Miss United Kingdom, Yvonne Ormes, had tied with Miss United States, but she made it to the 'Top 7' after the quality vote from the Chairman of the judges, Mr. Peter Dimmock of the BBC. In the final round, she placed seventh, behind Miss Brazil, Sônia Yara Guerra.
Georgina Rizk, Miss Lebanon, who did not even place among the 'Top 15', would later win the crown at the Miss Universe 1971 (1971) in Miami Beach.
This was first time that Africa South (as a separate contestant from South Africa), Grenada, and Mauritius competed.
At the time, Jennifer Hosten (Miss Grenada) was a flight attendant for BWIA West Indies Airways (known locally as "Bee-Wee) which was the national airline based in Trinidad and Tobago. The airline folded in December 2006.
This event was marked by controversy. In the days before, the competition's organizers allowed two entries from South Africa, one black, one white. During the show itself, feminist protesters threw eggs and flour on the stage, in addition to pestilent smoke gadgets and a rain of pamphlets against the contest. Afterwards, as a black woman had won the Pageant for the first time, there were many accusations that the contest had been rigged to favor Grenada over Sweden.
