Exclusive: This Is Us lead Chrissy Metz has joined the cast of Bank of Dave: The Sequel, director Chris Foggins’ follow-up to his 2023 British feel-good comedy Bank of Dave, based on a true story.

Among those confirmed to return for the sequel, from the same creative team, are Rory Kinnear and Jo Hartley. Stay tuned for further castings to be announced imminently.

Hitting North American theaters last year via Samuel Goldwyn Films, Bank of Dave is inspired by the true story of Dave Fishwick (Kinnear), a self-made millionaire from the British town of Burnley. Eimi Imanishi is thematically expanding her Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival winner, “Battalion to My Beat,” as a narrative feature film titled “Doha – The Rising Sun.”

The film, written and directed by Imanishi, will follow Mariam, a young woman who is forced to return home to Western Sahara when she is deported from Europe. Adrift in the very place that was once her home, she desperately searches for the means to assert agency over her own life.

Imanishi participated in Film Independent’s directors lab, followed by the Sundance Institute’s screenwriting and directing labs in 2018. At the heart of Pham Tien An’s sprawling feature debut, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, is a protagonist so unmoored from his surroundings that he looks forever on the cusp of floating away at the slightest breeze. Thien (Le Phong Vu) first appears sitting in an outdoor café in Saigon with a few friends, a local pickup game of soccer playing out to his right and the patrons behind him cheering on a televised professional match in between bites of food. Ignoring the hubbub around him, Thien asks his friends about matters of faith but looks uninterested in his own topic, zoning out as others talk about their religious beliefs.

Thien is so alienated from his environment that when a motorcycle crashes next to the café, he’s one of the few people in the vicinity who doesn’t react, remaining seated as others head over to survey the damage.

Kino Lorber has snatched up North American rights to Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, the mesmerizing first feature from Vietnamese director Pham Thien An, which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section in Cannes this year, where it won the Camera d’Or for best directorial debut.

The film fulfills the promise shown in Pham’s acclaimed shorts, including 2019 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight winner Stay Awake, Be Ready, which was the inspiration for Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell.

The film follows Thien (Le Phong Vu), a prodigal son with little direction in his life who, after his sister-in-law dies in a freak motorcycle accident, is tasked with delivering her body, and his 5-year-old nephew Dao, who miraculously survived the crash, back to their countryside hometown. Writer-director Jamie Sisley’s Stay Awake, a feature-length expansion of the filmmaker’s short of the same name from 2015, looks at its serious subject matter through a maudlin lens. The film’s title refers explicitly to Michelle (Chrissy Metz), whose opioid addiction routinely finds her nodding off in the backseat of the family car on the way to the hospital, as teenage sons Ethan (Wyatt Oleff) and Derek (Fin Argus) sing notable songs to try and keep her conscious. Across repetitive, overwritten scenes that are intent on verbalizing the film’s themes and ideas, Sisley struggles to find a tonal range that might reflect a more complex set of emotions and as such elevated his film above a glorified Afterschool Special.

Glossy drama film, “Inside the Yellow Cocoon,” has unveiled its first trailer ahead of its world premiere this month in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes.

Dubai-based sales agency Cercamon has picked up international rights to “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” by first-time feature director Pham Thien An. The film will have its global premiere next month in the Directors Fortnight section of the Cannes film festival.

Pham Thien An previously made short films “The Mute” in 2018 and the one-take “Stay Awake, Be Ready” in 2019. Both enjoyed a busy festival career, with “Stay Awake” earning the Illy Prize in Cannes followed by additional awards at the Palm Springs, Busan, Kyiv and Flickerfest events.

“Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” follows the emotional journey of Thien, who is entrusted with the responsibility of delivering his sister-in-law’s body to their hometown after a tragic motorcycle accident in Saigon. Canvas Media Studios and MarVista Entertainment have hammered out a six-film slate deal that will be focused on identifying diverse, first-time and up-and-coming writers and directors.

The agreement will involve fully financed completed titles with a pre-buy distribution commitment from MarVista Entertainment, which will also oversee global distribution for all films produced under the partnership.

Canvas, a​ venture capital-backed​ ​content​ ​company, is led by David Tochterman, an industry vet with stints at Overbrook Entertainment and the Carsey-Werner Company. MarVista Entertainment, a division of Fox Entertainment, averages 80 new movies per year.

Sffilm Festival, San Francisco’s premier celebration of film, has unveiled its 65th lineup for this year’s return to in-person festivities. The 2022 program features more than 130 from 56 countries, with 56 percent helmed by female or non-binary filmmakers and 52 percent directed by Bipoc filmmakers. Fox Entertainment’s MarVista Entertainment, a prolific producer and distributor of original movies for traditional and streaming networks worldwide, is continuing its expansion into Latin America, signing a major development and production deal with TelevisaUnivision.

Under the pact, MarVista, founded by Fernando Szew and Michael Jacobs, will produce ten original Spanish-language films featuring creative and on-screen talent from Latin America across family, comedy, romance, and holiday genres that will stream exclusively on ViX+, TelevisaUnivision’s streaming platform, which is scheduled to launch in the second half of the year. TelevisaUnivision will hold worldwide streaming distribution rights to all ten films under the deal, and MarVista will oversee global distribution outside of streaming and second windows for all platforms.

This marks the first major production commitment to MarVista following the indie studio’s December acquisition by Fox Entertainment.

They’ve gone through this too many times not to know the reason for any impromptu visit: Mom (Chrissy Metz’s Michelle) is missing again.
