateboard Team, who were portrayed in the film.
IMDb TV is Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service. The service in recent months has landed the rights to AMC’s “Mad Men” (which it is sharing with AMC in the U.S.) as well as Judge Judy Sheindlin’s upcoming courtroom series.

Machoian wrote the screenplay with Crawford in mind to play the lead role. Set in the midst of our current economic crisis, the story focuses on a husband and father, Joe (Crawford) who finds that it’s more difficult than he expected to kill his own food.

Hollywood producers are betting big on the popularity of Resident Evil, with an animated series, a feature film reboot and a live-action TV show in the works. Of course, the more casual viewer’s mind will immediately jump to the franchise spearheaded by Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich, which never found much in the way of critical acclaim but managed to draw in over $1.2 billion at the box office across six installments.
The movies were action-heavy blockbusters with horror and sci-fi elements as opposed to the more atmospheric chills found in the best games in the back catalogue, and the upcoming reboot will be returning to the basics. Director Johannes Roberts has some solid experience in the horror genre, and he’s already intimated that he’s looking to make his Resident Evil a more terrifying and visceral experience.

Midway through its first episode, Alex Garland’s Devs launched a mystery that was so intense, it made coder Sergei literally lose his lunch.
Welcomed into the Devs division’s super-secret, super-secure Cube, Sergei was invited by Amaya founder Forest (played by Nick Offerman) to simply claim a desk and read the computer code scrolling before him. As Sergei did that, his face slowly transitioned from mildly curious to surprised… to then downright alarmed. Sickened, in fact. He then sprinted to the employee washroom to vomit, so affected was he by what he saw.

Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland has signed a multi-year, overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios to create, develop and direct series for network, cable and streaming platforms.
“Every once in a very rare while, you watch some tv show or movie, and it’s so special that you think how lucky you’d be if you got to work with its creator,” said Bert Salke, President, Fox 21 Television Studios. And rarer still is when you meet them and you can’t believe that they are better than you could’ve even imagined. That’s our experience with Leslye. Her incredible work in both film and TV is surpassed only by how awesome she is in real life.”
Headland co-created with Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler dramedy Russian Doll which is heading into its second season on Netflix. The series was nominated for 13 Emmy awards for its first season, winning two.

One of the biggest surprises of the 2019-2020 television season is ABC’s “Stumptown.” The Cobie Smulders-led P.I. drama is somehow — and also quite easily — one of the best new shows of the season; the only series that’s really even challenged it for that position is HBO’s unbeatable “Watchmen.”
The reason this is such a surprise is that “Stumptown” is also a network television procedural, which automatically makes its quality up for debate even more than it would if it were a cable show. For good reason, network television is seen as the land of homogeny, where the same types of stories are told again and again, a point which also lends itself to the procedural genre.
But “Stumptown” is a genuine small screen miracle. It isn’t marred by either trying (and often failing) to be like “Lost” or telling the millionth cop or lawyer or doctor or firefighter story.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: If you could pick one show – old or current – that you could champion/discuss more, but haven’t for whatever reason, what would it be? Why?
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
Tuesday’s Emmy nominations make the answer much simpler than I would’ve hoped: “Better Things.” Pamela Adlon’s excellent FX comedy is made with such a potent combination of artistry and heart. Each piece is carefully crafted, from Adlon’s sweeping direction to the intimate vignette storytelling to the sparkling soundtrack to each individual performance and more. There are so many layers here, sliding in so smoothly one on top of the other, you don’t realize just how rich the personalities, story arcs, and overall experience is until you spend time with the series. While never a ratings juggernaut,...

The FX Plus subscription service is shutting down — another casualty of Disney’s acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox’s assets, and a move coming as FX’s content is set to get funneled into the Disney-controlled Hulu service.
FX Plus will no longer be available after Aug. 20, 2019, according to a notice on the service’s website. Initially launched two years ago with Comcast, FX Plus offered subscribers to the $5.99 monthly service ad-free access to more than 1,400 episodes of FX programming, including “Atlanta,” “American Horror Story,” “Damages,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “The Shield,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “Terriers.” FX Plus later added Cox Communications as an affiliate.
Current seasons of FX Networks’ original series will continue to air on the FX and Fxx linear channels and be available for “limited-time on-demand viewing” in the FXNow app and online at FXNetworks.com through pay-tv subscriber authentication, according to the cable programmer.

Liz Feldman and Leslye Headland both have dark comedies that stream on Netflix: Feldman’s “Dead to Me” focuses on the new friendship between grieving widow Jen (Christina Applegate), and Judy (Linda Cardellini), who has more of a connection to Jen’s dead husband than it seems at first glance, while Headland’s “Russian Doll” is an addiction metaphor that centers on a woman named Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) who keeps literally dying over and over, forced to find meaning and connection before everything around her disappears. But that is far from all they have in common. Both women were first-time single-camera comedy showrunners with these series. Headland came from theater and independent film, while Feldman spent years working in multi-camera broadcast comedy. And, as they realized when they sat down at Variety, they have similar sensibilities and approaches to their genre, as well as their storytelling.

Netflix series Russian Doll uses the familiar trope of a character stuck in a death loop, adding a ruthlessly comedic aspect.
Russian Doll, an upcoming Netflix dark comedy series, certainly reinforces a plot-paralleling irony in the fact that stories about characters repeatedly reliving the same day and experiencing repeated deaths are becoming a repetitive event, especially after the surprise box office success of Happy Death Day, which is yielding a sequel in Happy Death Day 2U.
However, it would be unwise to dismiss the 8-episode inaugural season of Russian Doll as another Groundhog Day-esque genre clone, since it’s the product interesting personnel and a comedically twisted take on said trope.

Sometimes you land on the perfect TV show title (think Friends, Cheers, Revenge). Other times, you land on Cougar Town. Or worse, Shasta McNasty.
We here at TVLine have championed many a show with titles that simply don’t do them justice — titles so bad that they befuddle, irritate or potentially alienate viewers altogether. There have been good shows hurt by names both odd (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Terriers) and misrepresentative (Trophy Wife). Other shows are hurt by woefully generic monikers (Complications, Rise).

There are many changes in Sunday’s Season 9 premiere of “The Walking Dead,” but here’s one of the biggest for star Norman Reedus: “I didn’t really say much, the last couple of seasons. I’m talking my ass off now.” He laughed. “[Former star] Andy [Lincoln] will call and he goes, ‘How’s it going?’ I’m like, ‘You’re such an asshole. I can’t believe you left me. I have all these lines now. I have to memorize stuff all the time.'”
Along with Lincoln’s exit, this season also brings new showrunner Angela Kang. And Reedus said that’s made all the difference to the long-running zombie apocalypse drama.
“We have a different flavor in all directions,” said Reedus, who has played the rough-riding Daryl since the series began. “The sets are different. The camera work is different. The writing is different. The actors are different,...
