The Turnpike Killer is the latest bloody valentine to VHS-distributed horror films from the ‘80s.
The collector’s edition is a DVD/VHS combo packaged inside a cleverly designed “big box” complete with retro artwork. The VHS tape and box are fun promotional materials and will certainly speak to a segment of the horror audience mesmerized by such things. My horror nostalgia is tied directly to the the ‘70s, when opening up a paper on Friday morning was the equivalent of perusing the horror section of the local mom-and-pop video store. Though I can understand the enthusiasm of the VHS fans, I don’t share the affection. Video was an ugly medium that, unlike vinyl records, has not improved with age.
This new fad of celebrating poor-quality dupes of genre films,...

Brian Weaver and Evan Makrogiannis, creators of The Super, are back in the Queens basement where they shot portions of that movie, and they’ve got one of its stars, Ruby Larocca, with them. Having staged her murder here once, they’ve enlisted her to play victim again for pickup shots to add to their first feature, The Turnpike Killer, for a special-edition release this summer.

“Don’t bother locking your doors. He has the keys.” This is the tagline to the newest feature from Brian Weaver and Evan Makrogiannis of New York’s Hallows Eve Films, the duo that previously gave us The Turnpike Killer. This time, with the help of producer Alex Lugones of Noose Hill Entertainment, they bring us a story about another psychopath. This one is the superintendent of a New York City apartment building.
