Why Watch? What if you found out your father was a superhero? What if he only played one in the movies? This short film has a giant heart beating beneath its emblem-covered chest, and it contains a brilliant use of Kid Logic – that pesky logic that children use which makes absolute sense but is completely untrue. Here, a young boy discovers a picture of his actor father on the cover of a magazine touting the return of a spandex-wearing hero, and he jumps to the most natural conclusion: that his father has super powers. What does it cost? Just 12 minutes of your time. Check out the trailer for The Legacy for yourself: The Legacy (2010) Trust us. You have time for more short films.

Movies like the live-action sci-fi adventure films that I grew up on are hard to find today unless you look at animation. “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Explorers,” “The Last Starfighter” — if these movies were made today, they would probably be done by Pixar. And, while animation has grown exponentially from the days of my youth, there is still a unique charm that films have when the characters are real. For me, “The Legacy” was a tribute to these movies — the movies that made me want to become a filmmaker.
In writing this film, I tried to channel my 10-year-old self as much as possible. I really wanted this film to be from a child’s perspective and show the amazing capacity that children have for believing in extraordinary things. So the question was, what was I thinking about when I was 10 years old? Three things came to mind: family, Superman and movies.

Every once in a while, we’ll get an opportunity to check out a new indie film from out of nowhere and get blown away by it. Sadly, this happens less often than we would like, but in this case, it was completely true.
We recently got to check out the short film The Legacy, written and directed by Mike Doto, about a boy who discovers that his father is the world’s greatest superhero. The film is, by all definitions of the word, fantastic. It captures some of the elements that made the original Superman films so great, without treading into campy territory.
With that in mind, we got a chance to sit down with the writer/director of the film, Mike Doto, about what it took to make the project, and where he goes from here.
The Flickcast: With a concept like The Legacy, what drove you to this idea?...
